Car maintenance you should do on ANY car or truck. How to clean your battery terminals or connectors easily and cheaply with baking soda and water. Yes baking soda will help safely clean the acid and then you can clean with a scotch pad or battery post brush or cleaner. at the end you add some oil or a protective spray to prevent the build up. I had to do this because I was not able to start my car once. This can wear out your battery because it can stop it from charging correctly.
You can purchase all the necessary items with the below affiliate links on Amazon.

Thank you, my car has been stranded for 2 days, no response to anything, totally dead. Cleaned around the battery cables but still nothing so suspected it was something else, mechanics checked it out and said the earth cable to the battery had corroded and needed replacing. I could only find the correct one at a dealership who quoted me 225 for a new one...so i found this video and just went to town on the cable and area around it. Car started up and is now running perfectly.

Fun fact: If the positive terminal is corroded, it means that its overcharging, likely due to a bad voltage regulator in the alternator. Negative means undercharging, possibly due to not driving it often enough, or long enough distances for the alternator to fully charge the battery.

What should you do to solve the issues on both?
@StatusFX3

@@father5946 I would recommend cleaning the battery terminals (or having it done); then using an anti corrosion gel on the terminals to protect them, and finally, buying yourself a "trickle charger" (they aren't expensive) to use every so often to maintain the charge. Other than that, it may be time for a new battery and/or alternator. Best of luck to you~♤

Yeah, I know. I was trying to make the point of the water spray. It should be no problem. As for me, I'll be using this method to do mine soon, as I noticed some corrosion there. Some of the chemicals are costly, although they'd last a long time probably, I prefer THIS approach. . If you don't have that ncp 2 stuff at the end to spray, you can also use vaseline and put it on the terminals. That's all we used before. Either way it's necessary to protect with something.

I had less corrosion than that and only one occurence, but on both terminals and the battery wouldn't recharge. It had high voltage, but no current. I don't know how old the battery in the video is (and it's definitely much older now), but i would be surprised if you could even get much more useful life out of that battery, especially considering the corrosion happened multiple times in a two month period...

If the water level isn't up the battery won't charge correctly. Also read the car manual. Some vehicles will lose the radio and you will need to recode it. You will need the code numbers. Good job, but It appears that YOU HAVE MISSED AN IMPORTANT STEP: The entire TOP of the battery must be thoroughly cleaned! WHY?...because DIRT and SALT on the TOP of the battery will CONDUCT ELECTRICITY! A tiny current will pass from one battery terminal to the other through DIRT and SALT until the battery is completely discharged. Then your vehicle will not start. When you keep the TOP of your battery sparkling clean, no current will escape from the terminals.
@OlJackBurton
@OlJackBurton 3 года назад
What is the process you use, including any agents or chemicals, to properly clean the entire top of the battery? It seemed he got most of the top of the battery cleaned. The amount of water he used actually made me nervous, but it looked like he wiped and dried down the top of battery pretty well. I'm wondering what exact additional steps he missed. It might seem like a dumb question, but i'm genuinely curious...

Your mistake was spraying the posts with the red stuff before you put the cables back on. Youre not supposed to spray the posts. You lose conductivity that way by creating a barrier. . Use dielectric grease on the posts, put the cables back on and then spray the red stuff over everything. Secondly, if you have that much corrosion after only two months, the battery is leaking and needs to be replaced.

Wrong. Dielectric grease can be used in between electrical connections, but only those utilizing low-current. Battery terminals are high current. No dialectric grease on posts....in fact, after cleaning the posts very thoroughly NOTHING should be applied. After putting the terminal hoops back on the posts, you then put some vaseline etc. That's it. You want clean bare posts and clean inner hoop terminals so nothing impedes the electrical connection.

@@philosopher0076 You may be right but the loss is almost non-existant. Been using nothing but dielectrc grease for decades and have always had long lasting corrosion free batteries. It also makes the terminal hoops come off the posts very easily which is why I do lightly coat the posts as well.

i dont fuck with that spray... all it does is attract dust and makes it really hard to clean up corrosion later when it drys up with all the junk it collects and bonds to the surface its on... but then again i pull off my cables periodically hit em with a drill brush to polish em up like new. makes a difference when you running a amplifer and sub system with no capacitor installed... sucker needs all the surface area the cable can muster to work under load lol

Don't mean to be rude, but you kind of lost my trust at the 33 second point, when you said that you cleaned it two months ago, and now it's like this. With all due respect, spend the 10 dollars, and get yourself some terminal protecting donuts, and corrosion inhibiting paste, and you'll go 3 to 5 years between cleanings, rather than two months.

No only did this not work at all, it's now shorted my entire car so my central locking doesn't work and I literally can't lock my vehicle. Cheers.
