Been cleaning sockets and wrenches etc. by hand for a week now due to my job burning down with my tools inside. My hands are exhausted so I bought a vibration tumbler with green plastic media to fill it with. Works wonders, about 2 hours each batch and all the burn, rust, and black soot is gone.

Years ago I picked up dozens of rusty Power Kraft sockets. I then spent a lot of time cleaning them with a wire wheel. I must say, I like your method much better. BTW, I have had these sockets for a long time and they still have not rusted again. Not sure about other brands, just making a comment about Power Kraft stuff. Thanks again for your tip!

I ended up using a combo of your technique (for the heavy rust) and acid etch (vinegar) to get the oxide sockets fresh. Then I redid the oxide with a kit from Caswell. Those sockets look brand new!

SK Wayne is old school SK. You will find guys in the tool world who will say SK Wayne wrenches are better than the newer SK wrenches. I'm not as snobby, I like all SK tools. I've used the wire wheel on the bench grinder before but never a sanding block. Worth a try for sure. I wonder if balling up some steel wool and jamming it down inside the socket would clear out some of the old gunk and rust... might have to try that myself. I've watched vids on electrolysis but my battery chargers are 'too smart' they click off when it's not an actual battery being charged. With all the old dirty tools I find I'll be trying your method before long.
@Toyotas_n__Tools

I was thinking about picking up some old sk sockets and if you notice SK's rust easier then most it seems or maybe those sockets are used more thats why... Well I ended up finding a set of deeps and shallows with all the sizes I need brand new old stock for a deal!

I deal with a lot of rust. If I wanted work on some sockets, first clean them with an industrial degreaser, then dump the sockets into Evaporust, then a polish with Black Emery on a felt buff. Done. If you want a mirror finish, and I mean a clear reflection (assuming the alloy allows for it) - this is optional - follow up with a yellow rouge or something similar on a treated muslin buff. Easy peasy.
@chrislawrence8141
@chrislawrence8141 6 лет назад
This is similar to what I have been doing for years. I use steel wool saturated with WD40 and my impact.....works well and the steel wool conforms to the sockets well

mdlee52 I tired vinegar with salt. It worked but only removed rust from the bottom (salt) side, and takes a few hours. I'd like to have one those big buffers and try the jewelers rouge. I have a 5 gallon bucket full of rusty tools. The old ATD sockets are total junk, you cannot even read the size on the sockets - don't buy that shit.

Late to the party here but how do you get rust out from inside the socket?
@JUSTINATV
@JUSTINATV Год назад
I use a hex brush kit or a gun cleaning tool kit. I put the brushes (brass) on the drill or hex driver and let it have at it. Both kits have multiple sizes so pretty much no matter what size the socket, you have a brush for it.

JUSTIN ATV i'm new to your channel, but hope you can help me. Is that an impact wrench or an impact driver you're using? I've got a shed load of sockets i'd like to restore and would appreciate detail on how you mount them to the power tool. I'm sure by now you've guessed i'm not a mechanic/engineer, but i'm trying to learn, so any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I was using a 1/4in hex driver with a adapter from 1/4 hex to the appropriate socket drive. You can pick those up in a 3 pac from just about anywhere. But you can use an impact wrench as well. Thanks for checking out my video/channel! If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

I wanna say it was 800 grit (this video is a couple years old). It didn't damage any of the remaining chrome, but where chrome had already been flaking off it smoothed those sharp edges down.
