I think the reasoning behind limiting potatoes and bananas is they are both high in potassium. There's a _little_ evidence to suggest a maternal diet relatively low in potassium and sodium and relatively high in calcium and magnesium tends to shift the odds in favor of conceiving female offspring. (As far as I know though, there's only one human study--most of whose participants didn't really meet the strict criteria to say they had nailed the mineral level plan. The idea is as much or more based on animal studies.) I _think_ the idea with red meat is it's supposed to raise testosterone levels? Which is thought to increase the chances of conceiving a boy--but that might have even less experimental backing.

I don't think that's the case. I think what's happening is that because certain cultures are obsess with having baby boys, there's a little bit of push back on seeing boys as a blessing. Women are under deep pressure to produce a son in those particular cultures. To combat that, some people want baby girls to not feel as if they're a burden but a blessing.
