So one of the things I noticed with our Apple Watch accessories video was how unpleasant looking some of long term use straps were. So we decided to figure out how to clean them. Officially, according to Apple and then if that didn’t work, unofficially.
Here’s the one thing that I’ve learned while making this video: I don’t wash my straps enough.
Best Apple Watch Series 7 Accessories: • I Spent $7500 On Apple...
Best iPhone 13 Accessories: • We Spent $10,000 On iP...
Best iPhone 13 Cases: • I Spent $7500 On Apple...
Fake Vs. Real: • I spent $20 on 6 Fake ...
In this video:
0:00 Intro
0:24 Cleaning Leather Link
1:14 Cleaning Sport Band/Solo Loop
2:10 Cleaning Sport Loop/Braided Solo Loop
#UnSponsoredContent #RealUsage #ReviewerNotInfluencer
Right off the bat, Apple’s suggestions for cleaning watch straps is to wipe them all down with a non-abrasive, lint-free cloth with fresh water. There’s nothing about using chemicals in the cleaning instructions from Apple…
Apple Watch Leather Link
For the Leather Link, we noticed that the area around the wrist contact area getting dirty. After trying Apple’s method of cleaning, we decided to try using a leather upholstery cleaner. That did nothing either which was odd given that chemicals usually work. The last thing we did before giving up was to take a look at the strap using our microscope and realized that the discoloration was coming from the leather link actually being damaged.
Apple Watch Sport Band/Solo Loop
For the elastomer products, we had a couple of stains. On the Sport Band, the inside of the strap was leaving marks on the other strap. On the Solo Loop, the stain was right around the lug area. Now after the fresh water wipe down didn’t do anything with the stains, we decided to try a mixture of bleach and fresh water. We let the bands sit in the mixture for several hours and to our disappointment, the stains on the Sport Band didn’t disappear but the Solo Loop’s stain went away.
Now after the bleach treatment, we noticed that the bands were brighter than before so that’s good to know.
Apple Watch Sport Loop/Braided Solo Loop
These two products that benefited the most from cleaning were the Sport Loops and Braided Solo Loops. Now the fresh water wipe down didn’t do anything for the bands so we decided to go with soaking the bands with OxyClean. Whatever is in the chemical does wonder’s for cleaning the strap.
The container that we soaked the bands in definitely had some dirty water in it. The difference in the colors of bands was night and day after drying the bands and putting them side by side.
For the Solo Loops, the darker loop didn’t really benefit (visually) from the cleaning but the orange strap that we had went from looking like I spent my days rolling my wrist in dirt to looking like it was brand new.
The last thing we’ll say about this is that your bands will smell like OxyClean. So we suggest rinsing your bands with water a few times or running it with a load of laundry.

For fabric bands, I just put them in a fine mesh laundry bag and throw them in with my regular laundry. Then I let them air dry. So far, they've always come out clean and bright. I wash them about once a week when I do laundry, so it's pretty easy to keep them clean. The velcro straps dry quite fast, a couple hours max. The elastic ones usually have to dry overnight, especially those thicker woven ones.

Honestly, very helpful video. I struggle with methods to clean my bands as well and this video provides some insightful tips. I've noticed overtime some of my lighter colored bands becoming darkened and just visibly dirty and will definitely try some of these cleaning methods. Love the content and transparency provided on your channel.

I’ve had great success cleaning the braided solo loops just putting them in a delicates mesh bag and washing them in a standard clothes washing machine with tide detergent. I wash them at least once a week to avoid any stains causing permanent discoloration and preventing odor buildup

My preference is the sport loop when exercising because of the fit / comfort factor. However they can be bacteria factories if you don’t wash them regularly. I rinse my band under water after each training session and pat dry with a towel, then let it sit to dry out for a couple of hours. For this reason I have several bands that I rotate. Then once every couple of weeks I will hand wash the bands with eco friendly laundry liquid. Keeps them looking and smelling fresh. Great video guys!!

What about elasticity? Husband wears his strait, it is dirty and a little loose compared to first bought. After washing, does it shrink? What if put in the dryer?

I wasn’t worried so much about my silicone solo loop, but I recently got the sport loop and was just thinking about this. I usually wear mine in the shower after my weekend morning workout (no soap, just rinse). I’m hoping that bi-weekly act will be enough, but I’ll keep an eye on it. Thanks for the tips!

I had that same Platinum/Black Nike Sport band and it was quite discolored by the time I moved on, the tab that folded in had a hint of green if I recall correctly. I'm not sure how to get my braided solo loop to shrink back to normal size, it's stretched enough to no longer be snug when wearing.

I can’t believe how dirty the fabric loops get so quickly!! I just use some of the antibacterial handwash from the side of the hand basin and some hot water. I rub it in a bit and let soak for the day. That evening get an old toothbrush and give a light scrub. Comes up great

Year late for this, but I heard that some people suggest to just toss the bands into a large pocket, like a cargo pants big pocket. Button the pocket, so the bands don't fall out, and that seems to do the trick for the bands they had. Curious on this, since I currently have a 3rd party LifeProof band that is in need to replacing and I've had my eye on the braided solo loop. Will be wanting to keep that one clean.

I throw my bands in a mesh bag and throw them in the washing machine with workout clothes. I use all free clear order relief and Lysol laundry sanitizer. Works great for me. I have sensitive skin so I have to be careful with my detergents. As for the solo loop(don’t have one yet) does it stretch out…some ppl say yes a lot but after washing it and throwing it in the dry it shrinks back..any thought on this?

For my braided loops (and I will be using the same method with my Trail Loop, Alpine Loop) I have a little mesh wash bag (that is for washing small delicate items in a washing machine) I put the band in the mesh bag, use a mild soap (I use Fairy Non Biological) and wash it on the machine's delicate cycle, I then either select no spin, or at most 400 rpm spin speed. After washing it comes up like new.

it’s wild how quickly and how dirty fabric watch bands can get and how you don’t really notice until it’s drastic. i bought one that had a painting printed on it, and even though the painting had a darker color palette, it was extremely obvious how dirty it was once i had noticed. it was like a different painting on the band. and to be fair it could be affected by the fact that i work in a bakery that has a good few chocolate products that i have to make, but even still, it’s wild how dirty the part that was only in touch with my skin and not really anything else was.

Using Nike sports loop for the series 6 so it’s black don’t really see any dirt marks. I usually just rub it down with water just enough to damp it and I just Febreze it and let it dry under the sun. Thing with this band it doesn’t absorb sweat as much and dries really well during my intense runs. I think it’s a clear sign if it start to stink or u get red marks and itches on ur wrist then u know it’s time to wash😆.

I only wear sport loops, and I wash them regularly. I hand wash them with Castile soap (which I use for most laundry and house cleaning), and scrub for a few minutes. I wash all of my sport loops every couple of months, and the difference is stark. One reason mine look dirty sooner is that I’m a brown-skinned Black person; so any skin rubbing off is already darker. But everyone has skin cells and sweat and so on collecting on the bands. Taking ten minutes to wash them makes sense. Any mild detergent would work fine, no need to be aggressive with it, IME.
