hey everybody. i got hung up on the send data portion but i realized i didn't select the FCB1010's MIDI devices in the manager. The manager recognized my audio device but the FCB1010 didn't recognize my UAD-Volt. this isn't explicitly in the tutorial but it's why my Send Data stuff was greyed out.

@@guitarschoollive I built my own DAW a year ago AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor, 64gigs of RAM using a Gigabyte B550M AORUS PRO Motherboard. Tested it by adding a huge amount of virtual instruments & plugins all CPU heavy 3 times more than anyone would ever use in a single multitrack project/song. With all tracks running my CPU averaged 6% with a pulse to 12% every few seconds !! Video editing software is only a few percent higher. And I was able to build my DAW for about $800-$850. I mix for other clients so I have Pro Tools, CuBase, Reaper, Logic ect. but I do all my recording with Presonus Studio One 6. In my opinion it's the best recording software on the market. So Yes I use a DAW, The one I built & thanks for asking.
Nice system! I have a Ryzen 9 128gb ram system I built 3 years ago. It’s overkill but it’s 1/3 the cost of a less loaded computer with the fruit logo. :) The reason I asked what you use is because I make and/or have videos scheduled on all of the software you mentioned. However, with your skill level you may find those videos rudimentary. If you’re up to it, when I start posting videos for mixing and production maybe we can do an interview with you to give insight into what it takes to mix as a professional. Just a thought. About the interview, sounds good, just give me as much of a heads up as possible. I do have some tried n true methods when it comes to mixing that you almost never see on the web, especially collectively. In step 2 I usually press the UP button twice but I guess its the same as pressing the DOWN button once. I never used FCB1010 Manager as I used FCB1010 PC Editor that is similar. But I followed your tutorial video to know how to use the Manager as well. Thank you.
It worked perfectly with the standalone program but when I used it in Reaper, it wouldn't detect PC commands so I made pedals 1-5 send note commands instead

Two things. When using Neural DSP, having the Volume Expression Pedal set to 127 doesn’t make sense. That’s way too loud / unusable. Any volume knob set at noon would be approximately a 64 Value. That’s for use as a volume pedal specifically . I guess for a Wah or Whammy..etc you should have your maximum value at 127. Second thing is : a great alternate way to set your preset switches is to “select all” in the FCB 1010 manager chart for 100 presets. So each 10 switches on all 10 banks can be assigned to a preset. That way, if you want to have Switch 1 on Bank 0 be your main rhythm guitar - and next you plan to use the same preset but with the Distortion pedal / knob OFF then you save it as another preset in Neural DSP and just assign it to Switch 2 for example. To set it up this way, you just skip the steps where he’s setting up pedals 6 to 10. You only setup the preset changes 1 to 100 and the expression pedals. All this applies to using One instance of Neural DSP at a time in Standalone. Personally the Element App didn’t work for me to use multiple instances in ProTools. I know it’s a common issue people are having. What are Y’all using to control multiple instances in ProTools !??

Hi, i jist found that using my fcb to neural dsp wasn't working until i reset the parameter on the master volume.. Otherwise no signal was exchanged... Now its working... 🎉. Thx so much..

Hello @EddybleedIll, we’re happy you found the video useful. To answer your question, the stock FCB1010 cannot reflect the on/off states of the software. You can however purchase an aftermarket UNO chip and configure it to reflect the toggle state of the software. We personally feel that this is not necessary for Neural DSP plugins because you can simply save various stompbox configurations as presets. IE: preset1 overdrive on chorus off, preset2 overdrive off chorus on. If you’re interested in purchasing the chip follow the link below. Thanks for this tutorial is Awesome! Despite I followed and all seems to work as expected, when using the enable MIDI learn on any preset or parameter, and pressing the desired button twice, it simply does not get anything. If I go to the midi mapping, nothing is recorded either.
Hello @DonTitoification, thank you for reaching out to us for assistance. If midi messages are not being transmitted there are usually 3 culprits: 1. The cables are connected improperly - Make sure ‘Midi Out’ of the controller connects to ‘Midi In’ of your interface 2. You’re using a USB to Midi cable - The only one known to work consistently is the Roland UM-ONE MK2 USB to Midi cable. Most of the cheaper cables cannot send the large data packets required by the FCB1010 3. Thanks for this video. I've followed along about 10 times now and still cant seem to get it working. When I right click on the preset and hit "Enable Midi Learn", the plugin goes kinda grey and hangs in that state since its not receiving a signal apparently. I have tried many configurations in terms of plugging into a midi interface as well as directly into the back of my audio interface. Yet, I follow along and do everything to a T , but it wont catch. Its worth noting that on the step that takes place at 2:54, "Enable Select Note" from 0:6 - 0:8, the preset window shows 0' s in the CNT1 and Val 1, that aren't in the video example. Really eager to get this working. I'll subscribe now!

