i colour with gel pens when i do posters. ..i was looking for a video for tips because I'm always looking to make my art better. ...this helped allot i enjoyed it!
+Jennifer Krahmer thanks Jennifer! Since you already work with gel pens, you know how they have wonderful color variety with glitter and gloss, etc. Hope you enjoy gel pens using their smear effect to your advantage!
I love getting away from all the politics and stress of everything and just sit down and draw. This video was awesome too and I may use these in the future!
+The Dee Thank you The Dee!, I apprecate you taking a moment to drop a line. Gel pens are a new tool, sometimes they take getting used to, but once you get the hang of ways to use them, they are fun!
+Beth Atchison Thank you for your kind message. I have received many messages through facebook and other mediums, but you are the first to comment via RU-vid - Thank you!! I so enjoy everything about reaching people, opening their world (eyes, minds and hearts) to seeing the world in new ways through art. Happy day! ~Cher
Thank you for your video. I've learned a lot from you regarding coloring with gel pens, colored pencils and blending with water!! I'm new to coloring books as an elderly woman and am looking forward to using all of the things available to use for coloring, blending methods and tools!!! WHOOOHOO 😀
Hi Cher, this is a great video, i've learn so much from the excellent info you gave well i'm more confident to gave it a try so Thank you so much for these wonderful exemples, tips & tricks! i really enjoyed all of your teaching videos, you are an amazing teacher and Colouring, drawing Artist & more, thank's for sharing your talent & expertise whit your fans!
Opened up a whole new world. I am kinda new stress relief coloring adult. I am in dialysis and found that with needles in one arm and a auto cuff on the other for 4 hours every other day it not only is a de-stresser for me but something beautiful comes out of an otherwise not very pleasant part of my life. (Bare in mind that I am a very avid thread crocheter and can get pretty creative with duct tape but am not able to do either of those and am not good at all at napping, watching TV, much less sitting still). I had only been using gel pens. Thank you for the new and beautiful idea!
+Vicki Braner Whoo hoo, VIcki! I hope this brings more embellished creations to your colorings! If you are intersted in playing with pen and paper and creating your own designs to color, check out my new book! Here's a link to a video to get you started (as an example). Happy day! Enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZBiEx6DZ-Qo.html
Cher, thank you so much for making this great video. I feel like I've just taken an art class. I actually viewed it once before when I was just starting out in my journey with adult coloring books and I think I've gotten quite a bit more out of the video this time, what with being more familiar with some of the terminology.I also watched your video about 12 blending methods and I was blown away. I have tried several of the techniques you discussed but with a kind of hit and miss application. Seeing you demonstrate as you explain has made all the difference in the world. It's late tonight but I can't wait till the morning light to try out what you've taught me. Another art class - two in one night and you can't beat the cost of admission. Thanks so much for freely sharing your talent and your expertise. You're super!
Thanks Madeleine! Appreciate you taking a moment to share! I really enjoy hearing how people like yourself are blossoming with creative inspiration after seeing the videos! Best way to support me is to share these videos with others (and buy my books! :) ) Happy coloring!~
This is a good tutorial video about gel pens. Have you tried blending with glycerin instead of water...or mixed with a bit of water. It doesn't tear the page up like using just water does.
Thank you for sharing, I am new to your channel and am enjoying your tutorials. I am new to colouring and trying to learn some blending techniques but noticing many of the colouring artists are using Prismacolours or pollycromos pencils which I do not have as they are a lil out of my price range at this time but I have been gifted a 36set of Derwent Studio pencils and wondered if your blending techniques both with pencils and with pencils and gel pens would work using the Derwent Studio pencils or does it make a difference using the higher quality pencils? Does it matter if the pencils used are wax based or oil based? Am interested to learn the answers please, and thank you in advance ❤️
Me 2 years ago: Man I wanna color. I'll get these two books. (literally the 2 your hold up) Me a week ago: I've never colored with gel pens. Let's try it out. eeeeehhh.. I don't much like this. Me today: Well it looks like I'll be giving gel pens another shot. Also thank you very much for the coloring books! It really helped me to feel like I accomplished something while I was pregnant with my twins since I couldn't do much else.
