Dusty refrigerator coils can cause inefficient running of the appliance. Like clean a/c condenser fins, the small investment in time can extend the life of a costly appliance.
The process is fairly simple. We used a vacuum cleaner to start get the easiest to reach dust and dirt and then followed that up with a 2 inch brush to do a more thorough cleaning of the coils deeper into the fridge bottom. The refrigerator and freeze relay on the coils to rid the appliance of unwanted heat and keep the temperature at the proper working temperature.
We used a blue long flexible handle brush . You can find it on amazon.

I'm about to do this on a 15-year-old fridge that has never been cleaned as far as I know. I love that the notice to do it every 3-4 months is behind the cover at the bottom of the refrigerator where no one will see it, ever unless they are already doing that.

I,m convinced that the dust under my fridge all over the evaparator coils was causing the thermal relay to cut the circuit

Thanks for the great video. We learned this the hard way. We have two golden retrievers, and we’d owned the refrigerator for 13 years when it died. We ordered a new one, and in the process of moving out the old one saw, with horror, the amount of dirt and dog hair that had been trapped. We installed the new fridge, cleaned the old one, and it miraculously came back to life. 🤣🐶🐶

@@Housebarons I know that air needs to free-flow to that area of the fridge, but have you ever found anything, like some sort of screen, that can be put in front of the grill and limit dirt/dog hair but still allow air to flow in freely?
@Housebarons
@Housebarons Год назад
Hey Elizabeth, I have not. Interesting idea. My guess is they don’t design them that way because the smaller surface area would clog faster and thus require more frequent maintenance - else the fridge would over heat or at least become inefficient. But that’s a guess….

Thank you soooo much for that brush idea. I just finished cleaning my 13 year old fridge. I always wanted to do this but never had the gusts. Wow so much dust under that fridge. I had a smaller bleu brush. With the dust going all over the place as I was using the brush all over the coils and everywhere, I put a wet thin cloth over the brush (J cloth). The dust ended up more on the cloth that on the floor or in the air. Thanks again. I am so glad I did this. I am a 62 year old woman. If I did it anyone can do it too. Bye

Just finished cleaning my Kenmore refrigerator. I used a thinner bottle brush as my layers of coils were closer together. First I took off the plastic shield cover from the back of the refrigerator and cleaned the coils. And while I was at it, I also cleaned the fan and all the other lines that were back there. Then I went to the front of the refrigerator and got out all the dust bunnies that had been pushed to the front of the coils while I was cleaning from the back. I also used a yardstick and attached double sided scotch tape to pick up the dust bunnies that I could not reach with the brush. Dusted the sides and top, and pushed it back into place. My husband said, "It runs quieter now." : ~)

We have 5 cats and the cat hair accumulates quickly on the condenser coils located behind our refrigerator. We have had major problems with our new refrigerator on it not cooling well at all, in fact temps getting up to 47 degrees for more than 6 hours! We have a tech coming out today to figure out what is going on. I did pull the refrigerator out the other night and removed the back plate and took the vacuum hose without touching the coils and just lightly vacuumed. But, there is a ton of dust and cat hair between the coils and honestly I have been afraid to stick any type of soft bristle brush between them for fear of damaging something. Anyway, thanks for the video!

For some of the other coil designs some suggest using an air compressor or leaf blower and to help catch the dust use a box fan and flour/tea towel draped over the fan as a filter.

only until I removed the doors and shelves I flipped the fridge on the side and only then i was able to see the build up of lint and dust on the very bottom but not visible by just looking underneath you would have to flip the fridge on its side to see the bottom and then Vacuumed but it was too late because i had already had a new fridge delivered because everyone said it was 14 years old it will only keep breaking down But I hope some needy person can take it in from the curb before sanitation takes it away i will leave green masking tape saying it works I wish i flipped it over before i bought a new one I,m convinced that the lack off ventilation was causing a thermal overload to trip because it would run fine after being shut off for a couple of hours then after 6 hours or so it would start to click off compressor.... live and learn but I watched over 100 you tube videos not a single video said to flip it over and look underneath so much for A-eye google search

The price on Amazon was excellent for that brush. Unfortunately our Maytag Fridge does not have the coils open. There is a type of screening in front of the coils and they also appear to face to the side where we cannot reach them. It is smelling really dirty/bad under there and there appears to be a tray of some kind that probably needs to be cleaned? We seriously need some help with this.

Hey Robert, I’d do an internet search about you exact model and see if anyone else has tackled your specific model. Thx for watching!
@keithhoffman22
@keithhoffman22 Год назад
Robert, how did you solve this problem? I have a Kenmore (Frigidaire) top freezer refrigerator which also has the coils oriented 90 degrees to the front of the fridge (as compared to this video) and has aluminum fins between the coils which obstruct inserting a brush into the coils. It's easy to wipe the front coil and fins off by hand but accessing the others seems mission impossible? Canned air did nothing. I could use pressurized air from a compressor. That's sort of my only idea. In many of the 'coil cleaning brushes' reviews on amazon, various individuals will talk about the brush being too big because of the coil orientation so I know this isn't a rare problem.

@cpt.freaknlost5832
@cpt.freaknlost5832 2 года назад
You might want to unplug unit just to be safe and not hit the rotating fan blades that circulate air over coils. To your question about freezing drain line you should call manufacturer help line their might be a recall for the problem. I know of an issue on Samsung models around 2016 that had that problem and freezer coils blocking up ice and defrosting in bottom of compartment and leaking on floor. Turns out their was a faulty temp sensor that was the issue. Good luck

My KitchenAid fridge is basically designed so the coils are next to impossible to clean. The front has a fence of coils that prevent you from reaching any coils beyond it. Manufacturer knows this and wants fridge to fail fast so you are buying a new fridge every 5-10 yrs instead of 20-30 like we used to. Manufacturer deserves to go to jail for this. It's ridiculous

My Siemens fridge is completely unaccessible. Everything is enclosed in fused plastic. The only screws are those mounting the stands and the actual freezer compartment, but removing that requires you to disconnect the refrigerant tubes, which is obviously not a consumer job. Total scam. I can't even see how much dust is on the coils and fins.