This is AWESOME! I noticed that you have a similar video for controlling Guitar Rig 6 with the FCB1010, however the values in the mountain app are different in the Neural vs. the Guitar Rig one. Does programming one exclude the other? Could I use certain banks for Guitar Rig 6 and other banks for Neural Dsp products? If so, is that a different process? Or is it doing both videos process, one, and then the other?

Many guitarists do that with multiple amp sims (ex: Bank1-Neural DSP, Bank2-Amplitube, Bank3-Bias FX2etc.) If you find yourself running out of banks you can save your setup on your computer with following steps: • From the editor go to ‘File’ • ‘FCB1010’ • Save • enter a name for the sysex file (ex: BiasFX2backup) • Select a file location (You may want to create a folder on your desktop) • Click save Now you can overwrite the Banks on the FCB1010 and restore your setup from the saved sysex file. Great video, worked like a charm! Quick question..What are these values 7 and 11 mean for expA and expB ? .Where can I get more info about these values? However, you can use any number you wish as long as that number is not used anywhere else. As far as using this for Cory Wong there is good news and even better news. The good news is yes, you can use this for Cory Wong. The better news is you can use it without doing any programming. If you have not altered the settings on banks 1 through 9, simply bank up to any bank and then follow the directions on the following video. Even though it is for Gojira the steps for Cory Wong are the same. Hello and thank you for the excellent tutorial! It helped me a lot while figuring out this controller and neural dsp petrucci! Now, on to the question I had in mind! Have you got any ideas if it's possible to auto engage the wah wah pedal by moving the physical pedal? It's not super convinient to press on a effect button and then start using the wah and there isn't a button underneath the pedal itself. I saw someone had done a physical mod on the board and added a button underneath the pedal so it works like a regular wah wah does... But I don't want to physically mod the board if possible. So can it be done with some midi command wizardry, or am I out of luck in this sense?
Hello @jarmake1923, thank you for reaching out to us with your question. It is possible to auto engage the Wah, however you will still need to press a pedal to disengage it. If you wish to auto engage the Wah follow the 7 steps below: 1. Midi learn the Wah position 2. Click the midi icon on the bottom left of the plugin to open ‘Midi Mappings’ 3. Click the plus icon to add a new row 4. In the ‘Type’ field enter ‘CC Value’ 5. In the ‘Parameter/Preset’ field select’ WOW Active’ from the drop down 6. In the ‘Note/CC/PC’ field enter the same cc number as ‘WOW Position’ 7. Finally in the ‘Value’ field select ‘Active’ Now the pedal will auto engage when you step on it. As I stated earlier you will have to program a pedal to turn it off. In the editor set a pedal to CNT1, enter the number “0” and load it to the controller. Then follow the 7 steps above except enter ‘Inactive’ in the value field. One last question, I followed along to program a single bank as in your video. If I want to program the same values on other banks, is there a quick way of being able to copy everything to bank 2 for instance, or do I have to repeat the video step by step on the other banks? Hello @maximio212, nice to hear from you. Unfortunately your question is one that troubles all midi users regardless of the controller or software. From Keyboard players to guitarists, and even those that use hardware (Tonex, Kemper etc.) have to deal with latency. There are many factors that cause this issue; and mostly all of them are computer and interface related. Since each computer is different, we are unable nor qualified to assist in what changes need to be made. The best we can recommend is to take to the internet and search out those that have similar computer specs to yours and see what steps they took to solve their issues. I would advise you to make sure you write down all of your original settings before you make any changes to your computer in case you need to restore them. Good luck, Guitar School Live P.S. Need help with a quesiton if possible for fcb1010 , i have scarlet 2i2 (that doesn't have midi channels) and I was wondering that if i need a cable adaptor which is midi to usb (to connect the 2 midi channels into one usb for my pc). Also was wondering how the signal would be in this scenario if I want to use neural dsp. Do i play guitar direct into my scarlet 2i2 and do i connect fcb1010 with a cable interface (midi >usb) just to change settings/preset in neural dsp? Really want to know what's best to do in this scenario and where do I connect my guitar if my focusrite doesn't have midi ports 🤗 much appreciated
Hello Robert, thank you for reaching out to us for assistance. If you plan on using a USB to Midi cable the only one that is known to work is the Roland UM-ONE mk2 USB MIDI Interface. The FCB1010 sends and receives large sysex data that cheaper cables cannot transmit. As for the setup you would plug your guitar into the Focusrite and your FCB1010 into your computer via the USB midi cable. When you receive your USB to midi cable if you have any difficulties feel free to reach out to us as we are more than happy to assist you. @@guitarschoollive thx for the help, i. use neural dsp and ableton, but looking more into the details I think I will pass on buying the fcb1010 because my church will buy a helix processor for guitar, so I will just practice on neural dsp at home while playing on helix during church service. I imagine it to be a huge hassle to move my laptop + fcb1010 + focusrite + cables to make it work, which in theory has a bigger chance to cause issues due to the vast items being involved, rather than just guitar + helix. Simplicity is great not gonna lie. But thanks for the reply even though I gave up on that ideea and I'll just settle to play neural at home in my ableton live
Hello bambusek7, thank you for your question. PC (Program Change) messages are meant to change presets while Note messages send alternating On and Off messages(Note On and Note Off). That’s why we use Note messages to toggle effects. Neural DSP has the ability to use multiple types of messages for the same function, but we use the standard protocol for midi setup. Hello I'm using a Steinberg UR22 mkII to transmit the midi and a MacBook pro as the device. I'm having the issue where the green "send" button on the program doesn't light up. I've restarted the program multiple time but it won't work.

