YOU SIR ARE AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND!!!! I have been having issues with my car for the last 3 weeks. I knew it was with the low speed circuit but I didn't know where the jets were! This video saved my bacon! I don't know how long it might have taken me to figure this out if it wasn't for this video! My car runs like a sewing machine again. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I just bought a '89 YJ. I was having trouble with the idle. All I kept seeing on RU-vid was nutter bypasses. I found your video, tried it. Now shes purring. You should rename the video "Before you do a nutter bypass try this".

I inherited my grandfathers '83 CJ5. It sat for a good 2 years during his battle with cancer, causing some kind of build up in the fuel system. Me and my father spent months figuring it out just to get it to start again. Now every now and again I have the problems described in the video. I cleaned it a month ago and it ran fine. Use it around town every few days only a mile or two and its a problem again. I'm new to automotive stuff as its the only vehicle I've ever worked on because it meant so much to my grandfather and now to me. Anyone who happens to see this, if you know anything that could be causing this, your feedback would be appreciated.

Sometimes the fuel tanks get trash in them or they start rusting from the inside out creating debris that can clog things. This was always an issue for old jeeps and the Carter BBD.

Thank you. I appreciate that you provided this information. My 1984 CJ7 I-6, 4.2 would not idle when cold and it ran pretty ruff. I had done all of the electrical tune up things and still no cold idle. I had a extra used Carter carburetor that I practiced taking apart as you showed. Then I did the Jeep carburetor. I used Berrymans Chemtool carburetor cleaner by putting the carb parts in a jar and adding the carb cleaner to soak for 1 hour and some torch cleaning wires to mechanically clean the jets. I put the carb back together and the Jeep starts up quickly, runs and idles like new.

I know what you mean about the crap from the fuel tank clogging it up. I had a BBD on my Australian 1974 Valiant Regal and it kept clogging with an orangey sludge while the car was laid up. When it dried out, it looked like paint powder all through the carb. I kept sending it to a local guy popular in Chrysler circles and he'd rebuilt it repeatedly and kept asking what it was. It had us both confused until I realised the inside of the tank was rusting and the fine powdery rust was making it past the fuel filter and causing the problem.

I know this is an older vid, but thank you for it. One of my idle tubes was clogged. It didn't solve all of my idle issues on my 1986 Amc Eagle, but it's a good start in the right direction. Thank You.

Any CJ owner that has a power brake booster, you MUST remove the carb to do this. IE: you can not remove the choke plate rod without interference with the master cylinder.

Purchased a 76 CJ-5 6cyl 3spd in Oct and have driven it some disappointed about fuel economy still was hoping to get better then 10mpg . Did poor a gal of lacquer thinner in the tank a bumped my mpg up a little too 12 mpg but still looking for better. Would like to get the fuel gage working.
@DanTheOldToolMan
@DanTheOldToolMan Год назад
I would be careful with the lacquer thinner. Make sure the carb is tuned properly and check out ignition upgrade options. My last 4.2 ran like a different machine when I added a MSD Streetfighter ignition box, MSD coil, and new distributor.
@rudyjavurek2817
@rudyjavurek2817 Год назад
@Dan The Tool Man Still want to figure it out silly thing only has a few parts. On a positive note, lacquer thinner did clean a choked up catalytic converter on my 01 Grand Small shop found it difficult to believe, but a passing Missouri's emissions was in my hands.

Helpful video, thank you. Novice here...parts store man said to count the turns on the two screws going out on the venturi cluster and tighten back to SAME amount of turns so that the adjustment does not change. You did not mention this in your procedure so just wondering if that is critical?
@DanTheOldToolMan
@DanTheOldToolMan 6 лет назад
paul buschman I never counted the number of turns on this part and have not had issues. The screws have to be snug to hold the cluster in place and the should return to their original position or very close. Your guy could be correct, but I’ve never done that.

Quick Question: You keep mentioning that you are cleaning IDLE jets.... is there Another set of jets on this carb. as well.?? And how do / would you clean those other jets.?? Thanks. Great video.
@DanTheOldToolMan

It’s been awhile since I posted this video but I should have possibly referred to them as idle tubes to be more technically correct. These aren’t the main jets. Video likes and subscriptions are appreciated!

James Sanchez - I don’t want to risk dropping the ball down the intake when the carb is on the Jeep. You can try a magnet if you have to remove yours, but be careful. Like and Subscribe!

I haven't done it since my carburetor is pretty much new, but I've read a recommendation a few places that drilling the idle tubes out to 0.032" keeps those little guys from clogging all of the time. I found my way into a 1990 Jeep Wrangler with the 4.2 liter engine about 3 years ago and have personally gone through, or had someone else go through, about everything on it in order to get it running relatively well as a daily driver. The two things that have helped me more than anything else is the real Chrysler service manual and the website home.sprynet.com/~dale02 ...That website is one of the places with that recommendation and the rest of the information there has not let me down yet.
@peterushbrook5270

Yes!! That was a factory recommendation per a TSB. They'll likely never clog again as a result.
