How to Coat a Screen Frame or Coating Screens 101A!

These are the tools you need to simplify the Screen Coating process.
1 - Screen Printing Frame
2- RhinoSol 500 Dual Cure Emulsion + Sensitizer
Add sensitizer to emulsion and then let stand so bubbles will disappear.
3 - Scoop Coater that has a rounded and sharp side and an angle piece that enables you to tip and rock and shear in one smooth motion.
I want to point out that, generally, you’ll be working with this in a light safe environment. For demo purposes, I’m going to work a bit quickly and then move to a dark light area for screen drying.
To begin, pour emulsion into scoop coater without over-filling and then begin to coat the non-squeegee side of the screen frame.
The reason that it’s important to start on the non-squeegee side of the frame is because you want to have the build-up on the bottom or non-squeegee side of the frame.
Move scoop coater straight up the frame and then shear off at the top. REPEAT.
Next, turn screen around and coat the squeegee side. REPEAT.
Place frame in a horizontal position in a light safe drying rack to dry.
Once dry, the next phase will be to expose the screen.
Really appreciate you watching our demo. If you need more info and have questions, please contact us at 651-686-5027 x 4, info@rhinotechinc.com. We look forward to working with you.

To Lester Jeffries who had a question about reclaiming a screen after the emulsion was left on the screen for a year. Yes, you should be able to remove the emulsion with a remover like ours that is ER8500L(rhinotechinc.com/product/er-8550l-emulsion-remover-ready-to-use/) that is ready-to-use. Spray it onto both sides of the screen. Using a brush, scrub the entire surface of both sides of the screen. Leave on a few minutes and watch the emulsion start to dissolve. With a pressure washer like the RS1500A (rhinotechinc.com/product/rhinospray-rs1500a-high-pressure-screen-cleaner/), blast off the softened emulsion from the screen. If you still seem some residue, use HR2800 (rhinotechinc.com/product/hr-2800-haze-remover/) haze remover to get a clear screen. Please give us a call at 651-686-5027 x 2 or 4 if we can help you further. Thanks for getting in touch with RhinoTech.

Awsome job. What emulsion would you recommend a newbie? Is cheaper bad? I'll be working with plastisol. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for getting in touch. We recommend RhinoSol 500 Dual Cure Emulsion: rhinotechinc.com/product/rhinosol-500-dual-cure-emulsion/. It's an inexpensive and highly versatile stencil, so this is your best bet. You've already watched the technique, so once you get it down, you're all set. If you have any more questions or need advice, please call Greg at 651-686-5027 x 2. If your order is $100 or more on supplies, you get free shipping in the contiguous U.S.A. Stay safe!

scoop coater is necessary? Could I use DIY materials such as a ruler to spread emulsion?
@Rhinotechinc
@Rhinotechinc 5 лет назад
Sure, you could always lay a bead of emulsion on the screen and use a flat surface like a ruler to spread it, but, in the long term, the proper tool for the job is a good investment. It’ll make your screen printing life a lot easier and a lot less messier. Here's the link: rhinotechinc.com/screen-printing-stencils/Scoop-Coater. You can always contact Greg directly at 651-686-5027 x 2 for more tips. Thanks for your question and for watching our videos.

How Much Emulsion Will Be Required For A3/A4 Size Screen In Mili Liters, For A Single Coat On Both The Sides ?
@Rhinotechinc
@Rhinotechinc 6 лет назад
Thanks for your question. The answer is that for an A/3/A4 screen, the amount of emulsion used will depend on 1) mesh count and viscosity of emulsion, 2) type of scoop coater used, 3) whether you use round or sharp edge ...will all determine the lay down of emulsion on the screen. The last factor will be the skill of the person coating the screen. Our best suggestion is to test with emulsion and frames that you have to determine the specific amount in milliliters that will be required for single coats on both sides. Again, we appreciate your interest in our videos and products. Please call Greg directly at 651-686-5027 x 2 if he can help you further. We look forward to working with you.

How do you coat a 110 screen? I keep getting small holes
@Rhinotechinc
@Rhinotechinc 4 года назад
Thanks for contacting us. One of the first things that's required is to start with is a clean, degreased 110 screen. We recommend DG2200 degreaser: rhinotechinc.com/product/dgg2-2200-rhinoclean-green2-degreaser/. By degreasing, all dust and grime will have been removed from the screen. From there, coat your screen on the bottom side, twice. Rotate to the squeegee side and apply 2 coatings of the emulsion (rhinotechinc.com/product/rhinosol-500-dual-cure-emulsion/). Dry the screen in a safe light, dust free environment like a screen drying cabinet (rhinotechinc.com/product/screen-drying-cabinet/). And, that should eliminate the problem. Another tip. When you expose the screen, make sure that here’s no dust on exposure unit or on the film positive material. If you still have problems or need more info, please call Greg at 651-686-5027 x 2. Hope this helps. Good luck.

How about using squeegee to apply emulsion ?
@Rhinotechinc
@Rhinotechinc 6 лет назад
Using a scoop coater reduces waste and messiness, but, yes, you could use a squeegee. Check out these scoop coaters that are economical all the way around: rhinotechinc.com/screen-printing-stencils/Scoop-Coater. Thanks for your question.

Using a squeegee to apply emulsion is the biggest pain in the ass just cop a scoop coater it’s well worth it

If the design only takes up half screen, do you need a full screen of emulsion.

do you have to do this in the dark?
@Rhinotechinc
@Rhinotechinc 5 лет назад
Great question. You don't have to coat in the dark; just be sure that the light is subdued. The coated screen, however, should be placed in a dark area to dry. A Drying Cabinet or other hard surface located in a dark area would work (rhinotechinc.com/screen-printing-equipment/drying-cabinets). If you need supplies and more tips, please call our Customer Service rep at 651-686-5027 x 4. We're happy to help you. Thanks for watching our video and getting in touch.

I have a really, really dumb question. Really dumb. What will happen if I don't mix water with the diazo and put the powder into the emulsion?
@Rhinotechinc
@Rhinotechinc 7 лет назад
No dumb questions! We're glad you asked. If you don't mix the diazo w/water, it'll be extremely difficult to mix the powder into the emulsion. And, then you won't get consistent exposure, which is what you do want instead of an improper stencil. Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any other questions. 651-686-5027 x 4.

Hello, Do you have to use distilled water? or can you use tap?
@Rhinotechinc
@Rhinotechinc 7 лет назад
Thanks for your question, but no water needed for a screen coating process. Prior to coating, though, just make sure your screen is washed (regular tap water w/DG2200 degreaser is ok and then dried). Appreciate you watching our videos and liking our products.

RhinoTech do you know when if I can use tap water when I add the mix to the emulsion? thank you :) I got screening printing set now and was about to do the emulsion but then it said something about distill water so been looking for information on it all day. Can't get it anywhere. thank you for the time :)
@Rhinotechinc
@Rhinotechinc 7 лет назад
Fill the small sensitizer bottle up with regular tap water and shake, thoroughly. Then, pour sensitizer into Emulsion container and mix, thoroughly. Place in a safe light area such as a closet or dark room. Let this sit until bubbles from mixing raise to surface. Now, you're ready to coat the screen. Hope this helps. Thanks for connecting.