So glad to hear it Brianna! I had to giggle, because isn't that exactly how it goes?! We get curious, we get an idea, it might not work out, but then something shows up that inspires us to try it again. Thank you for giving something a try - that shows creativity and a willingness to keep learning! Something I'm sure your twins will benefit from immensely! Happy coloring!
+Laura Murphy happy coloring Laura - have fun exploring - I think you'll find using the colored pencil as a base layer will really open up playing with the gel pens!
I love your videos!!! So informative and easy to follow. I have not been having much luck with my gel pens so, this has helped a lot!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much!
I’m so glad that I did a search for Gesso uses and found you! I never though about using the annoyance of gel pens for an advantage. This opens up a new world of bringing art into my life. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and creativity.
I like the affect you get from the gel pen but I don't like the harsh lines you can get from the gel pens if you don't get them in the right spot with that said how do you get rid of the harsh lines from the gel pen.
+Angela Restad Hi Angela, in my experience, there can be a couple of reasons the hard line shows up and stays. First it can depend on the gel pen and the paper. It can also depend on if you let it dry for a few seconds before moving them around with a brush. Sometimes I can do a correction by working on it a little bit more or I can add a bit more gel to increase the amount that is spread around (this can basically soften the line a bit because you are taking gel pen over the area and blending it a bit).Other times the line shows up (perhaps to a forementioned reason) and I can decide if I'm going to just let it be or maybe add a little pencil after it has dried all the way to soften the edge. It takes a little practice...after a while you'll get to know your pens to the point when you can *feel* it connect to the paper- it's like you'll know if it's going to be a harder line or if it's going to move easily. have fun!
Thank you so much. I've done creative works but never colouring in. Now I have many pencils in various textures and just found gels. You taught me so much 😊 So good for stress relief too.
Yes, and I even did a video for Posh Coloring Book - for an online coloring group they were trying to get going. Have you played with above and below the gel pen application? try it!
+CherTheFire I love this video!!! This was just what I was looking for!!! I have the Write dudes metallic pens and I was hoping I'd see them in your video!! Thanks for the video!!! Can't wait to see more from this channel!
+Elianne Tjam Excellent Elianne! I have a variety of gels, and the Write Dudes were some of my first in my collection. And yes, there are more videos to come!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! I have gel pens, water color pencils, and colored pencils that I very seldom use because I just didn't know how, and now I do! :-) Can water color pencils be used this way instead of regular colored pencils? Another question: what do you do with your completed coloring pages? Frame them, cut them up to use to make cards, etc.?
I enjoyed you video SOOO much, not only am I an artist but I bought my gel pen collection just for writing. I have over 125 of them and had NO idea that I could use them with my prism pencils. I am so excited about that. "Thank You" for such wonderful videos hun!!!!!
Very helpful video. It will definitely help my coloring. One thing that I would like to ask is your recommendation for coloring larger areas like in coloring books with figures with fashions. Do you have any suggestions for coloring these larger areas. Would you use the same type of techniques. I feel I really need help with coloring larger areas. Thanks
+Bonnie Shapiro HI Bonnie, good question. If you are askign specifically with gel pens in mind, I would use colored pencil as a base color and use gel pen to add highlights and definition to the fashion design. If you are interesting in looking for large areas that are similar to backgrounds, you might be interested in exploring this : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z2JcWepKxeM.html. Also I have some short quick videos on topic specific on areas for general coloring. here's the playlist: ru-vid.com/group/PLR3fjYG6-wMCrGxlLnGT2uhIKC87nRlaP As a general answer for large areas you can cover them with any way you use coloring but just taking your time and having some patience. Using a solvent to spread areas of color and blend them together is a nice way to extend your color (both practically in saving your medium and literally as in it spreads color). Check out this video for ideas on blending, but especially the ideas of gamsol in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-luC6GMVBlbw.html. Happy coloring!
