I love how you give all sorts of extremely helpful advices that I would have never thought of. Like what you said about not drawing every single hair? I used to do exactly that but now I get what to do thanks to you which saved me a lot of time and effort!!
These are absolutely fantastic tutorials. I love that you keep the whole color palette on the side and explain how your using them step by step. You have also explained that hair line technique which I've only seen done in time lapses. Your layering video was also very helpful and comprehensive. Thank you, you're a great teacher.
Your voice is so very relaxing. I've caught myself closing my eyes and just listening to your voice. I then startle myself and have to rewind it so I could watch your artwork just come to life. You explained everything so beautifully, and I thank you. I hope to put your wisdom to good use and work on skin tones in the next week or so.
Wonderful instruction and narration, beautiful work. i really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I also appreciate your professional manner of presentation.
Wow this is one of the best portrait Colored pencil tutorials I've ever seen. I am worse than terrible at portraiture, but I think I will try again now that I've found this amazingly comprehensive and informative tutorial. Absolutely fantastic thank you so much.
Also, your narration is just perfect with a clear voice with no heavy accent because in many narration videos I either have to concentrate a lot in hearing or rewinding because English is my second language
This tutorial is such a pleasure in every way! The gorgeous music you chose is one of my favorite aspects. And your steady voice, the beautiful image and your excellent explanations make it a real treat and a great asset. I hope to be able to draw as well as you one day. Thank you so much for sharing your gift!
veeeeery interesting, quite the challenging border and it looks great. I definitely learned quite a bit from this tutorial. Your voice is relaxing! You've done a great job and thanks for sharing.
I was always afraid to do portraits because you have to add so much to it and this made me actually want to try doing it thanks for making these videos they are helping me a ton !
This is amazing. I wish I could draw like that in order to color it in. I love your calm voice. I love the fact that you bother speaking at all. I've seen too many videos in which the person doesn't bother speaking. Love your technique. It's gorgeous. I don't have those pencils but I hope to be able to recreate the look with the ones I have.
I forgot to thank you for having the pencil numbers sit on the screen for a while so we can write them down: if not it would be difficult for us to try to understand the content of the tutorial and remember the color numbers. You are very smart and talented. Thanks.
You are amazing! An excellent tutor, love your voice over sharing each step, almost each stroke...its wonderful to be able to follow along. This is beautiful. Are you drawing this from a live siting? Or from a photo? Or from memory? tyfs
At age 79, yes, &79(!!!!!!!!!!), as I prepare to engage some local art classes with the goal of maybe capturing my grand children in my hand, I luckily, no, make that blessedly, stumbled upon this brilliant, articulate, details laden, demonstration that casually mentioned every query concern that I have. I think this is one of the most succinct and impressive art video / discussion I have ever seen - even imagined. I wish more than the best for the brilliant demonstrator? instructor?
Thank you for sharing the knowledge. You have no idea how much this has helped me. I do portraits in graphite and for me it has been somewhat difficult to use color pencils. You are a good teacher. I have a better understanding now. Thank you, again.
Thank you very much for a well organized presentation. Although I am a non-speaker of English, it's a miracle that I didn't miss any word thanks to your diction and speed of your speech. Do you do this kind of presentation often for the public - I mean not for your Patreon audience? Thank you for not presenting a time-lapse show, something that makes me feel like pulling my hair out. I agree that it's better with no music. But still it's a excellent presentation. Thank you.
Wow! What a wonderfully rendered portrait using what I, and many colored pencil artists, think to be the worlds best colored pencils in Luminance by Caran D'ache. But for the worlds best pencils to work the way they should, they need an amazing artist such as yourself. It was a wonderful time watching and listening to your process. Such beautiful work and love the traditional Chinese signature style that u use for your signature. Keep up the great work and love listening to your videos. Lastly, You do a very good voice over in explaining your process. :)
I'm afraid that without the music I would have fallen asleep. Your voice is very soothing. There was one moment that the music didn't go well with the subject, but for the most part, I thought it was helpful. I have that problem with a few other artists long tutorials on youtube when there isn't anything to help me stay engaged. For me, this video was very nice to watch.
He has such good looking hands - what? Also, his drawing style is similar to mine (just a lot better obviously), and I appreciate this tutorial, I can learn a lot by watching this. He's so detailed 👏
Great video! Thank you so much for the amount of information you've put into this, I've just bought some of these pencils and im totally clueless! The chapter marks are super helpful to navigate too.
I really liked this tutorial. very informative, and well done! I've mainly done portraits in graphite, but want to try colored pencils. This gave me a lot of good info.
