I wanted to share with you a process that use from time to time for quickly screen printing without using photo emulsion.
This process requires you to have a vinyl plotter (or getting cut vinyl made from a sign shop). Instead of using photo emulsion and burning a screen. The vinyl acts as the mask for printing.
It is a quick and dirty way to print blocky graphics without a lot of fine detail.
If enough people like the print, I'll do a run of them in better quality and offer a few up for giveaway.

If the screen is pre-made (store bought) would you just put the design under it?

Very nice video. Don't be intimidated by emulsion. It's actually easy to use and it performs much better. Amazing job for going freehand. Very cool. It looks like you could use 20x24 screens and a very small exposure unit. And actually if you are set up with your ducks in a row, you can make a screen and setup and print much faster than this with film positives and photo emulsion. I have screens ready to expose at any moment. It's called preparation ;) Print film and bam! Expose. Done and go to press. Of course a press helps too. Come get some Catspit~!

I normally use the photo emulsion process and I'm very familiar with it. This process is meant more for a one off or to show people an alternative if they cant use emulsion.

@@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266 I can see how this method would help test different color combinations, etc. before investing more time and effort and money into a process that would enable the precision that yields better results. Definitely has a place in the toolbox.

Can't believe I actually rather go with the harder method..... if you gonna do all that work might as well do a proper job... js But it's great for post cards and little craft stuff... I'll do this with my children for camp next year tho

Yeah, it kind of depends on what materials you have on hand too. Not everyone is going to be able to burn screens.
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
Ever wanted to screen print, but didn't want to mess around with harsh, specialized chemicals? Give this tutorial a go! Everything you need can be purchased at a fabric/craft store.
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
I didn't forget about you, don't worry. I bought some sheet steel and was thinking about making a real tiny wheel barrow rather than just 3d printing one.

You should sell these prints in your Etsy store. I'd buy one and ask you to sign it.
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
+Classic Gaming Quarterly I think I'm going to do that. As soon as I find some free time.

Next time flip your design before you cut it and then tape it onto the back of the screen instead of the well side. That way your squeegee can have a smooth surface to print on.
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
+Chelsey Kilgore that is a good tip. I was worried doing it that way would cause the screen to not lay flush to the surface being printed on.
@chelseymakes
@chelseymakes 7 лет назад
Let's Make Something Awesome Together if you have adequate and equal pressure on your squeegee, it should be fine. The vinyl isn't too thick that it would affect it. I print with plastic stencils taped to the back of my screen pretty often and I've never had a problem with it. I just ordered more vinyl to try this out so I'll let you know how it goes.

Chelsey Kilgore what do you use to adhere your stencils to your screen? I just tried my first print today and i think i sprayed too much tack on my stencil because now it won’t wash out of my screen lol
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
I use adhesive vinyl. If you use spray adhesive it will definitely fill in the mesh on the screen.

I like the look of this method.Looks vintage and organic.Tired of perfect.
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
Using organza instead to screen printing mesh really makes it gritty. Much better than trying to digitally distress it. You can still get near perfect prints with this method by using good mesh.

Very cool! I love timesavers like this, plus the 'dirty' look gives it character... now I just need to create a plotter modification for my 3D printer :P

Great video! May I ask if there is a special type of vinyl sheet you used for this or just any adhesive backed vinyl sheet? Thanks!
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
Nope, any vinyl should do.

Could you provide links to the vinyl plotter you own/use and the cheap screen material. Thanks!
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
I use an older model KNK Zing that is no longer in production. They've added a new model, knkusa.com/zing-orbit/ This process will work with any vinyl plotter (silhouette cameo and cricut are on the consumer side, or you could step up to a USCutter or Roland for a more professional cutter). The mesh I use can be purchased at any fabric store, this is similar to what I use, www.joann.com/casa-collection-organza-many-colors/zprd_08561581a.html If you want better quality prints or a screen that will hold up longer, I'd recommend actually buying screen printing mesh like this, www.screenprinting.com/saati-hitex-158-white-screen-mesh-55x1yd, I just like using the cheap stuff because I can usually find it for $2/yd vs $15+/yd for the real deal.

I just learning about screen printing and vinyl cutting. Which would be cheaper to produce, what you did in this video or cutting out a vinyl sticker of the same graphic? Thanks.
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
If you need to only make one or two, just making it a vinyl sticker would be cheaper and easier. If you wanted several, screenprinting would be the way to go.

do you have any of your thumbs up for safety posters for sale? A tee shirt would be cool too...

I gave away the few prints that I made. I could always remake them if people want to purchase some, or I can put the design up for sale on t-shirts as well.

I want to make my own screens but what material is used for the mesh?
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
I just use tulle fabric that you can purchase by the yard at a fabric store. It can usually be picked up for a couple bucks per yard. Results are inconsistent with this fabric, but it is cheap. If you want to do it properly, use screen printing mesh. But that is usually around the $20-$30 per yard range. Or you can buy premade screens with mesh on them.

I'd love to know how long the screen lasts after you wash it a few times. Does the vinyl stay on?
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
Kind of depends how rough you are with squeegeing and washing it out. It definitely starts degrading after the first wash or two. But, I also don't use real screenprinting mesh, so it tends to lose its stretch more after washing. I wouldn't replace the traditional method with this, and use vinyl for just a quick run. You can also put the vinyl on and coat the screen with emulsion/screen filler then pull the vinyl off once it cures. This would be a more durable option.

Let's Make Something Awesome Together oh yeah that makes sense. I think I will have to give it a shot. Great channel by the way. I've been watching all your videos the last couple days.

Let's Make Something Awesome Together HOW WOULD YOU COAT the screen with emulsion using the vinyl?
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
+303AdrianArian put the vinyl on the screen, then brush a coat of emulsion on. Once it has dried, peel the vinyl off. Although using emulsion like that would be wasteful. Laura Kampf recently did a video of the same process, but used wood glue instead of emulsion.
@303adrianarian9
@303adrianarian9 7 лет назад
What is best way to clean the screen when done to not damage the vinyl for reuse?
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
+303AdrianArian being very careful with how you remove the vinyl. Alcohol might dissolve the adhesive also. I use really cheap fabric (a buck or two a yard) from the craft store, so I'm not too worried about reclaiming that mesh.
@303adrianarian9

Let's Make Something Awesome Together I have a logo for our baseball team. After doing a set of shirts I will be doing some more 5 days later. Should I rinse out the screen with water? I am using 110 mesh screen.
@letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
+303AdrianArian yes or the ink will dry on the screen. Just be gentle with the water or it will peel off the vinyl