Thanks for the tutorial. However there is considerable lag when switching presets, which kinda makes it unusable in a live setting, which is what I was planning to do. Any idea for a fix besides getting a Quad Cortex?
Hello Ben, thank you for reaching out to us. You are correct that there is lag. It will be an issue with all software based setups and compounded with less than optimal computers. There are vst hosts such as Gig Performer and Mainstage along with daws such as Reaper and Studio One that many performers use live but again, software performance will be based on your system. You may want to experiment with some of the less expensive options before investing in the Quad Cortex. We are currently working on a tutorial demonstrating how guitarists can get Gig Performer functionality in Reaper. If you’re a Reaper user this will be a useful tutorial. @@guitarschoollive Thank you for your response. I am just using Neural DSP standalone at the moment. I wanted to run a laptop, focusrite 2i4 and FCB1010 with Neural DSP standalone straight into the PA. All works fine apart from the audible lag when switching presets as ive already mentioned. Perhaps using a vst host like Topten Cantabile with the vst version of Neural DSP could be less cpu intensive than the standalone version, would have to try to see.
I also wondered if using something like Element to run different versions of the same neural dsp vst plugin, but with different settings. If that would result in less lag than internally switching presets within the standalone version. I noticed you had another video covering Element, is that something you've experienced in regard to lag?

Every time I get to the last step, I can't get my Fortin Cali to program the pedal switches. I'm doing this in Cakewalk if that matters, I have the midi input and output checked and Midi Input is enabled in Fortin Cali. Can't get it to recognize the FCB1010

***SOLVED Hello - I'm using a Roland UM-ONE mk2 USB MIDI "Interface". ( to me that's what I'd call a MIDI to USB cable but.....) So the FCB1010 is connected to my MacBook directly. I'm using an Apollo Twin X ( no MIDI ) connected to my MacBook to launch Neural DSP plugins either as Standalone or in ProTools. EDIT : So I worked out the MIDI Red and Green Icons in the FCB1010 Manager... But now I'm stuck at the "Control Neural DSP" step - when I press the Switch twice, nothing happens in Archetype Gojira. The Enable MIDI Learn is ineffective and the Plugin remains greyed out, so I just have to close it to try anything further. EDIT #2 So I went through each step carefully two more times, restarted Archetype Gojira.... IT IS NOW SOLVED ONE THING THAT COULD BE GOOD TO MENTION FOR NOOBS IS TO ENABLE THE MIDI INPUT DEVICE IN THE AUDIO SETTINGS MENU OF THE Neural DSP plugin... I had done it before, but probably messed up some of the values / steps / or possibly failed to SAVE THE CHART / FILE IN THE FCB10101 MANAGER.