Thanks so much for sharing this video, I learned so much just from watching you and listening to your explanations of your technique. I can really see where I can change what I'm doing to get the results that I didn't know how to get before. Thank you! Really beautiful work
Excellent tutorial. You are an very talented artist and I really enjoyed watching you work. I'm just starting out with colored pencils and am trying to figure out which ones to purchase as they are quite expensive. I. have to tell you that most videos people ramble on and on and are really irritating but your voice and instructions are very soothing and insightful!!!
Thank you very much I really appreciate it. If you are just starting out I recommend 72 pack of Prismacolor Premier, or you could get the full 150 pack instead because it not much more.
A very good tutorial on using colored pencil on this portrait. The colored pencils that you are using are they wax based or oil based? I have use Prismacolor made by Berol in the 1980's and early 1990's before blenders. The new Prismacolor made by Sanford are not the same quality and I am looking into using another brand. My Mule Deer buck avatar was done in Prismacolor in the early 1990's on archival illustration board. Thanks again for a wonderful video. I did not have such luxury as the internet for sources and education when I was illustration 30 years ago. Keep up the excellent work.
I ruined so many portraits with paint thinner on skin tones, I'm so glad I found this video, it all makes sense now, Thank You!! I subscribed super fast :D I'm not used to using the colorless blender, do you press hard with it? Seems like it takes really lots of layers before it can blend... I'll keep practicing :)
Thanks so much, I am glad it was helpful. With the colorless blender I press quite firmly but not too hard. For the skin it does takes about four layers but I worked a little slower in this video. It's not really that it takes "lots of layer" before blending it's that you want to layer and blend simultaneously.
maybe I can make nice portrait of I use that kind of pencil color,,,as of now I'm using Faber castell classic color and I admit it's so hard to blend colors I ruined so many portrait because of ugly shading,it 's so hard to draw accurate drawing then it and up so miserable when coloring,,,if only I can buy that kind of color pencils but the problem is it's so expensive 😢😢😢😢
Wow, great tutorial and finished piece! And it's a very cool effect you got with that negative space border! I love how you explain your technique and thought process on every aspect of the piece. I'm getting ready to experiment with mixed media, using watercolor, ink and colored pencils, and this has giving me some insight on how to do the colored pencil portion. Oh, going a little off topic here, but your review of the Ugee 2150 pen monitor is what helped make me decide to get one! Have really enjoyed it for the past 7 months I've had it! So thank you for all the insightful videos you've shared on here! They really do help us struggling artist get a clearer grasp on areas we need to improve on imop :-)
You are amazing this is a beautiful portrait❤I'm going to be studying your work on how to color pencils I'm a new subscriber❤taker care & Thank you for sharing!!!!
Thank you for such an informative, calm and peace filled delivery on such a difficult topic where you have amazing skill.. I've never had the courage to do portraits. I might try it now thanks to this wonderful tutorial. May I ask which colour Stonehenge Vellum you prefer to use for portraits. I see there are so many colours to choose from. Thank you again for sharing from the heart your skill and knowledge.
I'm truely grateful for your support, i'm glad you found this tutorial helpful. In the near future I will be doing a livestream of a portrait from beginning to end.
Yes!! PLEASE do that!! I feel that 1 real-time tutorial is worth a billion speed-drawings! And I've been using Luminance pencils since discovering Emmy Kalia's tutorials on RU-vid. Check her out! See you on Patreon :)
I have to say, this is, by far, the best colored pencil portrait tutorial I've found on RU-vid. You explain what you're doing and why extremely well. One question, what is the black and white tool you're using? I didn't quite catch the name.
Glad you figured it out. Thank you for the lovely compliment i really appreciate it. I'm planning on doing an advanced skin tone tutorial later this month also. :)
I was wondering if someone could make a video explaining how to draw portrait with only faber castel polychromos! I love your channel and this tutorial! Love you!
I would not recommend exclusively using polychromos. But you can order Luminance pencils individually, The absolute must have Luminance pencils for portraits are: 832, 872, 842, 862, 836 and 876. Those 6 colors do not exist in polychromos at all, I would also get the luminance 801 and colorless blender.
Hi, you may not see this since this video in old, and it is a great tutorial. The problem I have is that I don't use the same brand of pencils that you did. So it is hard to know what colors your using just by the numbers. Enjoyed you process though.
Hi , l am loving your process , are you using a tortilla for blending ? or is your pencil in a pencil holder ? l wish l was one eighth as good as you are , so beautiful.
When did you really incorporate Burnishing on this portrait, at the 2 layer or at the very last layer? And would you recommend using a colorless blender at ANY point of a piece for burnishing?
