I want to clone a SSD with OS and it's 120GB, want to clone it to another SSD but it's 750GB, so just use the "manual" option and "as is" (or "manual) ? that's it or anything else I should know about, a little nervous never done this before and it's OS SSD. some say don't do it in windows and do it via boot disk, is that right?

Thanks for the informative video. Questions: 1) Does it matter which drive the Cloning software is installed and running from (Source or Destination) when initiating clone? (Wouldn't it glitch/loop trying to clone to or from a hard drive that is running a program?) 2) Or do you need to boot from a separate boot CD/DVD disk instead of running clone software on Source or destination disk during the clone process?

Nice Steve! My Lenovo is currently backing up its HDD to a spare HDD, using Acronis backup. Next step will be copying to my new 1T SSD. I’m looking forward to a faster laptop. One complaint I have with the Lenovo is the absolutely terrible keyboard. It either double types or skips letters.

Actually USB 3.0 is not always blue. I recently came across black, which takes a little closer investigating to identify. If you come across one that is not blue, it will have the usb symbol "SS" somewhere nearby. It stands for super speed, I believe.

Thanks. I found this video lesson so useful as a novice. May I please ask you for my education. Did you install the SSD first into your laptop before cloning/copying the OS onto it from your previous HDD? Is that the procedure I have to follow for this exercise? I have C and D partitioning on my HDD. Can the SSD also be partitioned? Should it be? So thankful for your expertise advice. Thank you once again for this lesson on this video.
@TechSteve
@TechSteve 5 лет назад
I cloned the original to the ssd and then I cloned it back to sell the laptop. The software will do everything. Format and partition to “clone” the original hard drive. The only thing is that you have to make sure the drive that your moving to has a enough storage for the files that on the original. Example the laptop with a 1TB hdd that only has 90gb of data can be cloned to a 250gb ssd. Once it’s done the extra storage will available and the partition and files will match the original.

@@TechSteve Thanks Steve for your very valuable advice. My laptop has 320 HDD. I am going to replace it with 256 GB SSD. So once he cloning of the SSD is done, will the drive C and D be created in the SSD as the original HDD? Shall be pleased to have your advice.

on acronis, when you cannot fit the harddrive you want to clone and it tells you that you can exlude cloning what you don't want, does the checkmark indicate what you don't want, or does the checkmark indicate what you wish to keep. That part I find a bit confusing. Thanks

Tech Steve, I have a hard drive array raid0. Two 1TB HD's in it. One of them is giving me warnings and I know if it fails I lose both so I want (need) to switch them out. I'd love to change it to a raid1 to avoid this issue in the future, but for right now I'd be happy stabilizing. I have another 1.5 TB hard drive in the computer separate from the array as a back up. With acronis could I mirror the two hard drive array to the 1.5 backup, put in two new drives then mirror it back? I also have a large external HD if it would be easier to mirror to an external for this purpose. Thanks in advance for any advice you might have to offer!

I clone is a exact copy, if the drive you clone to a drive that’s the same size or has enough space. You can make multiple copies but I don’t know what the point would be. Also you will have to install the cloned Hard Drive in the same computer because of the registry matches that computer.
@brimars2172

In the video, you already have the SSD in the laptop- and it is obviously already booting from the SSD, so it must have already been cloned. My question is- when you FIRST cloned your old drive to your new SSD- was your old drive still in the laptop, and the SSD was on the outside, hooked up via USB? I have heard cloned laptop drives wont boot unless they are *inside the laptop during the cloning process*.. but if you need to set it up that way, how do you get your laptop to run if its original drive has been removed?

@RealDude
@RealDude 5 лет назад
The purpose of cloning is to duplicate your old hard drive onto a new hard drive. Don't format your old hard drive first. You may want to run CHKDSK C:/f on your old drive before starting the process, just to make sure the sector allocation table accurately reflects where the files are located. See the RU-vid video called "How to recover with Acronis Universal Restore" if restoring to a new computer with different hardware before starting the process, because it is a more involved procedure than plugging a cloned hard drive into the same computer as a replacement for the old hard drive.

