How To: Clean / Replace Fuel Filter on a Yamaha YZ and WR

Video breakdown going over how to gain access to the fuel filter on the YZ fuel filter on the fuel injected bikes without the need to cut off and replace the stock fuel line. This is done on the fuel pump of a 2015 YZ250FX, but should work on any of the Yamaha FI bikes.
I made this video after nearly all the information I could find online said you replaced the entire fuel pump assembly when it was time for a new filter. This seemed absurd to me, and on a few forums I found people were able to take apart the fuel pump and gain access but were cutting the fuel line. I have found it is possible to do without cutting anything and being able to reuse the filter, but as you will see it does take a bit of work.

Ya, this video doesn't do justice to just how big of a pain it is to get those 3 tabs loose. Couldn't have done it without this video. Much appreciated!

Thanks for this video, you saved me buying a new assembly! I bought a 2015 that was ridden for 3 hours and then sat since purchased. The regulator, pump and filter were caked in old gas gunk. Thanks man you’re a legend.

Hey quick question Mark…I’m in the same situation. My YZ250F was sitting for 16 months. It’s brand new and only has 11 hours on it. I’ve tried everything to get it started but still haven’t been able to figure out what’s wrong. My gas has been sitting in there for 16 months. I emptied the tank and replaced with fresh gas. But was that enough? Do you think I should take the pump out and check? I verified it works and pumps the new fuel.
@joshmundy
@joshmundy 2 года назад
@@caytelyn891 is say check spark plug, they are notorious for needing new plugs often. Replace plug and verify it’s getting spark. If strong spark then you can check fuel filter but if you have verified fuel is flowing through it, then that’s probably not the issue

This fixed my bike! Thank you for the information. 😁 My 2020 YZ450F has almost 500 hrs and started to stall (run out of fuel) when it only had 1/4 tank of fuel and I was going over whoops at high speed. After the cleaning it runs strong until the tank is completely empty. 😎

The difference between this fuel filter and the WR250R-X is there is not a shroud over the WR250R fuel filter. once you've removed the fuel pump from the WR250R use contact cleaner to clean the filter with no further disassembly or assembly required.

Thanks, this helped me quite a lot. I used it for a 2013 Yamaha XT-250 and it will probably work for any year fuel injected XT-250 since they don't seem to change anything except the colours year by year. I found that I could leave that connector that you have on the fuel line coming off of the pump, back on the hose still attached to the bike, made for an easier job of things. You have to squeeze the two tabs on the connector while pulling out the hose, would be a lot easier with a 2nd person as would most of this job. I elected to buy a new filter, got 3 for $18 from Quantum, they don't look as nice as the original but I hope they will be good...I didn't want to go through all of the trouble of taking apart the pump housing more than once.

Pulled apart my Yammi YBR125 pump today. Sympton was non-starter, but turning over okay, yet not firing. Squirted some juice down the spark plug hole and fired okay, so started looking at fuel supply. Could hear the pump prime okay when turning on ignition, so presumed that was okay and instead went to the injector. Took off the injector and connected to can of carb cleaner with a tight rubber tube and squirted through okay, so wondered if there was a pump issue afterall. So, stripped it back (as per this video - pump unit is fairly similar), submerged the pump + filter in a bucket of water and connected the pump to power. Horrible cloudy crud tried to ooze out with barely any force. Removed filter strainer and tried again and was happy to see that the crud came out better and then in a few seconds was shooting water through at a good pressure. Dried the pump and air-lined it to dry inside. Not gonna try to re-use filter and will get a new one on Ebay (just looks too far gone and don't want to have to strip down again to replace at a later date). Glad to keep the original pump, so hoping it will be okay when it all goes back together :) Thanks for the video Josh - really helps to give me a bit more confidence when I have seen that someone else has overcome a problem like this. Cheers. P.s. Likely all my own fault as I do barely any miles over just a few months of Summer riding and topped up last Summer's petrol that was still in the tank :( When I emptied the tank to get to the pump, the fuel was really yellow - yuck! Gonna look to just throw away old fuel before start ing afresh next Summer :)

Hey! I was able to follow your video and clean my filter. didn't solve my problem though. my bike cuts out doing a long stoppie unless I have a completely full tank. I'm assuming its fuel pump or sending unit related. I tested it by recreating the stall during stoppies and then filling the tank and had a friend lift the rear end to balance point while I held the front brake. ran fine no stalling with a full tank but when starts to stall at 3/4. I'm going to order a new fuel pump assembly.
@joshmundy
@joshmundy 2 года назад
Id say its working fine, the issue is you are probably starving the fuel pump of fuel. Long Stoppie means the rear is up high for a while, so all fuel is pushed to the front of the bike. The fuel pump is located at the rear and lowest most point of the tank. you tilt that forward and now your airgap is where the pump is located. Do this for an extended period of time, and you run out of fuel. Look at how low the fuel pickup is on the filter to the pump, its pretty much 1/3 of an inch from the bottom of the tank. The bike would not have to have the rear end up high very far for it to move the air in the tank to that area.

friend a question, do these pumps have some kind of check valve to keep the fuel in the system? I ask him why my yz450f 2015 takes time to turn on and the mechanic says that the pressure of the pump drops and the system discharges, the clock shows 46 psi while the motorcycle is on when it is turned off it drops to 0 psi immediately
@joshmundy

Honestly have no idea. Sorry man
@stefanoranaivoson9890
@stefanoranaivoson9890 3 года назад
Hello, I had a similar case with YZ450F 2016. it is the fuel pressure regulator which maintains the residual pressure to facilitate restarting. if your pressure drops immediately to 0 psi after the engine is stopped , it means that your regulator is stuck in the open position, in most cases because of unfiltered debris, you can try to clean the fuel pressure regulator or replace it ... condition of the fuel filter to be checked too . I hope it will help

Generator wheel nut came loose, generator wheel justlying there. spun on the shaft broke the key. Bought new wheel new key tested, everything ohmed out, still wont start. Checked all the sensors they all ohm out. Now no freakin spark. I cant beleive the whole harness has one ground on this bike. Found an easier way as opposed to the set manual way. Also what year make and model is your bike you did this on? Pulled the throttle body out on? Or can you pull the injector off without pulling the throttle body? I need to pull and clean my injector.

@joshmundy 3 года назад
Bike in video is for a 2015 YZ250FX. not sure the video will be help to you as your 2012 WR450 is carburated. Anyways, pulling carb is easy, bike needs to be on a stand, 5-10 min job, used to have similar bike. Remove seat, loosen upper subframe bolts and remove lower sub frame bolts, loosed boot clamp and swing up subframe, then tighten upper subframe bolt to hold it up. remove upper shock bolt and let swing arm drop with shock attached below. Now you have full access to remove carb