Wow you did not only a beautiful portrait but what was so great was how you talked us through it ! One of the best step by steps I have seen . I am obsessed with doing portraits . I have done them in the three mediums I have used and the past year I wanted to go into the CP portraits . I purchased the powder solvent kit to try , but I really like the glossy look of your skin with the burnishing . Sometimes I just want to work with a less messy medium . I started with acrylic to watercolor to pastels and now colored pencils What are your favorite pencils Luminous ? Do you use them only ? My first CP set was like most people Prisma Color full set , then I bought the Faber Castells , my next set I think will be the Luminous full set . I am currently a patron of another artist but I really like your technique so I might join your team . I don,t see your name anywhere here is it meant to be that way ? What should I call you . :D ... I want to thank you so much for sharing your talented techniques so we can learn from you , you're a great teacher . I'll be around for sure ......Ps on being a sponsor in there do you have lots more portrait step by step with narration ( I hope so 😀) Thanks again Brenda
Thank you so much Brenda, you can call me Will. I usually have been using only Luminance pencils, but I have the set of polychromos too. I appreciate you considering joining me on Patreon. Now would be a good time because this friday I'm doing a Patreon live tutorial working on a portrait. I also have a 4 part tutorial available on there right now. You can watch me color a whole portrait from beginning to end with the reference photo and my color palette. Hope to see you over there soon. My favorite medium is Oil paint but I never get a chance to do it. But I mainly work in cp and soft pastels. I also have a 6 hour soft pastel course on my website.
Thanks so much for your reply ..You seem to be such a sweet young man lucky wife :D ...You didn't say which paper you like best for portraits . If you should have a minute take a look at my website so you can see my level of work . I do know I have a long way to go with lots of practice but I never really excepted to get this far . I have sold prints on FAA , paintings on Etsy , and many by commissioned word of mouth so I must not be too bad lol . www.brendamorgado.com/#a/11966/i/182301 My daughter and her little family are making their yearly visit and will be here tonight so I will not be able to do anything for a week and a half ....but I will be back . Evenings I don't sleep well so I maybe looking through what you have on YT till then ...Thanks so much Will and have a wonderful week .Thanks Brenda
This is such a lovely tutorial, I loved watching it and it made me want to try this one. I wondered if there is a reference picture I can get ahold of? Kind regards
Great to have the colors there on the side, but itemized for clarity. "Skin, Lips, ect, love his work I am new at colored pencil: I have worked for 20 years in watercolor. I love him and his work and style.
Here is my technique for choosing my colors: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-882AlmodVNo.html I recommend making a color chart for all of your drawing supplies.
Honestly, I can't say for sure. Are those the only pencils you have. Prismacolors would work better. I have the full set of Polychromos and I only use them in combination with my luminance pencils. But they do work really great for fine details in eyes and hair.
I have to say as an artist myself I have no practice with colored pencils whatsoever but I'm pretty decent with graphite pencils. Should I master my techniques with graphites first also before I use colored pencils should I practice blending my colors on a coloring book or draw small things and try coloring those to get the hang of blending with colors like in this video?Thank you so much for this video and that one beautiful piece of artwork!
Wanna know a secret? I never practice. If I see something I want to draw I just jump in and try my best. I force myself into unfamiliar positions and when the dust settles I just look back at what worked and didn't work and avoid what didn't work the next time I draw something. Get yourself a 72 pack of prismacolor pencils and just jump in and have fun. I have a lot of coloring tutorial on my channel.
Unmask Art that's actually how I go about with my graphite. I go blind eyed, but your suggestion actually sounds decent for the fact that I'll learn more on my own and we'll make my own techniques. Also my parents said they'll buy me some Faber Castell polychromos if I can draw 40 different realistic drawings with my graphite. But I'll take your advice and see what I can pull off. I'll also check out your tutorials.
Unmask Art that sounds like a good idea. honestly too much practice will make you improve a lot but you'll never have a body of work to be proud of if you practice too much. I know from experience. lol😅
Okay, so I just got my colored pencils yesterday, and I'm really not very good with them yet, and I was just wondering how long you've been drawing with the colored pencils?
I've been working with colored pencils for three years now, in fact here is my first time:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7TS-dld-7JE.html It really only take a little practice. Make sure you are using good paper otherwise it will make more work for you. I like Stonehenge Vellum paper or Strathmore Bristol smooth paper.
Awesome work my friend. I don't know if it's an age thing here (74) but I find it really irritating and unnecessary for tutorials and documentaries in general to include background music, when all I want to do is concentrate on the voice over. And your voice, like others who have commented here, is very nice and soothing. Sorry about the negative part here, but music on documentaries is a pet hate of mine. Your voice and art is powerful enough to stand alone..Thanks you very much.
