Bhaw1 Thanks! Great to hear that you’ve been able to start playing; it’s never too late. I’ve started playing goalie now at age 36 after retiring as a player last season😃
@@MarcelsHockeySchool trying hard to get myself back into shape and this activity has helped...I have lost about 75 lbs this year. 25 to go. Nothing worse than a fat goaltender!!!
Hi how are you doing hoping doing well I wanted to ask you what do I need to buy if I want to start playing as a hockey or how can I start playing as a goalie from 0
Thank you sir, I love ice skating and ice hockey but where I am from we only have sand😀😀, so I moved to where I could ice skate, now I am starting as a beginner quite late in life. I had some nasty falls... A question though, does the pants protects the hips as well or just the pelvis area. And what hip protector do you recommend? Thank you.
50 here. Always wanted to play, so here it goes! I'm still at the "baby giraffe learning to walk" stage of the program, so actual hockey might be a little while yet, but it's an adventure!
@@guidosarducci166I’m 38, never played before but really want to. I’m terrified of the equipment price though. Still learning the rules but damn I want to play.
It’s totally normal to be nervous, so you’re not alone there. Find a routine that you do before practices/games. That will help. And once you hit the ice, the nervousness goes away!
Hey Marcel, just wanted to thank you so much for this video. I'm 33 and just did my first stick and puck. I could never have gotten myself dressed and known what to buy without this video!
thank you for this!! i've wanted to play hockey for forever and finally built up the courage to join my school's team! thank you so much for this video
I have never been interested in hockey, however I have started a journey with Aggressive Inline Skating. Come to find out some of my favorite bladers started out with hockey and ventured into Inline skating and it shows with their control of the skates. Thanks for all of your work. 👍✌️✌️
Great video. Playing hockey at 13 and have been playing but didn’t know about that zipper at the top of the hockey pants, and never tucked my tounge under my knee pads. Definitely found this interesting! Thanks!!
Glad you liked it! Yeah the zipper thing is a new thing- I didn't realize there was one on my pants for a couple of days :D For me, tucking the tongue is just the most comfortable way!
Marcel- thank you for the great video! I moved up north from Texas where I had never even seen a game of hockey before and it is now my favorite sport! I am working towards going to my first stick and puck soon... is there gear specific for women I should look for? Or is all of it unisex with the size just depending on your body type? This is the only thing stopping me from buying full gear
Hi Alexis, Glad that you’ve discovered hockey! Companies have started making equipment specifically designed for women, which is very cool. You don’t really need it as a beginner though. An elbow pad it still an elbow pad. The only thing you really need different is a jillstrap instead of a jockstrap.
Would it be normal for hockey pants to recess a decent amount when sitting down? The pants themselves go down to just barely overlap the top of the shin guard. However, when I'm sitting there is a large gap, like halfway up my thigh. Is that normal? I can't quit tell how yours go when your sitting. Thanks for the amazing video. Best I've seen so far!
Thank you! It’s pretty normal for them to slide up a couple of inches when sitting. I wouldn’t say half the way up the thigh, but yeah, they should slide up a bit.
OK well this video spurred me to skate out again after being a goalie for the last 20 years plus....I took some Xmas money and bought a whole set of new gear less gloves on line...wicked clearance sale...got it all new for C$300 skates included. Don't need the latest and greatest at my skill level. I have just lost 75 lbs and am looking for a cardio workout having just got a clean bill of health for my ticker,. tested up the ying yang. Nothing worse than a fat goalie, I was 177 lbs last Friday! So off I go tonight to a low level pickup game I normally play nets for. Hope to skate out two nights a week and between the pipes four, skate might be stretching it a bit as I have not worn player skates since about 2004. At least it will not hurt when I fall! Second childhood or mid life crisis?? Losing that lard I was on the ice in nets six nights a week. I am 60 BTW.
@@MarcelsHockeySchool huge. On the ice last night as a skater and had a ball. Back in nets tonight, out tomorrow. Really appreciate getting the heart going....amazed how lightweight new equipment is compared to what I wore thirty years ago. Especially the skates.
@@MarcelsHockeySchool first time out a little wobbly on players skates....last night no problem doing crossovers or backwards. I need to find some power skating sessions LOL.
MITCH MACLEOD I feel weird for a few minutes whenever I switch from player to goalie skates or back. But yeah, the gear is soooo much better and lighter than it used to be!
Continue to skate out twice a week and have surprised myself scoring three times... pretty low level play LOL. Only downer is I get crap when I don't have the goalie gear and we are short a tender for pickup! Aim is met, my cardio is improving big time and I have lost another 12 lbs now sitting at 165 with 15 more to go to hit my goal of 150. I played in nets for two hours last night ...am I good, no . But I went the distance. I credit hockey (and the gym) big time for helping me do this.
Hey man i just wanted to thank you because i recently joined my school hockey team and wanted to start playing ice hockey but then i realised i didnt even know what i would wear 🤣 but thanks to this video i have the idea of what i need and i can start saving for the kit
so where should my sits does that flap in the go over your belly button cause im a chunky guy and when i put my pants on that flap in the front folds over and sticksout does that mean pants are to small? i wear xl pants but ive tried on xxl pants and i feel like im some what swimming in the pants thats why i got the xl pants. so im not sure what i should.
The crotch part is usually pretty stretchy though. Try them with a cup before going to XL. I do like my pants a bit looser, but you have to make sure they don't hang over your knees because that will really hinder your skating
Here’s a full crossover tutorial of mine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fMXADjR3lk4.html The video is in German because I live and coach in Germany but I subtitle them all.
