Step 1 is missing...cabling up all that stuff onto your patchbay (would love to see that as I'm not using the i/o routing but using direct connection) and the right order. BTW are you using two 8x outputs interfaces daisy chained? Thanks

A video showing how you connect what to where (in and out to the patch bay or directly out from the interface and back in maybe..) would be great. I understand how you select the i/o and etc to rout the signal but physically all that cable running confuses me. All the best.

In order to do it, you first need a device like his SSL AD/DA converter to transfer your digital audio to it, to convert it analog. From there, you have outputs that go to your analog gear inputs. From that gear outs you either go to your patch patchpay if you need to build a "different" chain or plug back into your AD converter. Always try to chase the signal, step by step, from where it should go, to where it should leave...hope that makes sense :)

Great video! I have an old, analog Mackie 32.8 bus mixer and a server tower full of rack gear. Is there a certain order to chain effects in; out to a laptop? It will end with the TC Electronic Finalizer 96k hardware. Should that be be on its own or at the end of a chain? Thank you for any help. p.s. is there an email I could send a picture of my rack to; in case you have certain suggestions, based on the gear I have? At the moment, I only have a pair of Grado SR-80 headphones and 2 Roland DS-50 self-powered monitors, so it looks unfinished for now. I am also missing an ADAT interface. Why not the Antelope Orion? High end converter and digital patchbay included, 1 unit instead of 3? One thing I still did not understand is why people need an interface with 24/192 conversion plus another external converter. Why interfaces are not acceptable as converters and aren't there any all in one solutions out there, like e.g. the Apogee Symphony or other stuff from Antelope?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 года назад
Because they're inferior, that's probably why you don't understand why. Interfaces converters are no "high end" Antelope has been around for very little, lots of people reporting problems etc.. And this is nothing compared to what I have now.

Hi David, have you ever considered to use a console as a center piece since you already have a hybrid system, for example the Rupert Neve 5060 or the API The box, or even a cheaper one like a Toft, I have a pan Allen & Heath zed r16 which doubles as my interface and am happy with it, I probably change the interface to something better but the converters are pretty decent and it is stable, anyway, what do you think about that kind of hybrid setup using a small footprint console as a center piece? What would you consider as pros and cons? Have you ever considered or would you consider something similar? Thank you.. Great channel btw!!!

Hey David, love your videos. Do you find there's a difference with the sound of the motu and ssl ad/da conversion? Gearslutz forums make a big stink about the sound of different converters. I ask because I have a rme ufx and want to expand. Wondering if it would be countetproductive having two sets of converters going at once.. For sound continuity reasons. I know it's not really a big deal just curious if you've thought about it.

David, quick question regarding the final print of the mix. I've just recently started using a hybrid set up but i'm having a few issues that I think are to do with latency in the final print. I create a send on my submix (bus 160 in my template), and use that bus as the input to a new audio track. Is this similar to how you approach the final print using hardware? I use logic and compensate for the hardware using the ping function in the I/O plugin. No issues there. I'm wondering if issues are arising recording the final print due to maybe I/O buffer size or something. It may not be related to the hardware at all and simply latency within plug-ins i'm using in the session but i've never encountered the problem before because I was bouncing the session out instead of recording the session through a bus to a new audio track. Have you had any issues like this? If so, how did you go about solving it? Cheers, Matt.
@greenenoiseaudio
@greenenoiseaudio 4 года назад
MixbusTV tracks don’t seem to lining up quite the same, definitely some kind of minor latency problem that is occurring. Eg a lead vocal that has hardware IO being slightly out of time with doubles and harmonies, despite sounding fine when the vocals are all solo’d and played together. I’m going to do some investigating to see if eliminating the hardware fixes it or if it is a problem recording the mix into the session. I thought you may have some experience of this with your workflow. I’m considering whether it is a recording latency problem, similar to how if you recorded with a high IO buffer setting or used latency inducing plugins(which I definitely do during mixing) you would get latency. Sorry it that’s a little confusing, David. Appreciate if you have any help or experience with this.
@greenenoiseaudio
@greenenoiseaudio 4 года назад
MixbusTV I’d hope the ping function would elimate the ADDA element. I think you’re right though and it’s some sort of compensation problem regarding auxes. Hope I can sort it out. Your channel inspired me to start taking things out of the box and I’m enjoying it apart from this issue. Thanks for taking the time out to reply man.

