Just want to thank you for taking the tine to post this video. I started this process yesterday on my 26' boat, will finish today and your technique works great. Everything looks better than new. This should make cleanup after an outing alot easier. No more blackstreaks or stains anywhere.
thanks very much for the information. I purchased a Shuttlecraft boat and after years of sun and storage outside I did what you presented with spectacular results. You saved me a lot of blood, sweat and tears and best of all time. Merry Christmas and all the best for you and your family.
Excellent How-To video! I use the Non-Skid Deck Cleaner as well and like you say, "A little goes a long way" and that's why I pour some in a spray bottle or pump. I get WAYYY more use from one bottle.
Great video!! I saw this last year or so and I’ve been buying that deck cleaner by the gallon size! Every time I use it I think… wait 3 mins! Lol but this process is great! Abd works like a charm. Thank you sharing it!
I work for CNB here in France as a Finisher. It's a Luxury boat construction firm and I'm working on the seventy7 and seventy8 models (largest and longest). I just wanted to let you know that if you buff / polish non-skid areas on your boat, they lose their "grit" (ability to stop you from skidding on it). I'd suggest you ask people getting on your boat to either have special shoes or go bare-feet when on the boat, and then cleanup is as simple as using a pressure washer with just warm water or acetone (or another product you think works). Also, waxing gelcoat makes it slippery. Which is why we wax molds before gelcoating them.
P5ykoOHD I agree for other kinds of non skid. This diamond pattern is not slippery after doing this. It’s the pattern itself that makes it non skid. I’ll do a video soon to show that’s it’s not slippery after waxing. I can’t speak for any other type of non skid though. I’m sure other types would be insanely slippery.
Thanks for the tips! I know this video is 3 years old but the RU-vid algorithm brought me to it. I'm a new detailer, mostly automotive. But I do have a nautical background and know boat so I did my first boat detail the other day. Although I got the boat super clean I would have loved to compound and wax the topside. Client didn't want that. (Maybe next time he takes it out he'll realize it's worth the time and money.) I'll employ these tips for the next client!
This is awesome. I actually watched the whole thing which I rarely do. I'm going to try this on my boat. Just bought a new one and our first trip out made it all dirty and I can't get it off. I was pretty upset and disappointed but now I got hope lol. This is what we need to do and I'm going to get this done. YAY! Thank so much for this info.
When your finished polishing try McKees 37 / Nautical one deck sealer works great, easy wash off! Been using it for 2years ! I fish the Long Island sound….😎
I love the Shurhold Pro Polish! It's the only wax I use. Great video. I laughed out loud at the plumber generator bit. From: Pacific Coast Yacht Sales and Service Richmond BC, Canada
a really good reason to have the deck ''tread pattern'' in truck bed liner, in a darker color. did that on my old glass boat and wow...no maintenance! And no more blinding white interior.
@@Captkylejohnson the stuff I had was rubbery, and I never not have shoes on, but it wasn't that rough. throw a 12 oz. bank sinker and miss? the sinker bounced. plus, my ole 23' MayCraft was not a liner boat. So it sound deadened the boat, too. Then, I got really smart, and had a aluminum 26 footer built, that came with Aircraft carrier non-skid deck paint. Now, I do NO hull maintenance, other than spray off the deck. NO more stark white, getting dirty, problems for me. Plus, I'm not trying to look cool. it's a different ''life style'', fishing a big alloy boat. no wax, buffing...nothing! But, ya gotta find the right guy to scuff up your deck, clean it, mask out a tread pattern, and spray the right stuff. My ole boat sold immediately after 10 years of hard daily use. Because it looked great inside. Used a light tan bed liner.
Great tip, I’m getting ready to clean up my non skid but my boat is a 1984 Regal and it chalks up now no matter what I do. I know you said it doesn’t make it more slippery but I can’t see how it wouldn’t. Anyway I will try it the way you do it and hopefully I will get good results too thanks.
Pistonburn it’s the diamond pattern itself that make it non skid. Even with wax on it, the grooves in the pattern are what catch and prevent it from being slippery
Hey Kyle, I have to admit the brush cam really won me over! I thought, this guy is serious about getting his boat clean. Great video and instructions. I'm hopping over to Amazon to put in an order. Bought a new Sea Pro in Dec 2019, love my boat. It's not hard to clean but every trip, I don't care how careful I am it gets dirty. One trout or Spot tail in the boat does the trick. Thanks again JT
Great video. Would love to see how effective it is against dried on stains, like bird poop. That's what always make my boat look like crap. I go away for a week, come back and its covered in bird poop that has to be SCRUBBED off. Going to give this a try and see how it does.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I am a little confused about the polish questions? 6 months ago Linda Zambelli asked what polish you used and you replied that you didn’t use polish because it would make the non-skid too slippery. At 11:40 and 13:10 I “think” you talk about adding a pro polish? I think I am confused or maybe I am just confused on what the best product to use? BTW, thanks Tom Lester for the spray bottle tip on the non-skid deck cleaner, love the idea! Thank you!
