Hockey is a high-intensive sport, and you will learn really quickly that you need to clean your hockey gear on a regular basis. One of the best ways to do this is in your bathtub. So follow me through the step-by-step process of how to clean hockey gear in the bathtub (everyone on the bench with you will thank you).

nice video. I do the same. Here's a step that I do that costs nothing. We all have old hockey sticks. Well, I took 5 of my old hockey sticks and cut them down to a length that spans from side to side of my bathtub. Once im done washing my gear in the tub, i put the sticks across my tub and use them as a drip/dry rack.

Drain and spin cycle on washer will spin out the extra water. Obviously not all washers and not all at once but it helps with everything…including my shoes, hats, gear…anything as long as its balanced in the drum.

Great tip, thank you! I usually wash in the washer now instead of the bath tub.

If I haven't cleaned my gear in a while I spray it down with table vinegar, let it sit for 5-10 mins then rinse it in the tub or washing machine with plain water. I use a dehumidifier to dry it.

Great tips! I have not tried vinegar yet but I hear a lot of people do that.

Don't quote me on this - but it sounds like they are fine to wash in the washing machine. Maybe the first time you should hand wash, but they seem to be pretty resilient.

Yes, please, please clean your gear every once in a while. If you can smell YOURSELF it's time for a clean, lol. I use oxi-clean instead of laundry soap-- laundry soap leaves a film on your gear and depending on the material it will sometimes dry and turn white. Having white crusty spots on your shorts can sometimes be a little embarrassing, heh. I throw my helmet in for a few minutes, never had any problems, and again if you're only using oxi-clean it won't bother your eyes like soap will when you start sweating in it again. Skates, never. Give them a shot of disinfectant inside and they'll be good. 2nd most important is drying. Try and put all gear in a position where the water can flow out (gloves upside down, that kind of thing), and DO NOT put your gear somewhere where it gets hot, like a garage. Heat destroys hockey equipment very, very fast-- it messes up the gels inside, destroys the leather, etc... For the love of the hockey gods, please Do NOT use heat!! I usually leave my stuff in the dry tub overnight and set a small fan on the edge with the shower curtain closed. This will help dry everything out and the moving air helps prevent mold. I usually give a little spritz of disinfectant spray over the shower curtain just to get that circulating in there, too. I personally don't recommend laundry soap but great tips! Everyone is different so do what works best for you :)
