To everyone who thinks that this is a cheap way to do it… Of course if the solenoids are bad you have to change them. This video is not about "how to be cheap with your car". This video is about finding a problem. Let me explain. If you experience low power, misfires on multiple cylinders and rough idle, the problem might be located in the vanos system because it controls the engine timing. But those symptoms can be related to many other systems and sensors- it might be o2 sensor, valvetronic system, camshft position sensors, crankshaft position sensor, spark plugs and ignition coils, bad wiring etc... imagine to change all those components (it won’t be cheap) and at the end you find out that the problem was a vacuum leek ... :) so it’s good thing for you to be able to check different systems and components and while you checking them it’s not bad idea to clean what you can, especially if something work properly when it’s clean. :)

Thanks for the cleaning tip. Great way to diagnose issue. In my case it was not the Vanos but oil in the eccentric shaft position sensor (N52 engine) causing rough running. Cleaning the Vanos helped eliminate that possible problem from the equation and not have to take the valve cover off unless I really needed to.

Lol... Dude, I've got to admit, you're very clever but why you didn't left the power supply plugged in and used the power extension cord switch to on and off from there instead of pulling out the 12v power supply... :)

That’s a good question and here’s the answer. I tried to use the switch but it controls the solenoid much slower than I wanted to. I wanted to open and close the valve inside the solenoid much quicker. In my opinion quicker movement of the valve cleans up better the dirt inside the solenoid.

The best way is to place a switch or button on the 12V line and not the 230V. The high voltage system is not designed to be tapped continously like that :) in most cases you'll be fine but in some cases you may fry the 12V adapter or short out your solenoid. 230V are ment to plug in and use and it is only because of high safety standards most people get away with it without actually something happening to them. I say most because those who are not that lucky usually do not go post about it later. No hate, just a tip to stay safe.

Thank you for the interest. I think many twelve volt adapters will do the job. I'm using 12 volt adapter from my old philips trimmer. The adapter must have 2 wire cable. If you can't find 2 wire 12 volt adapter, then you can use old but charged car battery. ( don't use the battery from your car, especially if it's connected to the car's electrical circuit.!!!!)

funny with music... ppl saying buy new vanos solenoids... c'mon man... not every wants to dump $200 each if they still work fine (2x for 6-cyl, 4x for 8-cyl) If you got money to burn like that, don't buy new solenoids, buy a new BMW after yours gets ~75k miles lmao 🤣

It could be! But it could be many different things like O2 sensor, spark plugs and ignition coils, injectors etc.. In my opinion cleaning vanos solenoids is the first thing to do. It will be cheap and my fix the problem. If not, then you know that the problem is elsewhere.

Just one more thing. When you cleaning the solenoids you must connect them with 12 volts power supply just to be sure that the internal valve move freely and they work properly. Like I show you in the video.

Someone gave me some new oem vanos solenoids, should I replace them? I don’t know if they have ever been done on my car. Also it’s really easy to access and change them out?

If you’re experiencing hesitation during acceleration and your engine works uneven, then you should try to change them or check the old ones just to be sure that the problem is in the solenoids. If you don’t have problem and the car works fine you don’t need to change them. But keep the new ones you have just in case. It’s easy to reach the solenoids but first you have to remove the engine cover and the intake system. When you take out the solenoids to change or check the old ones ALWAYS change the rubber oil rings on your solenoids with new ones, even if your old solenoids works fine. This will prevent oil leaks.

@@carcrazychannel Yeah the car doesn’t hesitate during acceleration or anything it runs pretty good, the idle isn’t perfect though I did plugs and coils already. Valve Stem Seals are going bad also lol

@@FELIPE8226M About bad idling, if the problem stays after you change the coils and plugs or bad idling appears again shortly after you change the plugs, then you must take your car to a mechanic and ask him to do a smoke test. Very often Bad idling is caused by vacuum leaks. Bad idling can be caused by bad sensor too, like crankshaft sensor, O2 sensor, camshaft sensor, MASS/MAF sensor etc….

@@carcrazychannel The idling isn’t that bad it just feels like every once in awhile there is a slight misfire or something, and I only replaced like 2 coils maybe I should just do all of them, the car has 158k miles. I have a check engine light codes po491 and po492 for secondary air injection the pump also makes a noise when I first do cold start. I have a new pump just havnt got around to putting it in

@@FELIPE8226M I had a problem with my secondary air system too. But I solve that problem permanently by removing the whole system physically from the car and then bring the car for removing the system from the ECU. This is way more cheaper than rebuilding the system and prevents future repairs. Please have in mind that If your country has a strict emissions policy for vehicles, you may not pass the emissions test without this system.

I can’t tell because I have never used that product. If it’s good oil degreaser it will help with cleaning.

I suppose you could put it in a small jug like the video does, fill the jug with brake cleaner, and the rest of the ultrasonic cleaner with water to minimise waste, keep the solenoid open and just let the sonic do its work ?