Best video out there on cleaning and waxing a non-skid deck Thanks . Lol i just bought that 3m compound before seeing your video now i know what you mean . I have a 2011 Sea Fox and the non-skid never seemed to be great even when it was brand new.
bassmanrayjr thanks! I really appreciate that. After going on a buddies boat that ceramic coated his deck, I’m in the process of coating mine. I’m going to do a follow up video of doing the coating after this.
Bought a dual action polisher and a shurhold brush. The polisher says it's 6" and the brush 6.5". Is this a problem? Also what wax sealer did you use? Thanks
Great video, also try carrying a chamois in your boat, with bass boats when you gill hook a bass or whatever wet the chamois and scrub the carpet re wet if you have to then rinse the chamois in the lake,,,, blood stain gone. Actually works well with many other things like getting fish slime of your hands then rinse out again. Good luck.
Thank you buddy. I am doing this to my non skid today. I am going to try an additional last step after your method by using Meguires ceramic spray wax as an additional sealant on the non skid. As it is has great hydrophobic and sealant properties and is super easy to apply spray on pressure wash or strong hose off. Cheers
I did my boats non skid and very pleased with the results. I will probably add another coat of wax sealant. I am well knackered, it has been very sunny today. Cheers.
You recommend doing the polish on a brand new boat. We should be picking our 22 sea hunt up in the next week or two and curious if we should go ahead and polish it right away or wait until later.
enjoyed your video, no BS just to the point with a little humor thrown in. I live on the SC coast and a a 19 ft skiff that im crazy about keeping clean, I knew there had to be a quicker way, nothing worse than spending a day on the water and THEN having to spend the rest of the day into the evening cleaning my boat. Nothing like anchor mud and fish blood to pretty up a boat! Not to mention the stains it leaves, Ive always used bleach after washing it down but still had stains. Im going to try to the star brite, I already the exact polisher (I also do paint & body work) along with Maguire's and see how it work. just quick clarification, compound originally is used as a cleaner not a sealer so are saying the compound will seal the surface from dirt or at least repel it? thanks for the video .
Last fall I read on a fishing forum about using equal parts of blue gel Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and some good peroxide mix it up good spray it on with a garden sprayer then power wash it off. works very good on the Hull of the boat too to get the scum off from the river water
I did it the exact same way. And that brush seemed to leave a very faint yellow tint on my floors any recommendations on what I did wrong or what can I use to take it off?
I guess I was led wrong after I bought my boat in 2013. I was told to use the StarBrite every time we clean the boat, which is after every time I use it. I've had it covered in the back yard through the winter and uncovered it this past weekend. The first thing I noticed was the smell of cat pee (or maybe squirrel). I thought I had it sealed up but apparently not. I knew I could get the smell out, but I've got a long orange streak running from the console back to the transom. I took the batteries out early last fall to replace them. I bought the new batteries but didn't install them until this weekend. So no batteries in place for 4 months. Starbrite wouldn't take up the orange streak nor the gray spots right in front of the console (the batteries sit right under the steering wheel/console. Sorry for the long story, but do you know what might get rid of that orange streak and the gray patches? Starbrite didn't phase them.
Hooked-n-Rolling Offshore 2009 not if it’s the diamond raised pattern like shown in the video. I can’t speak for any other style of non skid, but mine is not slippery after doing this. I’m actually in the process of ceramic coating it now. I’ll have a video up soon and demonstrate that it’s not slippery.
Great video, this is exactly how I do it also, starbrite cleaner then compound with HF dual action using shurehold brush attachment. But I use a Marine 31 One step heavy cut cleaner wax. it cuts like heavy compound but finished out to a nice shine and waxes at the same time to eliminate the Pro polish step. Ive used pro polish before when waxing hulls but i wasnt overly impressed. if im going to do a two step process id use a compound but my wax of choice is meguiars premium flagship wax, goes on very easy and wipes off effortlessly.
Hey man quick question if I do this is it going to make my non-skid surfaces Slippery When Wet you know like Bon Jovi no seriously I don't want to kill myself when offshore
I've done this already and its awesome. It's not any worse than a brand new boat out of a WAXED mold. If your nonskid is all chalky now you will notice a difference in traction being slightly less after doing this.