I Thought I’d never get it but after 3 hours I got some presets assigned and working. Now I want to get multiple plug-ins working and I see you also have a video for that, so I’ll be Liking and subscribing. 👍🏻 One last little note, while entering values in the chart, when you say repeat above procedure, sometimes it can get tough to be sure if we made each step correctly or know how far back in the video we gotta go to be certain 100%. Better to assume we’re dumb ( and I totally am when it comes to MIDI or computer stuff ) and actually spell out each of those little steps. Looking at a small chart and some numbers is pretty far from what a lot of guitarists have in mind and I know I find it hard to concentrate between all the chain elements so I had to do it 3 times to make sure everything was dialed properly
Hi thanks for the tutorial. I am having issues transmitting the data from the editor to the footboard. I follow the steps, and at the point I am supposed to see the config light flash, it doesn't. I am not sure if this is the cause of the issue, but when I later try to program the controls in Neural DSP, it doesn't register the presses. It does acknowledge that the midi footpedal is connected though. I am using a midi to usb cable because I am not sure how else to connect it to a laptop. Thanks in advance for the help!

I finally got the Roland UM-ONE mk2 and now the data is beautifully sent from the FCB manager to the pedalboard and now the presets can be assigned to the switches but there must always be a fly on the soup.... the expression pedals won´t work and the values on the FCB manager were entered exactly as shown in this tutorial but when using the MIDI LEARN function to assign the wha or the whammy on the expression pedals it won´t do anything.... HELP!
Hi! I explained myself wrong. I have both expressions pedal on CC Absolute and cc7 and 11 but I can only make cc11 control the sweeping on the volume pedal or wah. When I use the expression pedal on cc7, it only toggles the volume gain on or off but I can't control its sweeping.
when i use the midi learn option it works after one click but after i tried in on another preset it didn’t work and it switched back to the first one and wouldn’t let me even pick another preset (i am using the Roland UM-ONE mk2)

Hi! Was just wondering what would happen if I set the expressions to anything other than 7 and 11 and how would effect their function? Was trying to set up the expressions for a different dsp plugin than the one I originally programed it for but it would only work for original and I think it's tied to their assigned numbers but I don't how changing the numbers for EXP A and EXP B would change anything? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Just make sure that they are not used by any other control when you set it up in your plugin or you will be controlling 2 things with one pedal. After this video was published NDSP has been updated. Hello I finally got the standalone version working but I am having trouble making the same thing work in Reaper. I saw your other video and repeated the steps twice but I may be doing something wrong. Any advice on how to get that set up correctly? I would also like to ask if there is a way to set the pedals in a way where the lowest point is actually just noon on the knob. Im trying to use this to adjust the transpose knob as a pseudo digi tech whammy pedal in Gojira X.

Hi! I tried to use it with the Studio One 5, but it doesn`t work. I failed at the Enable Midi on the Neural DSP plugin. Won`t go further. I tap the switch nr 1 twice, but nothing happens...
Does anyone know what chip I should have to do this? I contacted the guy I purchased the preowned unit from, and he said he bought it new back in 96 and made no physical changes to the chip inside, it's the stock one. I assume I'd very likely need a more recent chip for a firmware update. Assuming that's the main issue. If it is the main issue, there's another problem with it being glued in. I'd have quite a time getting it out. 🤦♂️

