Ooh, that might make a great upcoming video! For a short answer: I'd say most of it has to do with the timbre of your instruments; I'd go more aggressive with desert synth than with most ambient and use more saws, brass pads, plucks, etc. I'd also probably choose some mode of harmonic minor to work in for that more aggressive/mysterious sound. Though I think the most distinct characteristics of it are the sound design ones.

I was mostly using Audio Damage's Quanta 2, but really any granular synth or sampler should be able to get similar sounds.