HELP! Boat newbie just bought a two year old boat. The deck is filthy every time you walk on it and hard to clean. I'm confused after watching this video twice. Is this correct? Step 1: Rinse with water. Step 2: clean with Star Brite non skid deck cleaner. Step 3: Rinse again Step 4: Polish with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. Step 5: Re-clean with Starbright. Step 6: Rinse again. Step 7: Polish again with Shurhold Yacht Brite Pro Polish. Why do you need to wax twice and with two different products?
That rotary brush has sharp teeth and they scratch off the hard gel coat shell and allow porous internal material to be exposed. This allows dirt to easily get absorbed. ProPolish contains an oil that quickly seals these pores but it evaporates and disappears quickly when in the sun. You need to use something with a hard ceramic matrix. Use wool or soft foam pad and polish to remove oxidized wax and gel coat.
A waxed nonskid will bust your ass.. However you never applied wax or a sealer Polish is shine not protection Wax is protection not shine You could follow up with a dupont sealer or a wax but you will slip and slide When you polish gelcoat and dont seal it, oxidation will begin that hour, immediately. As small as your boat is, you should be able to take off all marks and scuffs in non skid with Magic erasers. great video, love boats (Hit The Like)
Shurhold Pro polish is actually a sealer and thats what I used for the "wax." It surprising it's very slippery after doing this. Is it more slick? Yes, but not too bad. You are correct about using actual polish. You will bust your ass if you do that!
Question - I have a 44' sailboat. Would you do each step one at a time from bow to stern, or do you do a section through all the steps, and then move to another section?
Please explain to me if I have a new boat and use Star Brite deck cleaner what do I need over it to prevent stains/dirt. I don’t know the order of compound, polish, wax etc.
Is your upholstery original? Or did you get it redone? I also have a Sea Hunt. It's a 2007 Triton 207. I'd love to see what you're doing with the boat.
Awesome video! Do you use the same brush to apply the compound and then the wax/polish after? If so how do you clean the brush? Or does it really matter? Thank you!!!
3M perfect it compound and wax might work a bit better over the ultimate compound. You said not to use a paste wax? I know the 3M paste waxes last a very long time.
I agree, I just had the ultimate compound laying around and it spread very easy. Only reason I said that about paste wax is because I tried it, and it was very hard to spread. It was also a pain to buff off. The polymer based waxes are just a lot easier to work with.
Kyle Johnson Fishing sweet well thanks for the reply. I just purchased a trophy that someone neglected pretty bad. I’ve used the Starbright deck cleaner but unfortunately I think I may have to use bleach soft scrub once to get it back to white. Too afraid to use the acid based products.
Kyle, I have a brand new boat with the sand paper gritty style non skid. I fear that I was too hard on it and removed any protection that came from the factory, now it holds dirt and stains like a magnet. Think this same process is what I need to do?
Starbrite and simplegreen didn’t work for me. I used comet scrub it on with a soft brush and let it sit came back and rinsed it off and my deck was white white. Try it out
Did you use the same brush to compound and Polish? If so, what did you use to clean the brush? Last, how often do you repeat this process? Once a season? Thanks. Great video.
Tommy Liu yes, I used the same brush. I took the brush off polisher and cleaned it in a bucket of water with dawn soap. It got all the compound off. It all depends on the sealant (or wax) you used and how often you use your boat. This was the longest lasting I found before ceramic coating. Ceramic coating very easy to apply and outlast anything else I’ve used so far. Putting up a video very soon about DIY ceramic coat.
This was great. Perfect timing. I have the same DA too. Question: can you do this in direct sunlight? And how often should I reapply. I use the boat 4 days a week. Thanks!
I did it on an overcast day because I didn't have anywhere to do it out of the sunlight. I wouldn't do it in direct sunlight. It will most likely make things much harder.
Matt Leicht I’m currently compound, polishing, and ceramic coating mine! I’m a big fan of 3m products, so 3m super duty compound and finesse it glaze polish did a great job for me. Video will be out soon!

Jason Beard it didn’t last that long honestly, but I was in a rush and only had time to do one coat. Only did one coat of ceramic on my hull and inside and it last a solid 9 months with real world use and heavy fishing. The ceramic lasted maybe 4 months on the nonskid.
Hi, Im not from USA,from NZ, so the accent is a little bit hard to pick up on. Would be good if you could get the audio a bit clearer, other that that great!!!
Thanks man. It came on the boat, but the brand is Marine Mat. Here it is on amazon Marine Mat Fishing Ruler 36" by Color Snow Camo/Black www.amazon.com/dp/B011S48DC8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4xWVCbF1SHH52