Hm, might be more than the chip itself for the moment. I've got my setup out right now. The FCB1010 connected to a usb port on my macbook using a Roland UM-ONE MK2 midi interface. Went with that route since my Scarlett Solo doesn't have any 5 pin midi ports on it. With these things connected. I followed along to this videos instructions up to the point of attempting to set up the controller to receive the sysex data from the manager. I turned the controller off, then held the down button as I powered it back on and was met with no green light. Just two flashing 8's that shortly switch to 0's when I release the down button. I keep my foot pressed down quite long but no green light shows.
Hello @Seekaywastaken, flashing 88 means there is a data loop. Turn off the controller and disconnect the Midi Out/Thru plug from the controller; that will resolve the issue. Once you transfer the data, plug Midi Out/Thru back in and disconnect Midi IN. Also make sure your switch on the Roland USB cable is in the correct position for tablet or computer. I am using the kushview element software to switch between the neural dsp plugins, plini and tim henson using the FCB1010. For the most part this works well, but the CPU engine running window at the bottom shows that the CPU is consistently running between 75% to 100% and every once and a while a little glitch is introduced into the sound and my surface book 3 has locked up the touchpad a few times for some reason. I am thinking it is because of the high CPU load. I've already shut off wifi, closed unnessessary background processes and unloaded just about everything except for my plugins and the programs running them. I do have the NI Komplete Kontrol load of software which is pretty heafty, but that's it. I think the laptop processor is i7. Any idea how to alleviate this? Is there a better way to toggle between plugins?

I'm using the FCB1010 with an EurekaProm 3.2 chip installed. It all works wonders, but I'm experience a severe latency ONLY when using the expression pedals to control CC parameters. It's strange because everything else in my setup has no latency at all. Audio is ok. Even the FCB1010's footswitches are lightning fast, but the exp pedals... Any tips?

I followed the short video instructions and solved the problem. Now the only thing is the exp B pedal doesn't respond when I try to link it, also there's some latency between the presets change. I use Neural dsp standalone. If I may ask, is there a way to link more Neural dsp standalones at once? Maybe I want to use a Rabea rhythm but a Petrucci lead, for example. Is it possible?
Hello Mattia Facciol, we’re glad the video was helpful. As for expression pedal B, keep in mind that it must be programmed for each numbered pedal on the controller. If you step on a numbered pedal and the expression pedal is not lit, you must go back into the editor and program it for that pedal. i was using the gojira plugin through ableton not the standalone. i switched to the standalone and im still having the same issue even after following the video. i did notice that my gate knob's decimal place is flickering between 2 numbers and i think its messing with the midi learn step. ive tried to reinstall it but same issue. is it possible to do it through ableton? ok so im still having same issue with enabling midi learn staying grey when i double click 1-5. i can however enable midi learn for the whammy pedal to the expression pedal. on the presets tab in fcb1010 manager my CNT 1 and Val 1have zeroes in their columns where yours does not. is that maybe the issue? i cannot figure out how to get rid of the zeroes in those columns.@@guitarschoollive

If so, the only cable capable of sending the data to and from the FCB1010 is the Roland cable. Hello @jfl4649, if you can see the midi device but can’t connect then there is something on your computer that has control of the device. Do you have a daw open or any other plugins? If so close them and the computer will released the midi device. Guitar School Live

Hi, i have an issue with EXP programming. I am able to successfully midi learn any parameter for the EXP to control; however, if i program a different control to the EXP in another preset then the previously programmed control in the other preset is changed to whatever is the latest programmed control. So, obviously the programming of the EXP is acting globally. I thought I was supposed to be able to program the EXP to operate different controls in different presets.

So if you assign cc7 to input gain in one preset it it will control input gain in all presets. Personally I definitely notice a volume dropout when switching from one preset to another ( ! ) But on the off chance this is about a different volume level in the presets themselves when using the FCB, better adjust and even out all of them again in the Neural DSP plug-in itself

Hello, I successfully sent the midi assignments to my FCB1010. But, then when I attempted to load more assigmnets at a later time it didn't work. I got this message - Error: Error sending MIDI System Exclusive message. Can you help with this? thanks Undefined external error.
There are a number of reasons that can cause that error and most of them are computer related. You may be sending a loop. Try disconnecting the cable from midi out on the controller while you’re using the editor. If the above doesn’t work then I will need to know more about your setup in order to assist you. Are you using Windows or Mac? Midi cables or USB to midi? If USB to midi the only cable that works consistently is the Roland cable. If Mac OS troubleshooting can be tricky. I need to state that no one will be here with a reply until 8pm est(we’re not available Thursdays and Sundays). If you solve the problem before we get back to you please post an update. Hey, guys! I managed to program the pedalboard but I was wondering how to use one expression pedal as a gradual volume pedal and the other as a wah. I tried connecting both but I can only use one gradually, the other simply turns on a preset. Anyone know how to do it? Thanks!

