Cleaning expert, Melissa Maker, walks you through the products and tools you'll need as well as the simple steps to cleaning a glass stovetop quickly and effectively.
If you don't take care of it, you'll get unsightly build-up along with scratching, pitting (tiny chips, craters or dents in the glass) and that can lead to cracking, which means you need to replace the stovetop ($$$).
Tools you'll need:
1) Microfiber cloth - this is used at the end to buff the stovetop dry.
2) Sponge - make sure it is clean and ONLY use the cellulose (spongy) side.
3) Bowl with hot water - Fill the bowl half way with hot water.
4) Dish liquid - You need a couple tablespoons, add to the hot water and stir.
5) Tea towels or rags - Use a few and make sure that you can cover the entire stovetop with the rags.
6) Baking soda - used to sprinkle over the stovetop.
7) Paper towel - used to pick up any outstanding debris on the stovetop before you get going with the tip.
8) Rubber gloves - the water gets really hot, no need to burn yourself.
Here are the steps:
Please ONLY DO THIS WHEN TH STOVE IS COOLED. Never, ever do this on a hot stove.
1) Add hot water to the bowl. Pour in dish liquid.
2) Place rags in bowl and agitate gently, mixing the soap in the water and getting the cloths fully saturated.
3) Sprinkle baking soda over the entire stovetop.
4) Wring out the rags half way; you want them to be wett-ish so that they can activate the baking soda and loosen the build up.
5) Let this sit for 15 minutes. If you have really bad stains, try leaving it for a few hours, adding water to the stovetop as it dries out. You want to keep the baking soda moistened.
6) Remove all but one rag. Begin at the top of the stove and wipe clean in an 'S' pattern.
7) Take soft part of the sponge and run under cool water. wipe up any debris or work out any tough stains with the sponge. If you encounter something really challenging try using a SKrAPr (we are obsessed with them). Don't even think about a razor blade, it's super dangerous and you will almost certainly scratch the stovetop.
8) Finally, take the microfiber cloth and buff the stovetop to a dry shine. You may want to add some glass cleaner at this point if you are getting a lot of streaks.
Voila! Gorgeous!
Remember to clean the stovetop after each use so that you never face this build-up issue. It can get so bad if you leave it, you are continually re-burning food on to a glass surface. It looks horrible too!
Good luck!

Melissa - I've been trying various methods to clean my glass stove top without damaging it for sometime and without success. Your technique works great. I had to treat the stove top twice as it was very caked on after a weekend of pickling dills and beets. I used your method in between pickling of the dills and beets and it was well worth it. Clean up after the beets (sugar water syrup base) that of course splashes on the cook top was a cinch. Your tip worked amazingly. Thank you.

Thank you for your ideas! Something I loved was that you use old wash rags instead of paper towels - saves money and works - well, except on the tough stuff, which I expected! But someone else said use the real flat top stove cleaner for that, as it polishes, as well. As far as I see it, you'll save a bundle using the baking soda to begin with, then once/week with the special cleaner will be an added plus. (LOVE THAT SCRAPER, BY THE WAY!)

Me too! Had no idea how important it is to clean the glass after each meal. There is already cooked food on it and I think some scratches too. Haven't moved in yet, but hope I will be able to clean it completely. Renters must not have figured out to use oven because it is spotless!

Thank you for this amazing tip for cleaning my glass stove top. It's one of my pet peeves because it is so hard to keep it looking new & shiny. I usually use glass cleaner with a soft cloth that helps too, but your idea is what I will use initially to start. Great videos and great ideas. Keep up the good "work".

I did one minor change to your cleaning tip. I took two dish cloths, wet them thoroughly, wrung them out, placed them in the microwave for 5 minutes on high, and then placed them on the stove top. One side benefit is the steaming of the cloths in the microwave can help you wipe the crusties off the inside of the microwave.

I just wanted to come back here all these years later and say thanks for the tip Melissa. I first watched this video I think... like 2 or 3 years after you made it? And this has been how I clean my stove ever since. I've never looked back. I've given the trick to many friends and just now my little sister called me to ask how to degrease her stove. Told her how to do it but figured "Just in case I'll send her the video." And I couldn't believe this video was so old now. So thanks Melissa! For my number one cleaning tip besides "Vinegar is your friend"

Hi there :) I just wanted to say a BIG thank you for giving me a new glass top :D Anybody who is sceptical know that it does actually work. If it doesn't it's because you just have to leave it on for more time. I did have to scrape it off with the edge of a knife (as I don't have a scraper) but it came off soooo easily! Again thank you! I have now subscribed to your channel and will watch other videos too! Great work! :)

Hello Melissa, I love your video. At my parents house we had a glass stove top. Although, after moving out to my new house we have the old style stove top with the burners, I was wondering if you can tell me how to properly clean it. Thank you.

I had high hopes for this video because every other video by Melissa has been splendid, helpful, and very educational. However, this method did not work for me and my glass stove top almost at all. It made a tiny dent in the burnt parts of the stove, though the rest was fine. However that wasn't, I think, the point of the video as it more so seems aimed towards cleaning the stove top altogether. I've found other videos that helped more, but so far none have exactly fixed the issue. Anyway, thank you for the video regardless. I'm glad to see it's helped other people out!

It's even easier if you use warmed distilled white vinegar instead of water the girl in this video wasted a ton of baking soda by not using vinegar a little bit of baking soda and vinegar goes a long way on a stove this dirty the dish soap wouldn't have even been needed. Nor would you have to wait any longer than about 3 minutes.

Hi Melissa! Great cleaning tips. I’ve been on a watching binge for a few days now! Lol! Have a question; how does one clean the AC output vents? Where the cold air comes out in your house for cooling. I see fuzzies there. Vacuuming seemed the only way? But I bet you have a more thorough method. Also, the bathroom fan vents.
