The Adafruit Joy Bonnet is a tiny add-on for the Raspberry Pi Z that features a 2-axis joystick and 8 buttons. It's great for making retropie projects. In this tutorial, we'll learn how to use the Othermill Pro to mill a case out of wood.
Check out our written guide for full documentation.

I can see it being a little unstable as its just the pins holding it together, however if I was asked if you should change it or not I would say no because I'm 100% satisfied with how it just fits together with no screws showing and looks amazing I know I said I can see it being unstable, but I bet it's a lot more stable than I think

You could've made some grooves for the buttons so they wouldn't rotate. That would prevent the grain from getting all wrong directiony.

Great info! Would like to know more about the removal of the base material in a single direction. How exactly were you able to eliminate the wood flaps? By the way, the "l" in "solder" is silent, like sawder.

+matt newman Thanks! Mostly sanding removes any access, but later I got a tip from a friend who suggested using a spiral downcut endmill for making clean cuts with no burrs. Also, I like using the European pronunciation of SoLder 😉 - Noè

@SirSethery
@SirSethery 6 лет назад
Pretty cool project, but the inclusion of a joystick instead of a D-pad is annoying for many retro games (it can't handle systems that need a joystick anyways) and the lack of shoulder buttons really hurts the functionality for SNES games. (Though that's more Adafruit's fault than yours). Ideally you'd have a D-pad, shoulder buttons, and maybe an extra button for RetroPi functions (quit game, save state, etc.)

Why don't you solder the header upside down, and trim from the bottom-side instead? This would give you nicely beveled tips on the business-end of the headers, instead of jaggies from a wire-cutter.
@adafruit
@adafruit 7 лет назад
I've actually tried this on a previous project. That works but I found it a bit harder to solder this way. I think it was because one of the ends on the headers are flush and doesn't provide proper heat dissipation, so the solder didn't want to "soak" onto the pins. If you look at both ends of the plastic piece that holds the pins, one has a little groove and the other is flush. When I first did this I remember thinking, "we'll that was a bad idea" ;-) -Noe
@AdityaMehendale
@AdityaMehendale 7 лет назад
Interesting. I first thought your reason might be gold-plating or tin-plating on either side. Your headers in the video look as if they have gold on both ends.. I'll have to try your "bad-idea" scenario sometime. My workplace has high-power Weller soldering stations with short & stubby tips - this might be why I haven't had this issue before. I'll give it a shot with a "regular" soldering-iron next time ;) BTW - (you prolly know this already but) it is possible to push each individual pin through the plastic to adjust its free-length, especially if the pin is warm. A perfboard can be used to push the plastic bits (with the pins against a hard surface) all at once. This might be more work than cutting, but will give prettier results, for sure :)
