How to Clean Bird Feeders

If you are going to feed birds, it is very important to clean your feeders and bird baths on a regular basis. Cleaning with a soapy water mix is important but using a disinfecting mix of a 10% bleach and water solution. Either spraying the feeders down or dipping them into the solution them letting them air dry will kill any bacteria they may be on the feeder.
Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. He has a degree in Fish and Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University and has worked for the Department of the Army, the Wildlife Departments of North Carolina and Missouri. He ran nature centers for many years in Missouri and Pennsylvania before buying the Backyard Bird Center in the Northland area of Kansas City. Mark has led hundreds of bird hikes both locally and abroad. He has taught classes about birds and other wildlife to groups of all ages and brings that knowledge to the customers of his retail business every day. Yes I let my feeders air dry for a few hour's and I don't think I'm doing any damage to them. But it is supper easy and works really well. Thanks Mark as always I really appreciate your input!!!

Which brand brush do you recommend for the tube feeders? I was looking on-line, but I only see those small brushes for Hummer feeders and one really big brush for concrete birdbaths.

Doesn't soapy dishwater handle the germs and bacteria?

Very few of them actually. Not even dishwashers on their highest temperature settings kill bacteria. The 10% bleach solution is the safest and surest way.

Would clorox wipes be OK to use to clean my feeders?

I don’t know the strength of bleach in the wipes but the maximum recommended is 10:1. As long as you rinse them well and let them air dry it they could be safe.

I just purchased the Aspects 402 Thistle feeder. It is not too obvious how to clean it before using it. Obviously, the bottom twists off which is nice. But what about the top?? I am not sure if I should try to remove the top or not. I am afraid if I bend the hanging wire, it may ruin the feeder. Also, it came with the label completely glued to the feeder. In other words, there was not just a tad of glue on one or two sides to hold on the label. The entire label is glued to the feeder. I gently used my nail to start a tear in several spots until I could totally tear off the label. Once it was off, guess what? I could clearly see scuff marks all up and down the clear plastic tube. I am talking about marks that in my care would not appear for years. I is a brand new feeder. The plastic should be clear as glass for $50 plus tax. This feeder should come in a box like the Squirrel Buster feeders do. You cannot have these feeders laying around and then shipped in a plastic or a paper bag and NOT expect the to get scuffed up.

@@user-lz6dm5lk9y That doesn’t sound good at all. I’ve never seen one with that much adhesive on the label. They ship to us 6 to a box but are packed well. As for the top, it slides up and hangs to one side. With the quick release base removed, you can easily run a brush all the way through the feeder. Did you buy this from us?

@@MarksBackyardBirds Oh, no, Mark. I ordered it from Amazon. They shipped it to me squished inside of a paper envelope. I am sure some of the scuffs and scratches probably happened in transit, but since it did not come in a manufacturer's box, for example like Brome feeders, I imagine they must have them on shelves or hanging somehow in the warehouse, and they probably get a lot of scuffs and scratches in the warehouse. Amazon is sending me a replacement, but I am not holding my breath. If it arrives in good shape, I will be very happy, but if it arrives in the same condition as the first one, then I have two to send back to them. I am amazed at how so many things on Amazon are shipped out with no protection. What are thinking at the warehouse?? I guess the desire to ship as cheaply as possible overcomes common sense.

@@user-lz6dm5lk9y Amazon also has cheap imitations of Aspects from China they sell. They even have Aspects name on them. It has really hurt Aspects business. The plastic is much thinner, etc. Aspects appealed to Amazon but they refused to do anything. Hope it wasn’t one of those.

@@MarksBackyardBirds Wow, I did not know this! Well, they sent me a replacement, but they shipped it in an envelope, too, so I refused delivery. I told them to ship in a box. The warehouse people never pay attention to instructions. Anyway, sent back the first one. Then I ordered another one from a marketplace seller that is legitimate. They did ship in a box, but it also arrived scuffed up but not nearly as bad as the first one. I think they must be poorly stored in warehouses to get scuffed up like that. Anyway, I assembled it and hung it. The one problem I had in assembling it was the two short bottom perches that screw into the base. They will not screw in flush against the sides. I screwed them in over and over again, and they just will not screw in flush, so I finally gave up. Hung the feeder outside an hour or two ago. Hoping it draws the Finches! 🙂