+DenofGoods Yay! Always love for people to be creative, if kids can start with trusting their creativity at a young age, they are more likely to continue into adulthood! let the gel pen art begin!
I know this video has been on here a long time lol. But I just watched it and I am floored. It is amazing!!!! I must say that I would have never thought of doing that. Your a wonderful artist and thank you for showing me this way of coloring. And the way you teach is awesome as well. I love coloring with my gel pens and my prisma colors. So I'm super excited to try this out. Thank you again so so much
Thanks Jennifer! I appreciate when people take a moment to let me know they learned something new or were inspired to try something different! There are other videos on my channel if you care to explore other possibilities as well. Enjoy!! Happy coloring!
Hi Cher - do you know or do you have anything that will help smooth the area after coloring with gel pens - I have tried a cirular motion but I still end up with streaks - anything ?? TIA
+Ronna Parchman hmmmm....I assume you are using a lot of gel pens in an area if you are getting streaks (like coloring in an entire area?). My solution would be to use a very small brush (even smaller than in the video) to smooth out the gel while it's wet. It will take some practice and patience, but I bet you could get a smoother look! Try it on a scratch piece of paper first...then graduate to your colored images.
Hello nice video I'm sorry to be a smart-ass but I just have to the easiest way to color with gel pens is to not buy them by a set of prismacolor premieres they're only $95 as of December 30th on Amazon in my opinion thank you for listening
That's funny - I've been told that before (about Bob Ross - who I happen to dig)...Thanks for dropping a line - always love to hear from people from around the world doing their creative thing! Happy coloring!
My first experience was a G2 20 pen set. It's a great set for beginners! The set I'm currently using the 60 set from Arteza. So far I'm really enjoying it!
Thank you so much for your instructions. I have been so afraid to try to do all these things you have talked about. Now I'm not so intimidated. You have such a wonderfully calming voice. I look forward to more learning with you. By the way, you are amazingly talented too.
Hi! I wacht your video. it's great but.... I'd like to make sure I understand what i learn. You mean,,,, i used color pencils first then gel. to protect the color book to get wet through.?
Yes, exactly. Using the color pencil first protects the paper from the wet gel pen, preventing it from soaking in immediately, but it also gives you a surface you can make the gel pen glide easily across.
Thank you for all of your videos! I have viewed enough of them to be able to say with confidence that they are my favorite tutorials! You have helped me to further my enjoyment of coloring. I appreciate your contributions!
I'm so glad to hear it! Thank you for taking a moment to share. The goal is to help others be confident, creative and curious about the tools they have access to! Happy coloring!
Try whatever you have access to at home. I found for me the wax pencils and the oil based will help create the surface necessary to put gel pens on top, but you'll need to see what works best for you!
I'm an artist, and this video was very helpful. I have some Pentel dual Hybrid pens, and I mainly used that dry application for accents and areas I want to draw the eye to (also bullet journalling, those things absolutely rock for accents on lettering). I really need to try some of these techniques for myself: this is a great excuse to dust off my beloved old pencils and give those a shot in combination with those pens. I have a set of Bruynzeel Colour design pencils that I love to death, but I barely use them because my water-based markers got closer to the quality of my digital work (I mainly draw digitally). Happy to get back to them, it's kind of getting back to the roots of my artwork.
I love when artists can bounce between old techniques and current ones out of curiosity or to spark back inspiration. I am just learning digital techniques this year (can you believe that??). All my work has always been straight to paper, the old fashion way. I'm loving learning how to combine my tactile work and digital expressions together!
Dear Cher , every single one of your videos are a delight to watch and a wealth of information. I have learned so much from these videos and thank you for sharing them with your viewers. Dolores
Hi Miss Cher. I began coloring almost a year and have picked up so many valuable tips while enjoying your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I have purchased your 2 books. What part of the planet do you reside? Jim.
Thanks Jim! I have two more books coming out on September 13, 2016 and three more coming out in January 2017 . The full set is a 5 part (pocket) book series, small in size, great for travel and gifts!. I'll be doing a video soon on those. I live in USA, in Texas.