Isn't mulit da/ad a problem for Sound quality? If i go out for each unit for example 10 units, i have 10 conversions. Wouldn't plugins then be better?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv Месяц назад
Why would you go in and out 10 times out of a converter? Nobody does that, there is absolutely no case in which you would do that with one track. If you have 10 units and you want to use all 10 of them on a track (which i can't even imagine why) you would stay in the analog domain from unit 1 to 10 and then back into PT. One conversion, whether you daisy chain or use a patchbay you would never go in an out 10 times. If you're talking about 10 units for 10 different tracks, that's not 10 conversion, is one (for each track) and that is absolutely no problem with the quality of converters we have now. (or even 20 years ago because that's how analog mixing has always been)
@TheDukeOfBlues
@TheDukeOfBlues Месяц назад
@@mixbustv That was an extreme example. When I think of drums, I's have first AD when tracking, then DA/AD for compressor and EQ, same again for drum bus, then mix bus and last mastering. Or am I completely wrong? Which converters are you actually using?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv Месяц назад
That's how analog mixing has been working forever. The difference is that we used to have consoles, so all you're describing (until mastering) was happening in the analog stage, each drum channel getting an insert, then they were sent (via console) to the busses then to the mixbus, each stage with their inserts. If you don't have a console, you do it with multiple passes, which happened before anyway. But converters are much better now than 20 years or more ago. But also this is why we have patchbays and in my case, the Flock, to avoid multiple conversions when it's possible. Yet, I have a video test showing how much it affects the audio, I did the test at the lowest possible SR with my "worst" converters and still you can't hear anything until you hit 5 or 6 passes. Which means at higher SR you won't have any difference until probably 20 passes. I use both MOTU and Dangrous converters

Hey David, sorry for having a stupid question. In your studio you have mixers in the recording-rooms, so thats obviously the preamps and line-inputs you use to record? But where the signal of each track is going then? Interfaces have usually a maximum of 8 inputs, you use them for your outboard-gear. How you put 32 audio-signals or more into the DAW if you do multitrack-recording or even just drums recorded with more then 8 mics? Sorry for being a pain in the ass, but thats what I really didn’t get!

Hi David, tech question based on the subject... Up until a few months ago I had a similar (but much smaller) operation going. I was using (and still am) an Audient ID22 interface and had a Behringer ADA8200 connected via ADA. The problem I had is all of the signals going out from the PC and through the ADA8200 to the patchbay (where I could then patch in various outboard) was very weak. I tried all sorts to fix it. In the end I put it down to some kind of error in my setup where perhaps impedances were mismatched or something. I watched some other videos where users had it set up very similar to me and had some great success. I've now sold the ADA8200 and am wondering whether it is worth trying again with a better ADAT expander? I originally wanted to do this so I could essentially output 10 channels / tracks from my DAW out to the patchy bad at the same time allowing for some hybrid mixing, but I was more focussed on messing about with analogue summing solutions. Thanks for your time and great videos as ever.

Or something else? I want to use my preamps XLR output to TRS into the patchbay then route my compressors accordingly when recording. I also need them connected separately for mixing clients, which is why I need the patchbay lol. Thanks!

You can connect the output of your preamp to the patchbay safely, what you can't do is run 48v thru it so you can't run your mic cable into the patchbay or your preamp input into it.

This might be a dumb question but how do pro tools record what changes you make on the hardware?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 года назад
No dumb question at all. When you mix hybrid the units you use are in "insert" on channels, groups, 2bus etc.. just like plugins. You don't print, the mix goes into the machines at all times, in real time, and you only print the final mix, you might want to check videos here about hybrid mixing, we have several

How does your DAW recognise the hardware, are there drivers for every bit of hardware?
@IntheDAW
@IntheDAW 4 года назад
Its It's just using the two interfaces line inputs the patchbay bascially routs the outputs of the interfaces into gear abd back into the inputs of those interfaces.
@Bring_MeSunshine
@Bring_MeSunshine 4 года назад
@@IntheDAW Cheers. So I assume you then just label the inserts within Pro Tools, or whatever your DAW is?
@IntheDAW
@IntheDAW 4 года назад
@@Bring_MeSunshine it depends on the daw. Inside studio one they have a plugin that you just route the inputs and ouputs and it measures the latency and compensates. Inside pro tools you go to your I O section and build it from your in and out. With measuring the delay it takes to compensate

Hi! I have some compressors (LA2A, 1176, DBX166XS) and an EQ as ouboard gear all connected to a patchbay. The interface is a Steinberg UR44. When I choose the I/O plugin în Logic, I get a nasty feedback squeek. Any ideas on what I do wrong? All the outputs are on the bottom of the patchbay and all the inputs are on the top and the patchbay is set to Thru so they are not connected.

Greetings, not sure if this helps, but I thought the rule of thumb for patchbays were top = out, bottom = in. Correct me if I'm wrong
@BeatzShack
@BeatzShack 3 года назад
@@gunluv96 Thank you ! I Was wrong when I have said ins are on top and outs are on bottom. I meant the other way around. I have changed my interface since then. It was basically the routing was done wrong in the DAW and the philosophy is that you can't use outboard gear as inserts without send/receive plugs on your interface, only record through the outboard gear onto another audio track.

Then recalculate all your delay compensation for each piece of gear? Avid, its 2020, add a ping feature, please!! lol!

I didnt understand a single thing ,sounds too complicated. I am happy with ITB man. Just give me a reference sound of hardware, and i am good to go to emulate it in the box itself. :D
