After a pipeline is installed it will need to be tested for proper assembly. In this episode of Iron Strong Jerry Regula explains how to conduct a successful hydrostatic test of ductile iron pipe, and gives some tips on common problems during the test.
As pipe joints expand under pressure people often think they have a leak. JR teaches us how to overcome this issue.

Is the makeup water being added to the line during the test to maintain test pressure over the two hours?
@McWaneDuctilePipe
@McWaneDuctilePipe 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for your question. The answer is no. Makeup water is only added & evaluated AFTER the completion of the specified testing time frame. Makeup water is generally how you gauge if there is an active leak or not. There should be nothing added and no pump action occurring during the test period itself.

Depends the client your testing for. I do hydro test in the oil and gas field/new and existing pipelines. Some clients like enterprise products won't let u repressure/add water and some like kinder morgan/enbridge will as long as there is no visible leaks. You do have to log/ how much water youve added. It's done by counting ur strokes that the pump gives out. Every pump is different. Common one is a McFarland pump that injects .0469 per stroke and u just do the math .I've tested pipeline up to 8000 psi. But to be fair I've hardly ever tested poly pipe,so procedure can be different

Hello, I really liked your video and setup for the hydro test. Do you have a checklist or BOM for the procurement of setup? I have a small scale testing where my prove test pressure is 30,000 psi. It will be a great help if you can guide me in procuring the apparatus. Thank you!

Yes indeed. Per AWWA C151 (Ductile Iron Pipe, Centrifugally Cast) each pipe receives its own hydrostatic test during the production process of at least 500-psi.

what is make up water ?
@McWaneDuctilePipe
@McWaneDuctilePipe Год назад
When hydrostatic testing a pipeline, it is the amount of water it takes to regain initial test pressure (assuming it has dropped) after specific amount of time. If you require more make up water to regain the pressure level than you would expect for your test setup, this can be an indication of a leak in your pipeline. Thanks for watching.

hi, currently i have this situation, i only have about 4m length of straight pipe, and am required to do pressure test of 150psi for 24 hours by the client, the pressure always drop after 1-2 hours but i cannot find any leak. i am told by my supplier for static pressure test the pressure cannot hold for 24 hours. is there any method to solve this issue? please advise thx

used flange with lowest and highest point connection and always consider the temperature during hydrotesting,stainless are more affected due to temperature condition,if you are using Hydrotesting Chart you will see like a heart beat up and down and that is normal.
@PrMnT562
@PrMnT562 3 года назад
I know this is old but always fill from the lowest point and always vent from the highest point and like the guy in the bottom said depending on the material that the equipment will be tested temperature has to do a lot .. the colder it is it will drop on the gauge the hotter it is the gauge pressure will go up. Double check all bolted valves flanges and other components that where touched and not touched and always wear a faceshield when hydrotesting equipment.

You probably have trapped air; try flushing the line with very rapidly flowing water. Let the water set for a few hours to let the air bubbles to settle. Always put a blow off on your gauge assembly and put it on the top or highest point of the pipe. Might help if you put a 90 degree bend fitting on the test end as well.

Airs volume becomes half as its pressure goes up. Waters volume stays the same.
@McWaneDuctilePipe
@McWaneDuctilePipe 5 месяцев назад
There is an inverse relationship between gas pressure and volume known as Boyle's Law. That's why it's so important to remove air from your line. It will effect results and can be dangerous.

That's an equation to find the allowable waterloss per hour. L=pipe length in Km. D=pipe diameter H=average test head over length of pipeline under test, in metres I don't know how to find H. Thanks

I test a lot in the North East US and very few liquid mainline pipeline operators I work for will accept the Crystal gauges. I have no idea why. I just outfitted a new test trailer. There's about $8k in dead weights, chart recorder and all the damn Swagelok crap to hook it all together. OR one Crystal gauge will do the same for about $2k and basically no swagelok stuff. Not to mention pulling everything out of the trailer to get certified every 6 months. Crystal set-up is nice.

Why on God's green earth would you need a $1,000+ gauge for a relatively low pressure water line test? This is an instructional video for hydrotesting ductile iron water mains, a typical test is 225psi for 2 hours. It's not rocket science and guys have been doing it with success forever.