I would really like to know more about the Tech Writer Gel pen that gave you the shine in your first example. I know nothing about adult coloring and have never been an artist, so I have no idea what media I should use. I want to do some hummingbirds, but don't know what to use to add the shimmer that each species has in some of its colors that make them "flash" in the sunlight. I don't think glitter is a look I want, but is there some kind of metallic media that would add the shine to those colors without looking fake or tacky , or some other sort of media to give the look I am trying for while blending in to the picture as a whole and looking natural? Thanks, Dee
I have actually used gel pens for this exact purpose. Look for metallic gel pens to create wonderful colors for hummingbirds. The trick I found was to do a layer of dots and then after it has dried, go back and do another layer, then you'll find the colors move through each other with the light and it will fill in what didn't get covered in the first layer. This can be repeated many times.
+Yvette Williams hmmm...pencils and gel pens are very different tools and mediums. the petrolum product softens the wax making it move more easily. I don't know if you'd get the result your looking for by combining gel pens, which are a wet medium and vaseline. But who knows....try it and report back. Try it both ways and see what happens. The video is is wonderfully informative but have you ever thought about possibly doing as ASMR video. Your voice is very soothing and you would be a great candidate for it.
In the beginning of making videos, I had someone suggest AMSR back then....It's not really my thing. But I appreciate the compliment on the soothing quality of my voice, I get that from time to time. I'm hoping these aspects of the videos help to create a calm creative environment.
Do you have one that is coloring and blending with only gel pens? By the title, I was thinking that's what this video is. However, it's pencils with gel pens. Thanks :)
I do not have a gel pen only video because I have found that gel pens by themselves are used up so quickly, absorb into the paper and smear unless you have some practice. However, gels are fun to use by themselves! I encourage you to experiment with your tools and see what kinds of cool ways they work for you! Layer them, overlap, blend while they are still fluid - those techniques can still work. Just make sure you roll your gel pen on a clean piece of paper if you are blending two together to keep your tip clean.
Once the gel color is dry, is it waterproof? I make paper beads and wanted to use them to decorate them. They have to be dipped in a liquid to harden them. Love your videos. Thanks.
+Judith Conrad I would not consider them waterproof. I imagine if you are dipping into a substance that hardens them, they'll be fine (if they make it past the liquid you are using). I'd say create a test example before you do a whole bunch of beads. I can't see why you couldn't give it a go.
Love gel pens but absolutely cannot stand having to be so ultra careful avoiding the ink smears and/or secondary contact smears they're so inherently (and annoyingly) prone to :(
Well, my friend, there is hope for you here! May you enjoy the on-purpose smear, move them where you want them, option to play, smear when you can, idea within the video!
this helped me so much I love to draw and I hope to be an artist when I grow up. My parents got me gel pens and other art supplies this helped me a lot with my gel pens thx you😆😆😆😆😆😁😁😁
+Nazmin Begum Hi Nazim, I used the brush from my personal stash of brushes that I've had for over 20 years...I have no idea the exact location of purchase, however, it was most likely at an art supply store. You can probably find a similar brush at a place like Hobby Lobby or Michaels or any other craft related supply store (if you are in the USA). Try any brush you can have access to and see if it works! You never know, you might end up with a brush that works really great for your style!
+Michele Johnson-Utter hi Michelle...I have two videos that talk about chalk! Backgrounds video has a lot on chalk ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z2JcWepKxeM.html This one is all chalk ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-462KYBHUvAY.html
Thank you so much for sharing your time and talent with us! You have truly inspired me to bring gel pens in as my color medium for my card making. I am looking forward to implementing these FANTASTIC tips you shared with us! Hugs
My current pen that I like is Pilot G-2 .38 - super thin lines. Funny how we gravitate toward one tool for a while. Have you tried the super awesome Dotspen from Cuttelola? So much fun!!! it's an electronic pen and works similarly to a tattoo pen. Super fun to draw with. Happy creatiing!
