How to Clean the Burrs on the Delonghi La Specialista Arte EC9155 (take down made easy).

In this video, we take apart the Delonghi La Specialista Arte EC9155 home espresso machine, in order to remove the burr, to clean it. Keep this video in your queue, any time you need to clean your grinder, unclog it, or change out any parts in the machine.
This is pretty easy to do, actually. Just remove 4 bottom screws, 2 back and 2 front screws, then the 2 side panels pull off with clips, then remove the top part with screws. All screws are easy to access, and the process is pretty straighforward.

Had the problem, that my machine was loosing water. With your disassemble instructions it was quiet easy to get it repaired 🙌 All in all a connector was leaky.

Hi Tom really do like your coffee channel absolutely great videos my current machine is Dedica which I upgraded to rancillio wand thanks to your channel with much better foam milk but my grinder packed up and have now ordered the specialista Arte thanks for uploading this video as this will come in great use just a bit of a pain just to clean didn't realize the grinder was permanently fixed down untill after ordering doh keep up the great work Tom

Hi Tom, I’ve been waiting for this video. Thanks for producing it. Well! At least there is a way of cleaning the grinder. Personally this doesn’t create a problem for me, but I can see it being prohibitive for a lot of reluctant people for good reason. A massive design failure from DeLonghi because it is important to keep the machine clean. Could invalidate the warranty though if there is damage caused due to cleaning. As a side note: I have discovered better consistency regarding pressure, time and coffee delivered by simply adding Robusta beans to the blend and loading a straight basket with 18 grams. Hi Tom! I have a question about the grinder, would you recommend filing of that little nob to make the burrs go closer together? When i turn on the the grinder without beans i can hear the burrs making a strange noise when grinding on lv 1 (the finest). Im having a little trouble with the portafilter you recommend in the comment section and im concerned that the machine can’t grind fine enough for this type of filter. Thanks!

Hi there! I cannot really recommend doing that, because it will probably void warranty. That being said, if you use freshly roasted beans, and grind at the settings 1-3, it should grind fine enough even for the after market basket.

Hello! Great tutorial. I did it all but somehow now my burr seems to be sitting too closely. At first it wasn’t locked in and I got a full cup on way too coarse grounds (so it’s not clogged) and then when I rewatched and locked it in, now nothing at all comes out on “fine” and on “course” a very small amount of fine comes out. Any suggestions?

Thanks for doing this video and showing how to clean the grinder. One of the concerns I had before buying this machine was the inability to clean the grinder in an easy way, but thanks to this video that is no longer an issue. What would your recommended cleaning interval be? Would that depend on what kind of coffee beans used or how many grams/kg that have been grounded, or simply time?

Hi Jonas. I mean, this took me probably 10 minutes to disassemble, and another 10 to assemble. So I would really just do it 3-4 times yearly, depending on your bean type. Try to avoid super dark, oily beans for example. Mine was really not too dirty, and didn't have caked on coffee grounds, and I had been using it a few months. Cheers!

Thanks for your content, I have a couple of problems, I make the first double shots, but the second one does not dripp unitll I push button a few times, and it's not even, how many shots can I pour per minute? do I have to wait a few minutes for it to dripp? also what are the two indicator on the left? I know the top one means I need to fill the water tank when it's lit, right ? what about the button?

Not sure about those issues, you might want to contact your seller about it. I have heard that these have had various issues, which have been fixed under warranty.

Hi Tom! Would this work if my machine won’t grind at all? There’s no sound made when I try to grind. I cleaned the grinder before & even did the reset of the grind settings (holding down 2X & my button) & it worked but now it’s happening again. Also, any tips or video for getting the “cleaning” light to go off? No matter how many times I clean the machine that light always stays on. Thanks!

Tom I would like a bit of advice , I hastily bought a used Gaggia classic on a sale site on internet but it was the 2007 Gaggia deluxe which looks identical to the classic, it was in excellent condition but doesn’t have the three way valve ,I’m not happy with the coffee results , my other older DeLonghi makes much better coffee. Would it be worth my while converting it to the classic or just resell it and buy another used Gaggia classic.

Hi there! If you are not happy with the coffee result, I don’t think adding a three-way solenoid valve is going to make any difference in the cup quality. I would suggest that you just sell it, and either go for a new GCP, or stick with a Dedica. I do believe that the newer GCP model since 2019 is better than their older ones, both ergonomically, and extraction wise.

Hi, Tom. Do the grinder burrs get damaged if you run it without coffee? I prefer to only put in the hopper the exact grams of coffee I need, and it usually runs empty for a few seconds. Thank you!

Hi Ranie, for me, I have never gotten a clog on this machine. And the purse looks pretty clean themselves. So I wouldn’t worry about taking the machine apart and cleaning all the time. But, if it ever does get clogged, you can refer back to this tutorial.

That’s debatable. And it depends on how much you use it. Most people say every month, but I have only cleaned this once since owning it. Considering the effort involved, I probably would just clean this two or three times a year myself.

