How to Clean Comic Books (Before Getting Them Graded)

In this video, I demonstrate a few techniques for cleaning comic books that I have practiced over several months. Please note that I am not a professional comic book cleaner and that the items shown in this video can be purchased online and at various craft and DIY shops. You need a camera lens blower like the rocket air blaster. That would let you blow away the debris without using your mouth.

I use microfiber cloths all the time to get rid of fingerprint smudges from trade paperbacks and the types of dust jackets that feel sticky

I really, really wouldn't use a magic eraser. I use Pentel Eraser pens for white areas. They do wonders on silver and bronze age back covers.

Thanks for the video Regie 👊🏽 a lot of good info. I was wondering about cleaning the interior pages? I have a few comics that have a bit of a fine dust or dirt that's settled. Would the microfiber cloth be good for that?

If not the microfiber, the pad could work. I would not go to the gum or magic eraser. You may also want to try on a $1 book before something you care about.

HI Reg-I am learning to clean and press my own books and bought a bunch of dollar books for practice. My general question is on average how long does it take to clean a book? I know it will vary depending on each book, however I'm not sure if i am going to slow or to fast. This video helped a bunch as well. Thanks

It would be impossible for me to answer that question. 🤣😂 It depends upon the book, your skill, how you are cleaning the book, etc. Way too many variables. You may want to look for my four part series on cleaning here on RU-vid.

In truth, I have been wanting to learn how to clean comics for a long time, but had no idea about what tools to get - as I live in Paris I will try and see if I can find the same thing in the local craft shops. Can I assume that those Gums are suitable for removing pencil marks? Thanks again Regie

Gave you a thumbs up as always but im trying to clean a mjv 129 & there isn't too many on cgc; 6, 8 &9.0 or 9.2. Im hoping to have the highest out there through a cleaning and press; but not sure where to go. This is to dangerous on a book like that. My yellow has some black smudges but if done right i think i can move a whole #grade. Thanks for the suggestion but there are people who do this for a living just have to find a good one who handles rare books👍

Any advice about what to do about the back of books that are black kind of rubbing particularly marvel books?

If you’re ask asking about the scuff marks where color has been removed there is nothing that can be done.

Does the eraser bag remove the "glossyness" on a modern cover? I've tried a white eraser on a white cover, while it removed the marks, it also made a "dull" spot where you can see the glossy shine is gone. Thanks for the awesome video.

As mentioned in the video each one of these cleaning steps is abrasive and has the potential to damage a book. You start with the least risky option and increase...taking care with each step. In my expensive and as demonstrated in the video the eraser bag works well while not removing gloss. In many cases a modern book doesn’t even require this step. If you decide to try this, you should start with $1 books

How do you that you’re removing dirt versus ink?

Great question. If you wash your face you remove some dirt, oils and skins cells. The same principle probably applies here. As mentioned in the video you start with the least abrasive thing and work your way up. A microfiber cloth is good for babies so it should be good enough for a comic and if the situation requires more you move up. I would add that if you are indeed removing ink the white paper below will show. You will also “cut” through the glossy layer on the comic. Both of these things are visible. Just like when you rub your skin raw with some fancy scrub. I have done what I am demonstrating in this video with hundreds of books and have consistently received good grades. Including a healthy stretch of 9.8s.

The back and forth erasing as opposed to the one direction takes gloss right off. I guess it creates a lot of friction

So, if I rubbed really hard in one direction would it not take the gloss off? 🤷🏾‍♂️ Of course it’s would. As you have surmised it’s not about the motion so much as the pressure and friction created by said motion. Going in one direction also allows those less nimble and attentive to pay closer attention to what they are doing thus preventing accidental damage.

I have had my collection sitting in a box (boards and bags) for about 30 years and I am finally organizing it and inputting everything into an excel sheet. Next, I would like to try to grade and clean them myself self before sending some comics out to CGC. Do you know of any kind of grading cheklist for accessing my comics?

Would the gum eraser work on marker? I have no clue what kind of marker was used bu I'm pretty sure its wasn't permanent at least.

It’s tough to say given that we don’t know what type of market was used or how long the marker has been applied to the comic. At a certain point attempts to remove things like marker requires advanced techniques that are beyond my skillset and/or risk damage to the comic itself.

Being in the bag isn't the question. The bigger question is was the bag closed/taped down? And, where were the box stored. Books are not always bagged and boarded, and bagged/boarded books are not always tapped closed.