the sakura jellyroll pens come in different inks not all for black paper . there are several sets and all are high quality ink better than most gel pens , including metallic, glitter inks
+Puffy Jo absolutely, gel pens can be used for any coloring, but the one i happened to showcase is a neon color that is popular for black or dark papers (but not exclusive to). But yes, different qualities, different pens, different types, different uses. :-)
Hi Bonnie - nope! NOT watercolor pencils. Just regular wax-based pencils. I found that the wax protects the paper and allows the gel pen to glide across the surface nicely. I'm using the paper straight out of my coloring book! :)
awesome video !!! I didn' think that we could use gell pens like this !! but I'm a great beginner !!! could you please tell me how has been first colored your second example, perhaps you said it but as I'm french I don't understand all what you say, excuse me!! friendly béatrice
HI Beatrice. The second example uses colored pencils all over the page instead of staying within the lines of the design. Then I used gel pen on top of the pencil. Free form!
What type brush are you using? My brush seems to be too soft and not blending the ink well. I improvised and used a pointed Q-tip as used for applying eyeshadows. But I'd like to know what type brush you are using. Thank you foe showing me this technique!
+YeshuasBride it's a very old brush....I've had it for many many many years....It's a synthetic brush, it is somewhat soft to the touch, but holds it's shape well. It is not a rough plastic brush, and not so soft that I can't move it with some control. It's only about 1/4" , it is not a large brush. I am sorry I can't give you the manufacture, that rubbed off a long time ago. the trick to belnding is to make sure you have enough gel pen down, enough pencil down to glide on top of (super light layers of pencil don't cover well enough for smooth glide of the gel pen, I found), only the tiniest bit of water and then blot out the extra of the paper will absorb the water before you can move the gel pen around. Try a new brush that is a tad firmer than what you have and see if that helps. q-tips, I'm a little bit hesitant to recommend with this technique because it will absorb A) too much water if you use it wet and B) too much gel will go into the cotton swab before you can move it over the pencil.
+CherTheFire Thanks for these tips! Yes, I bought a small medium firm flat brush which seems to work much better. I also noticed by experimenting that you definitely need a good layer of colored pencil down first. Also, I noted that it had to be a gel prn that is wet enough. Some of my gel pens didn't put down enough ink to spread. A better quality gel pens works much better. It does take some trial and error but it does look nice when you get the technique correctly! Thanks so much for showing us this
+YeshuasBride YAY - good trouble shooting! yes, I found the same...with certain pens I had to lay down more gel and with others they were as smooth as smooth could be. You'll get to the point where you'll know upon first contact what kind of gel pen it is and how it will glide (or not).
+Crafting For Almost Everyone hi Sandy, thanks for asking, in this video blending was done by just adding layers of pencil on top of each other, no special techniques other than showcasing the how the gel pen can glide on top of the pencil in different ways for different results, depending on what you're doing. If you are interested in different blending techniques I suggest checking out this vid : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-luC6GMVBlbw.html
I had already watched the video you reference so I wasn't sure if you combined the gel pen with one of the other techniques you mentioned. I noticed you didn't mention baby oil for blending, I'm pretty new to colored pencils but have seen several people mention baby oil. Can you tell me more about it?
+Crafting For Almost Everyone Sure, thanks for asking...I do NOT recommend baby oil for beginners. It is absolutely a method that can be used and it can be done the same way the vaseline is used by dipping in a VERY small amount on the pencil but I do not recommend it as the first solvent you try...the reason why I don't recommend it for beginners (it's mostly beginners who watch the videos) is because most beginners do not know the power of their own touch, much less the learing curve of "less is more". Baby oil is liquid so it will not take much to create a change of the paper and the pencil. I have seen entire pictures ruined and saturated with baby oil when the person tried to use cotton swabs to move the baby oil. Cotton swabs (qtips) will absorb a LOT of oil (more than you need) and the oil will leave a ring around the area as it absorbs into the paper. AFTER a colorist has been playing with different methods (such as those listed in the 12 blending tips, then absolutely, try other methods, give it a go. But I would suggest it be at a point when the colorist has a bit of experience in learning their own style and how to work with pencils FIRST, then solvents and blending agents.
