I would be curious how this compares to my 60" softbox that I like using for interviews. It's much faster to deploy than your setup shown here, but I imagine you win with the softer light by a bit.

I use the 36" and 60" softbox with grid (to really control spill) all the time. Super fast setup. The thing I will say is that this book light setup is the lighting equivalent of a Matte Box. 😅 Regardless of whether its needed, it is BIG and clients love feeling like their budget was well spent. Even if you could film it all on the new iPhone, the big light modifiers scream professional.
@carlospinto4102

you could also use a fresnel on the 600x, which gets you a substantially more powerful and narrower beam. This reduces the spill because the beam is narrower and maximizes your light output because of the fresnel lens. You'll still get the desired effect of the book light but you're minimizing spill and maximizing output, in case you are fighting light from a window this could come in handy. Very clever set up for a one man operation!

Yeah, that’s a nice one stand rig. You could refine it a little more by using the gobo arm with the light to get it a little further away from the stand with more of a horizontal angle to the ultrabounce. It would be a little softer and more efficient wattage wise with less wasting off toward the top. One thing I noticed, it’s best practice to not place the pin of a idle floppy directly against a wall, especially near a window. If somebody were to trip or lean something up against it, it could puncture the drywall, and in the case of a window, it could shatter the glass. Turn the floppy 90 degrees so the whole edge of the frame is leaning against the wall and the pin is sticking out sideways. .

Just a tip. You may be losing some output by using black cloth on the edges... if you used a thick white bounce material that level would not be absorbed & lost in the material itself. It would continue to bounce & diffuse giving greater efficiency. Just a thought.

You're so clever man. I really appreciate your ingenuity to get something that looks really good with the fewest stands possible. Carrying c-stands is the bane of my existence. Question. I know you said I can get it anywhere, but what do you recommend for that kind of 6x6 tubing? I bought the chimera frame where it's all interconnected but this not much in the real of flexibility like this setup is. Thanks!
@PDMokry
@PDMokry 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for the kind words! Loose cstands are knuckle busters and will ruin your day! I used the tubes from a modern studio split 6x6 frame. But it is just square tube you can get from your local metal supply or hardware store. Thank you for chatting!

Your first issue is you are using 1/4 grid cloth. The density quality is too thin and it also creates a star pattern which can create another issue. You don’t need to “book light” if you just use magic cloth and push the lamp through magic cloth only. Or any other similar dense material.

Another good video - you're cranking 'em out! Our work seems pretty similar (although I don't have a 1 ton truck of resources!). I've always managed with a 42" octa for interview set ups like this but getting the light low and adding an extra bounce has always intrigued me. I'd love to see this compared to a 51"' umbrella with diffusion - or heck - a 7 footer. Spill will be an issue for sure but it seems like you'd need less power on the light. That 600 is mighty close to the edge of your floppy - any issues with that?
@PDMokry
@PDMokry 5 месяцев назад
I hope to keep the momentum going, y'all keep me motivated! I like the sweet spot of work I do. I use the 7' umbrella often, mostly for photos. I might make a comparison. I checked the heat, and it did not seem to be an issue. Thanks for the comment and supporting the channel!
@MattSpaugh
@MattSpaugh 5 месяцев назад
@@PDMokry I did a comparison video recently between three 33" modifiers - reflected with light from below, a softbox/beauty dish, and a diffused umbrella. The final results were fairly predictable, but what surprised me was the efficiency of each setup in terms of light output required. Keep up the great work!
@persvanstrom
@persvanstrom 3 месяца назад
How much softer would this be compared to lets say a 90cm softbox or 150cm softbox for that matter into a 6x6 instead of the bounce? I get that I would need more room for a softbox to fit, but more asking from a quality of light aspect. Great video btw, thx for sharing

A softbox has only one diffusion. The book light has two.

The light needs to be shooting in the opposite direction as the diffusion or else you will have direct light spill going directly into the diffusion which defeats the purpose of a book light.

@@PDMokry Use them often for HiKey portraits/ glamour shots. Basically you get a ginormous (largest size is 2.15 by 2.50 meters) Softbox which you have 2 or more flashes burst into. Gives a very even effect. I have 2 that I can angle towards eachother so I get a very evenly lit "corner".