Hi Tech Steve. I have a quick question. I have an older Gateway laptop that i put a SSD in a year or so ago. I cloned the original drive from it to the SSD. Works GREAT. This computer is having internet problems where it is very slow. I want to take the SSD and put it into a newer Dell laptop and have everything the same on it as with the other one. Can I just take the clone drive and put it into the Dell and have it work, or will i have to take another route?
@TechSteve
@TechSteve 7 лет назад
+Tony Godsey you can but your software will see new hardware then you can have issues with windows keys and licenses on installed software. Plus you will have to update all the drivers for video card, etc.

ok this is good now i have one mac with a 480GB SSD ( which is not full and i can swap to and windows 10 machine with 240GB SSD, i now want to swap the drives as windows machine is now main. I have an external drive. where i can dump the image now question is what software would be best to do this job and should I do this on mac or on windows?
@TechSteve
@TechSteve 7 лет назад
+Mansoor Mughal if I understood correctly you want to put the 480SSD in the windows machine. First you can use the time capsule software to back up the Mac on to an external HDD. Then I would use the Acronis true image to clone your PC by using methods on video to move your data to the 480SSD, you can then install the the 240SSD back into the mac and format in the recovery and install iOS, when back up and running you can restore from time capsule backup. Make sure you test that everything is working before you format anything.
@mmughal

perfect.. i am going to do that and confirm

Hi Steve. I recently had one of my laptops fail at a motherboard level. The 256 GB and 1 TB SSD's were ok. I have since purchased a WD Red 8 TB and partitioned it into four 1.25 TB partitions intending to "clone" my remaining 2 desktops and the other laptop with Acronis. My question, which I am afraid is "mute", is can I clone into a partition and get all the computers onto one drive. If not I will take older, smaller hard drives that are in storage and copy all the data onto to the 8 TB drive, reformat the smaller drives and use them one for each computer. Hopefully to remember to copy and rewrite the cloned drives every couple of three years to avoid data fade. I do make very frequent data backups on all computers onto a NAS but not the operating system. Calling and re-purchasing third party programs is expensive for one failure and very time consuming! Gotta be a better / faster way. Thank you!
@TechSteve
@TechSteve 6 лет назад
To answer your question. You can’t clone a partition. Source: kb.acronis.com/content/56634
@g.johnson930
@g.johnson930 6 лет назад
Thank you for the lighting response. Perhaps I worded my question incorrectly. The disk(s) I would like to clone are the system hard drives of my running computers into a 8 TB Red drive that I have partitioned to accept the OS and data, at that time, for each computer. Then if there is another hardware failure, I would copy the cloned, hopefully, partition from the 8 TB drive and any data that had been added since the original OS clone. Hopefully I have framed my question in an understandable form this tine. THANKs
@TechSteve

I would probably use a back up drive if I’m understanding correctly.

So I have an old 2 TB hard drive and I have a new 2 TB hard drive. I want to clone the old one to the new one. After I connect the new hard drive to my computer and I am running my operating system from the old one, do I clone the old disk to the new one while I am still using it? Or do I have to go on a third disk and copy the old one to the new one while the old one is not in use? My question is can I clone the old disk to the new one while I am still on the old disk running my operating system and cloning software? Or will it not work because the disk is in use and being edited?
@TechSteve
@TechSteve 7 лет назад
Install the software on the current system then chose the source disk as the current C drive and choose your new drive as destination disk to transfer all the files to. Also here's part 2 of this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CBgHmnH5nk4.html
@IntelligentReality
@IntelligentReality 7 лет назад
So I am supposed to clone my current C drive while I am on the operating system and using the disk? Also, when you clone a drive, is it an exact copy of the drive? Like if I go on the newly cloned drive will it has the exact same operating system, user files, documents, downloads, applications, files, music etc. with their exact same sizes, file contents, created/modified datetime, etc?
@TechSteve

Thank you for the easy to understand video. I want to clarify a detail related to source and destination drive - when I watched a video on the Acronis website, they said that the new target ssd should be installed in the computer you want it in and the source drive should be connected by USB in order to clone, otherwise the new drive won't boot. Your way seems easier to me because I wouldn't have to change the boot sequence. I'm worried about the "not booting" even though I made an entire pc image file through Seagate Wizard. Also, does Acronis True Image 2016 align the drives so that I do not have to worry about a decline in performance on the SSD? I want to clone my Windows 7 64 bit 300 GB hard drive to a 240 GB SSD. I have used CCleaner and Defraggler as well as removed all videos, pictures, and my documents. Your answers will be much appreciated. Thank you.