Thanks so much for getting back to me. I really appreciate your honesty. I really liked your Vaseline technique, and think I could use it with a lot more control. I'm not very good with Qtips and would rather use the Vaseline on the pencil and then wipe it back off. It seemed like you got a lot of pigment off of the pencil using this technique as well. Thanks again for your very informative answers. Sandy
+Crafting For Almost Everyone yes, ma'am, you'll notice the wax "melts" right away so you get rich color and you'll definitely want to rotate your pencil and use very little vaseline while you play with how your pencils respond....I was thinking about what I mentioned about the baby oil...I would recommend that pencil go first then apply the baby oil, not putting the oil in contact with the paper first by dipping in....but play with the vaseline and gamsol and blender pencils first. Have fun!
+Kallie 142 HI Kallie, that's something you can play with since they are both "wet" it would just be moving the gel before it dries...that being said the advantage of the pencil as a base layer is the wax allows a slick, protected surface for the gel to glide across. Wet gel pen by itself will begin to absorb into the paper. I show an example of what it looks like in the video of gel pen by itself - you can see it absorb into the paper quickly. Your best bet it to experiement with and without the pencil and see if it gives you the result you are looking for.
I hope you gave it try on a scratch paper to see what happened! It should have worked for you. The gel pen would slide on top of the polychromos pretty easily. MIght need to let it dry, though!
+marceline dash hi Marceline, if you have viewed my videos, or read any of my books, you'll notice that I encourage people to begin with what they have, don't wait until you have the "fancy" pencils to get started. ANY and EVERY tip can be used with all grades of pencils. They will have their own unique way of working and you can become a master of any medium if you work with it long enough. There are some artists who really dislike ball point pens, and yet if you check out ball point pen artists, there are images that you would swear are photos they are so realistic! You can become a master of your own tools if you spend enough time with them and have the patience to allow your medium to teach you what it can do! Don't wait for a video on crayola to begin doing awesome artwork! Use what you have and play with the pencils - they are valuable tools regardless of cost! Happy coloring!
Hi Cher - great videos, and I find your voice to be most pleasant and enjoyable. My question: When blending gel pens, does it make a difference whether the pens are washable or nonwashable? Thanks, Diana
+Maxie Aunt Hmmm, good question! I don't know actually! The ones I have used are not the washable gel pens. I guess you'd have to experiment to see if you use the "wet method" might move around pretty easily if it's meant to wash off. I hope you report back the difference if you decide to play with them. I say, give it go!
+CherTheFire Great thanks. I take this to mean that I don't have to shop for only one type or the other. A follow up Q: Do you think one brand is better than another? Some of these pen sets are remarkably inexpensive, which is tempting. And my last comment: I just visited your website, and wish I were close enough to come to your classes. Thanks again, Diana
Personally, I say start with you think you are interested in color wise and sets that have the most variety for your money on gel pens. Some are glittery, metallic, neon, pastel, etc. If you live near a Costco, try them first. They had a set of 100 pens for $20, which is an awesome deal! I think the Write Dude ones I got at Staples. I get inexpensive ones to experiement with to see what people have easy access to and sometimes inexpensive are just fine. The one thing I've noticed is that the inexpensive ones, the ink can be used up quickly. There are many many many brands...the best way to get to know what's out there is to start somewhere. Gel pens happens to be one of those places where it doesn't matter quite as much where you start. I hope you report back what you decided to you and how you liked them!
+CherTheFire Cher, thanks for your detailed answer. In the past couple of months (since I discovered coloring for adults), I have purchased lots and lots of pencils, and one set each of markers and gel pens. I was very unhappy with my results with the gel pens and markers, but then I didn't have the tips on how to use them. I'm really quite excited to try the dry and wet blending methods with the gel pens. I may have all the supplies I need to go forward and be pleased with my results, and I'll be happy to report back. Thank you again.