If you’re stepping on an expression pedal and it is changing presets you must have accidentally moved the expression pedal while you were setting up midi learn to change presets. To remedy this: • Click the midi icon in the bottom left corner • When the pane opens check for cc# 7 and cc#11 in the ‘Note/CC/PC’ column(4th column from the left). If you see either one of those as ‘CC preset’ in the type column simply delete it and midi learn the Wah. It should work after that. Please let us know if you’re still having an issue. Hello cabijista1, thanks for reaching out to us. You’re correct in that this will not work in logic or for that matter in any daw. This video is for standalone. Each daw has its own way of handling midi with plugins. You would have to consult you manual on how it’s done. Hi, The midi learn is not working for the preset assignment. Everything worked as you said until i got to the 9:30 mark of your video. When i attempt assign presets to pedals 1 through 5 by pressing the perspective pedals twice the amp head does not return from the whitened screen and none of the pedals control presets.

Holy Cow! That worked. And, it took you only about 5 minutes to reply. I am super impressed and so glad because i was wanted to use this for a gig coming up in a couple of days and didn't have time to mess around. Thank you. One thing though. The amp head does not go back to normal view after i press button twice, but nonetheless the midi learn worked and the pedal now toggles amps. Thank you
I followed the directions, and when i select "midi Learn" on the NDSP plugin it remains greyed out after i press the # buttin twice and does not complete...

Before we begin diagnosing first I need to know did your controller flash and did you receive the countdown when you sent sysex from the editor to the controller? Thanks Guitar School Live
@@guitarschoollive what is the “countdown”? I restarted the board with the pedal “down” pressed. That turned the light green. Then pressed down again and then bank 7. That should’ve completed the transfer.
Hello Ivan, thanks for your reply. When you press the green button on the editor the led on the FCB1010 should flicker. With that aside let’s move forward. If you’re using a usb to midi cable the only one that is known to work is the Roland UM-ONE mk2. The others cannot transmit the long data messages that are needed for the FCB1010. If you’re using an interface then more than likely your controller is not connected to the plugin. Hello Ivan, this is Larry@guitarschoollive and I'm taking over the support for your issue. I apologize if some questions are repeated but we must make sure your controller is properly setup and then work forward from there. After you transfer the sysex to your controller you must hold the down pedal until the countdown finishes or else the controller will not function. If you’re using 2 cables from your controller disconnect the midi out when you transfer the sysex to make sure you’re not getting a data loop. After that reconnect the midi out and disconnect the midi in. Then follow the short video that was posted to you earlier and let me know how that works. Guitar School Live
Everything with the editor and transferring worked fine. But when I try to map by stepping twice on the pedal I get no response. I’m using an midi to usb cable as my Focusrite doesn’t have mini with a cable to both midi in and midi out that leads to a usb running to my pc. Under "midi input devices" the box for "usb midi interface" is ticked, but still no response when trying to map to pedals, despite trying multiple usb slots. I ll keep trying.
Hello Eric, thank you for reaching out to us for assistance. If you're using a USB to midi cable the only one that can send the long sysex messages the FCB1010 requires is the Roland cable. Hello oleg olin, thanks for your question. If you know how to configure your Daw to receive midi messages for vst plugins it will work. The only Daw I know of that it will not work is Studio One. What Daw are you using? Guitar School Live

Hi, I'm having the issue where the green "send" button on the program doesn't light up. I followed all the steps, but I don't know which chip is in here. I already had it working prior to this, but the foot controller stopped transmitting midi suddenly, I don't know what happened or how to troubleshoot. EDIT: I'm using a Steinberg UR22 mkII to transmit the midi and a MacBook pro as the device. Edit #2: I got the "send" button working by doing a reset of the program and went through the steps, it transmitted (known via the green "config" light going off and on again) but when I go to program it, it won't activate the switches. I tried to select a preset and double click the switches, and it will not work. Edit #3: I didn't have "midi input devices" selected in Neural DSP... it seems like it works now, I should have checked that first lol.
We're happy you got it working. Don't feel bad about not checking midi input devices. I once had a midi keyboard that stopped transmitting data. I took it apart and spent nearly twenty minutes trying to diagnose what was wrong with it before I realized it wasn't plugged in. 😂 We have many videos scheduled that may be of interest to you.