I have just received my specialista used it for a week and now the grinder stopped working. It will only grind if i set it on number 8 and then the machine pressure goes very high as if the 8 is super fine. I followed your excellent video and vacuumed out my grinder etc. But the problem persists. It makes a noise like it's grinding but does not. Have you ever seen this before? I'm really hoping not to have to go thru warranty service already. I bought my machine in Australia and shipped it to Philippines. Thanks in advance

Hi there! Hmm, that sounds kind of tough. Are you sure the collar to dial in the grinder is engaged? Does it grind properly when the cover is off? It's so strange that it will only grind on setting 8 ..i hear it rue into otherwise almost as if that's Gap between the burrs is too great and then suddenly too close.

I don't think it's possible. It's not accessible anyway, unless you take the machine apart, but I don't remember seeing an adjustment collar.

I took apart the machine, if any of you want to know, as Tom said there is no adjustment collar, so if you want to grind finer you can only cut the knob off (I didn’t do it).

Im pretty sure it can be removed without disassembly everything. In La Specialista Maestro there’s no need to remove any si for screw. Burr can be removed from the top.

Hi Tom. We have this machine but we get an awfull noise when the hooper is empty and from grind level 1 to 2. Level 1 is the worst. It sounds like its grinding against it self. We did deliver it to service but they didn't find anything worng with the machine. Could you please test grind setting 1 and 2 without coffee beans in it and please update me on it. Thanks beforhand :)

When we delivered it to service we got the machine back and got told no issue was found but they ignored our description of the issue and tested the grinder with beans in it. If we wanted to send it in again the diagnostic might cost us money if they cannot find the fault. Quite disappointed in Delonghi´s choice of service center in Norway 🥲

Went to make a cup of coffee this morning and the grinder was not running at all whatsoever. No sounds or anything. I cleaned out the beans but I didn't take the machine apart like this. I don't know if it could be clogged or what because it doesn't even run at all. It worked fine yesterday

Tom do you really have to descale every time within reason. My machine asked to be descaled and I thought it was drinking water. I didn’t see anything in the water or a cloud.

It depends on how hard your water is. I think it's a good idea to descale minimum every 2 months, even if using filtered water.

I don't know, but I am not sure how the manufacturer would know. All you are doing is opening the machine to clean it - not exchanging parts or unhooking any lines.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner I Totally agree with you Tom. It's just annoying when manufacturers make bonehead decisions. BTW congrats on the 10K+ subscribers. Here's one for you, the bottom of the line Eureka Mignon grinder is called the Facile or Filtro depending who you buy it from. It retails here around $200 and you absolutely can grind espresso with it. The only really annoying thing about the grinder is that Eureka used a push button power switch that you have to hold down constantly to get the grinder to work which I think they intentionally fitted to make the grinder unpleasant to use. However with a $6 rocker switch (they're a standard size) you can install it in about 10 minutes and it becomes a very solid excellent quality grinder. I use mine for filter coffee but I did set it up for espresso for a while just to see if it would do it and it works perfectly. It has the same motor and burr set as the rest of the 50mm Mignons but no timer, although I do measured dosing anyway. Just an idea for a video. Best of luck. I watch everything you do.

Hi! I also thought it was weird that there wasn’t an easy way to clean the grinder I went to trusty Google and found a delonghi maintenance video where the guy explained that if you want to clean the burrs you simply rotate the grinder (not taken apart. rotate the whole grinder) counterclockwise and it releases exposing the little basket that you lifted by the little wire handle. And in the video I found they also explained when putting this basket back to make sure it locked back in position as you demonstrated. Here’s the link! This video is for EC9155Mb. That one doesn’t have the option of remove grinder…. Just this way work or taking the machine to delonghi repair center for maintenance. ❤

How to clean espresso machine? I am a beginner, how about vinegar and water 50/50 every 4 months?

I'd really recommend the descaling solution that Delonghi makes. Vinegar reeks. Cheers!

This didn't really seem to help ours. it will grind on the most coarse settings but nothing below a 6.

Ok….so I am in no way capable of doing this…though the video is fantastic. What I’ve done is buy one of those small hand held vacuum and I use it only for my machine.

lol, that was total overkill, you don’t need to dissasamble the unit to clean the top burr, it can be removed via the hopper and can also vacuum from the top, there is a little flap somewhere that can be opened and you insert the supplied long brush and clean the coffee chute

Not true. That works only for the Prestigio and Maestro models, NOT for the Arte.

Why would delonghi make an espresso machine with an undetachable hopper is beyond me. Perhaps Tom is able to shed some light on it😢

This is such a dumb decision made by DeLonghi, in all honesty. I'm just amazed that they thought this is a good idea. Probably just to upsell the higher-end models or thirst for service dollars $$$. I feel like the arte is no art, it looks horrible and has plastic side panels, whereas the Maestro, for example, is an all-metal design. I don't know man, but this just makes me wonder what direction DeLonghi is going towards. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for your input. I find this Arte to actually be a better looking design than the Prestigio or Maestro, which is why I bought it. You are correct though, that it made no sense to make the bean hopper that way. I don't know either what caused them to make that decision. I don't mind the side panels, as this machine can be had for only €400.

Completely unnecessary. Read the manual Simply remove the, Hopper, turn the base to “remove” and take the grinder out. No dismantling whatsoever ever.
