How to Conduct 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 (Video 1)

I'm a current sophomore in Michigan hoping to be a drum major next year, and i wanted to get a look at how others conducted, just to see what would be the most visible method to keep a large band together. although i do prefer more of a bouncing motion in 2/4, the other two were very clear and had techniques i plan on incorporating into my own style. thank you!

Ah thanks, watching your way of conducting 4/4 really helped improve mine. it looks so much more cleaner and defined now. I'm trying out soon and want to do my utmost best.

Great tutorial! I was chosen to conduct for class tomorrow and this got me an easy answer and step-by-step process on how to! Keep up the good work (I’ve never conducted in my life and I still found this simple to understand. It does take practice though!)

I am one of 3 drum majors in my band but we only taught how to conduct 3/4 (star spangled banner) I just learned how to conduct 2/4 today but I need to know 4/4 tomorrow so this is awesome and easy to understand!

I have had trouble marching in Time for one of our slower tempos in the show and this helped a lot to know what to look for

@OliviaMarieABC Just look at my video on 5/4. I didn't specifically say anything about 7/4 but it would be the same concept, since it's a complex meter it will have to be conducted once in 4/4 and again in 3/4 (4+3 = 7 , for those math whizzes ) but that depends on the speed. Sometimes it's faster which in that case you might have to do a form of 6/8 and adjust it around. If you tell me the song, I can post a video. Thanks for watching! -Moonmatt2

Your 2/4 style might be confusing, I have learned that a "v" style for a more of a march style and a "j" for a mor legato style

@chivagirl123 You might want to conduct in a 3/4 pattern (down, out, up) and pulse the ictus of the 3/4 pattern three times (down, down, down, out, out, out, in, in, in repeat). There might other patterns you could experiment with (like if you get into concert ensemble conducting) but if you are thinking about something for on the field then you might want to stick with what I just told you. Remember to ask your directors too! Don't ever be afraid to approach your director with questions!

Malaguena has 3/4 in it. Common in marching band.

....Might have explained 1-2-3-4 are all upbeats, the downbeats are not counted/demonstrated in 4/4 conducting. Thank you.

Our band is doing a piece at 7/4 and another at 5/4. Could you possibly do a video on these?

Also on 3/4 you bring your hand in not out.

Hello! I’m hoping to be a drum major for my junior year! But one problem I have is moving my hand up or down for a crescendo or a decrescendo while conducting with the other. Any ways to fix it

I liked the 3/4 and 2/4 they were ok but the 4, 4 was kind of weird because you're not supposed to bounce on the down beat

good tips but youre very robotic with your patterns. I am the Drum Major from the Blue Devils. What I like to do in slow tempos such as youre using in the video, is to use rebound instead of not using any. loosen up and look like youre having fun! :)

Are you a drum major, because if you are your hands are not supposed to be like that your conducting style is different. What i mean by this is that is different than mine, also there is a better way to conducts 3/4 and there is a more clear way to conduct 2/4 down and out. I am going to put this out there that before someone thinks that i don't know what I am talking about every comp. I have went to I have one first place Drum Major.