I am not having much luck moving the gel. It seems to be stuck after I put it down and when I pull at it gently with damp brush, it almost brings up the paper. What do you suggest?
+Debbie Cowles you might try putting a "thicker" layer of gel on the paper and move quickly to slide the gel pen. Also, trouble shoot: what kind of paper are you using? thin papers will definately require you to have ample pencil down on the paper first. If you are applying a thin layer of pencil down first then the water is going to absorb quickly into the paper and your brush will begin to tear at the paper. is your brush too rough? perhaps try a different brush. are you making sure to blot out all extra water. It must not have a lot of water or you will make the paper wet rather than simply diluting the gel pen. Try those - good luck!
Hello Cher, Thank you for sharing your bit of knowledge concerning how to blend with gel pens. I have been able to achieve something similar with just colored pencil and Bestine Solvent and Thinner. But it will be interesting to see if I can get any different affects (even if only slight) with the gel pens. The true reason why I am contacting you though is because I noticed a major flaw in your instruction: You neglected to mention what kind of paper you are working on. While I know that you did your demonstrations promoting your coloring book, some of us out here do not know what kind of paper your coloring book uses. Knowing what paper you are using is just as important to know as what kinds of pens and methods you are using. All of your instruction will have a completely different affect for the user depending on what kind of paper is chosen. (For instance, colored pencil does not adhere well to fine tooth or glossy paper. However, markers like Copic do.) So...Did you use standard coloring book paper? Did you use mixed media paper? Did you use card stock? What is the weight and tooth of the paper you have chosen? I can't express how important this is!
Thank you Rachel for your comments. Blenders and thinners can produce similar results, that's what solvents do, make the medium more fluid for movement. I always suggest artists use what they have and learn about the tools in their possession. (is this the only video you've seen of mine?) It's not about matching my exact paper nor my exact pencil nor my exact gel pen. However, Yes!, paper *is* part of the relationship in art. In many of my other videos this is topic of discussion that the relationship between your pen and paper is key, and is even written about in my book Mandalas and More, as well as a video that was released earlier this month on papers...and it is something that the artist learns along the way. while you list it as a "major flaw" in my instruction, (aw, man, how sad), different pieces of information find their way to people when they are ready. The older videos are using the paper from the coloring book and when these were being produced they were about the actual technique. So, the paper, yes, just as much as the tool one is using in their hand the paper also is part of the relationship. This relationship changes as soon as one of those variables shifts. What I use and what you use is probably going to be different, unless you are working in my coloring book, is a general given because coloring books do have quite a variety in textures, thickness and tooth. A main component of my teaching is awareness. Awareness in the way a pen glides, how much pressure is needed for pencil, whether circular motions are appropriate or gentle long strokes work best, and in the awareness is the touch and feel of paper. Just because a gel pen video using coloring book paper from my book isn't listed as a certain pound paper, or from a particular brand doesn't mean that the technique shown is any less valid. So yes, please, create awareness of all your tools, paper included. Get curious. Find out what it does on different kinds of paper! Find out what happens with *your* tools. That is what I suggest people do, start with what they have and go from there. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q2ovHLdp3OI.html here's a video from earlier in Feb 2017 that addresses information on tools, including paper. I agree with all your observations on paper! Glad to hear you are at that level of awareness! Happy coloring!

Yes, same here, or some with very small places that I wasn't sure I wanted to get into. Or some that I wanted to just practice on! Hope you are enjoying coloring with new ideas!
RailiaTheDragonSlayer Good no problem. got 100 plus 100 refills for less than $30 us dollars and came with black and white pens. also buy yourself a cheap small rubber spatula and you can use it to blend the gel pen into other colors like she does here with brush. just learned this recently from a RU-vid video.
a link that takes viewers to the purchase site of the books would be a favorable addition to this tutorial. MUCH appreciated that you kindly shared your knowledge and skills with me. Thank you and be well. Bye now