How high up the sides/back should the kidney padding be? Obviously high enough to cover the kidneys, but..... is there a more tactile way to judge? Should it be below the ribs? I'm worried my smalls are too short 'on top', but am swimming in a medium.....
I’m autistic and deal with some sensory issues with clothes. How comfortable is the equipment? I get anxious and uncomfortable with itchy or rough fabric, or stuff that’s too constricting. I’m wondering if it’s even possible for me to play :/
@MarcelsHockeySchool thank you! Earlier today I actually signed up for a course to learn to skate 😊 I'm looking forward to trying out hockey once I get comfortable skating
started playing at age 48..gotta admit, my first rat game I went to the locker room early and had to ask a guy how they hell do i put any of this stuff on..thanks for this video.
Vadim Manannikov I am 1,83m and 91kg. The shoulder pads are L and fit perfectly. The pants are also L, they fit but they have a zipper that you can open to make them 2,5cm longer. I opened this zipper otherwise they would be too short. I think XL pant would fit well for me too.
Marcel's Hockey School I am in doubt what size of shoulder pads to choose, 1.79m and 89kg. What size would be best for me M or L in your opinion? Thanks
Awesome video! I haven't played hockey since I was 19 (I'm 29 this year), I'm starting to play Recreational Hockey this year, and my shoulder pads and gloves don't quite fit me, but its close enough that I should be able to play Rec with no issue (until I buy some new gear). I decided to stick with my fishbowl visor, as I would like to keep most of my teeth (I will also have a cage as backup), this is because I took 2 slapshots to the face when I was a teenager, only reason I still have my teeth was cause I was wearing that Fishbowl.
My son's shoulder pads are a snug fit coming off. They go on easily, but it takes a little more work to get them off. Is this normal? His pads are Warrior and they fit in every other way, but I was looking at these very pads (in a junior small, he's 7yrs old & 4'3") bc they look to be slightly bigger in pics. Are the neck openings different sizes/shape brand to brand? The closest quality hockey store is 1.5hrs one way, not really up for a day long excursion for a pair of pads if I can avoid it.
they probably are a bit harder to take of because of sweating which makes gear a bit "stickier" when sliding it off, and also because the body expands ever so slightly when it's training/warmed up. All brands will fit a bit differently. As lot as they sit snugly on the shoulders and he's comfortable with them while playing, I wouldn't worry too much.
Thanks! I'm a figure skater who's just getting interested in maybe playing hockey. 1) What is the purpose of the hockey socks? It seems like they just cover over the top of the padding, so it's not like they protect your skin from chaffing, or keep the padding from getting funky. Do they have any actual function? 2) I've read that one is supposed to have a neck guard, but you're not wearing one. Are they common/uncommon? Thanks!
Hockey socks help keep the shin pads in place and it also looks better than just having the shinpads on. Neck guards are mandatory up until the the U20 but no longer for adults
I played Hockey ( known as field hockey or ball hockey in north america ) in school . It's an extremely dangerous sport.Hockey ball is lot harder then golf ball and lightening speed . and you can't play with helmet and any sorts of protective gear on except shin pad . I have to say Ice hockey is not only an exciting game but also a lot safer sport .
I don’t know if u will reply but with my knee pads and skates no matter if u tape or put my knee pads on really tight the knee pad always fall down and make the tongued my skate bend is there anyway I can fix that because I’m constantly pulling my knee pads up. Thanks!!!
Hmmm…I don’t really know because with tape the knee pads should stay in place. Maybe try different sets of knee pads on and see which fit your legs the best.
My son's (squirt) breezes keep getting stuck in the top of his shin pads. It drives us nuts. We've tried taping the top but after 8 years of hockey, I'm at a freaking loss on how to fix this. Soooooooo.... how do I fix this issue?
@@krisvilas767 Hmmm ok I know what you mean; that's really seldom though. If the pants and knee pads are the right length the only think I could suggest is trying different pant/knee pad options on together at the store. Because what you're describing happens maybe a few times per season but shouldn't on a regular basis...
@@MarcelsHockeySchool thanks for your response. He suspects it's bruising but I think it's muscle spasm because they were playing all day with just an hour and a half rest in addition he had to be doubling up because they were out four players. In the end they won 3rd place. Thanks again
@@MarcelsHockeySchool danke für die Antwort. Habe heute mein erstes Eishockey Training. Deine Videos haben mir mit gemacht damit anzufangen. Danke dafür
Hey I have a question seeing that you respond years later still I'm 14 and I would really like to make ice hockey my career i started 2months ago i know how to skate now I'm just going to ice hockey training I've searched up if 14 is too late and i get different answers yes and no obviously i know making it to the nhl would be very very hard but maybe like a lower league do you still think its possible if I put all my time and effort into it wich I am doing sorry if u dont understand I'm not very good with English
@@MarcelsHockeySchool okay thank you 1 more question say I'm 19 playing in a good amateur league are there still scouts there? And let's say I was playing very well would they still reach out to me if I'm playing in amateur leagues?
@@MarcelsHockeySchool lol I'm just teasing, but I was referring to you closing the belt on your pants before tying your skates. I usually leave it loose until after I have my skates on. Less restriction when leaning over to tie the skates. Good vid
@@ianmiller7523 Haha I actually did that? :D I didn’t even notice! Must have done it just for the vid because I usually have my belt loose until I stand up!
Hey thanks! I’m not sure exactly for stores because I don’t know where you live? But definitely try the stuff on in the store- much better than buying online.
I’ve played hockey for 7 years and quit at the age of 12 now I want to start playing again but idk because I’m going into last year of high school and then college