+Michelle Ritts that may not work correctly. You might want to go to storage and then clean out all the temporary files and all the old windows backups and windows update files. You might want to backup certain data like tax records, Photos and everything in your documents folder. Helps to back up those items anyway. Never know when a drive will fail or your computer will be struck with a power surge or something like that. Even your house could burn down.
@ryanjohnlynchrealestatelis2927
I have a quick question, if you don't mind. Still kind of new to all this, but would like to update my computer and make it faster. So, I recently purchased an HP Envy x360 i5 w/ 1TB 5400rpm HD and purchased a Sandisk Plus 120gb SSD. I wanted to know if there will be any problems from start to finish coming from the 1TB to the smaller 128g SSD? Some people have said that I'll only be able to go up in size, or I'll need to resize the file in order for it to fit to a smaller HD. This laptop is a week old with nothing on it. And, nothing on the SSD as well. I was also curious to know if I would need to fully reinstall windows 10 on my computer IF I used this program or another, like Macrium Reflect (free version)? I'd rather do clone process externally with a SATA adapter, then just install the SSD as the final step without any harm done. I'm not too computer savv, so I'm reaching out.

With a 128GB drive make sure you're not going to add a bunch of software or media because it will fill up fast. Hope this helps

@TechSteve

+Ryan John Lynch - South Florida Realtor if you clone it will have what ever software that's currently on the computer. Then you can update to win 10 if it's not on there now. Or update before cloning

Hey TechSteve! I have a Seagate 1tb hard drive I took out of my Dell Inspiron One 2020 All-in-one desktop and put it in my Dell Dimension E510 and it doesn't boot for some reason. The hard drive is set to boot first in the boot sequence in the BIOS and Windows 8 is preinstalled on the hard drive. Do you think you can help? Thanks in advance!

+Dennis Williams try to press F12 when your computer turns on and select the hdd that you installed and see if it boots from there. If it works go back into bios and select the correct hhd to boot up from.

Hi Steve. Can I clone to an external usb drive and transfer to another laptop at a later date. I was looking at Macrium reflect but no one seems to have vids showing how to do that. I have to return my screen broken laptop to the insurers before I can get a voucher to buy a new one. I can buy a new HD to clone to if there is some standard in modern UK laptops around the £350 range.
@TechSteve

+BeachesInCornwall I recommend getting an external hard drive. I haven't used a USB thumb drive. Or use the built in backup/ restore software on your computer

The TB to the SSD but make sure it has enough room. I my case I was only using around 100 GB so the SSD was large enough

You can try to use an USB adapter and a hard drive power supply. If you plug into another computer you should be able to see your old files and drag them to your new computer but for programs that doesn’t normally work because of the file structure and registry.

Please help me solve this problem as it is giving me headaches. Using AOMEI I have created 2 clone partitions with Win 7 OS-one on the J partition and other on the expansion drive. Both were created successfully; now the problem is I can't boot from either. They don't show in the Boot menu of System configuration. Also, I don't see them in the boot menu at boot time. I am still only seeing the previous boot partitions and not the new Clone partitions-either of them. Feel helpless. I have tried BCDEDIT also; even that doesn't display the cloned drives. What should I do? Anyone on this forum who sees this message is requested to help. Thanks

hello sir steve, i need some advice my sony vaio Z series (wins 7/128 SSD/i5) was broken 4 months ago now after shipfting to win 10 and upgrading & installing drivers and softwares. in some reason :operating system not found: is keeps going on over and over and cannot open the windows anymore. bringed it to PC shop, they said my pc needs a data recovery which is so expensive 200$ or more. 1 week ago i purchased a junk pc in auction store with same model and system very functioning (bought only 50$)i want to know if it possible to clone the data drive of junk pc and then transfer it/ installed it to my old pc. i bought already a new SSD w/ cable usb connector.what is the very first step to do. i want my old pc brings back to life

When the files are corrupted there’s not much you can do, even if you recover theres still glitches. I can’t give you a good out come but i would make sure you add an external backup moving forward so this doesn’t happen to you again.

I bought Acronis True Image 2010 from an E-bay seller. It would not load. Total waste of $50. I Acronis and found my edition is no longer supported. If you want to copy files from a removed Sata harddrive, you only need a USB to Sata drive cable that can be bought for a few dollars on E-bay. With Windows 10 you download another copy if you have to replace the harddrive.
