I watched this video before going to shoot with father in law. He has a small arsenal and a wealth of gun knowledge and been shooting with twice. This time he brought way more with him so now I have shot more than when I commented. This video taught me a lot and while no pro it gave me a good base to start at and some good techniques to make muscle memory. So now I have shot .380, shot a Glock that was 9mm I think, shot 1911 45 and while I was nervous with that one I fell in love with it and is very fun to shoot, an SKS, and and old lever rifle I can’t remember the name or caliber. This trip taught me a great deal and I eagerly await the next time we go and can continue to stack on knowledge and grow. They aren’t toys, so respect that they aren’t no matter how comfortable you may get with them.

@@brantinpUSMVMC so I didn’t go to a school. I spent a year and a half in a factory making wind blades. After that, I was fortunate to get picked up by a great company. Usually 8-12 hour days. 6-8 weeks traveling the continental US 1 week at home is the industry standard if you’re a traveling tech.

Mojo is so fast I had to watch his trigger discipline multiple times! Great advice and demonstration. 👍Problem for many of us is range time and getn that practice in. Finding a range that allows this type of training is difficult. Someone needs to create more outdoor ranges nationwide so we can apply these fundamentals and get better.

@@paladinmorose6305 That's not entirely true. I don't medicate it. The only thing that suffers is that I tend to misplace tools and my time management leaves a lot to be desired. But, I can do really good precision work, whether it's carpentry, metalwork, etc. Whatever I touch becomes the best version of itself, but it does take more time for me to do something than if someone else did it.

I remember the first gun I ever shot when I was 10 was an old 1940s era featherweight 12 gauge loaded with slug rounds. I had bruises all over my shoulder. Guess it taught me to learn the proper way to control recoil

Some of the best advice and instruction I have seen on RU-vid. Great to hear your explanation of Nature Point of Aim. That was one of the hardest things for me to master as a young Marine. I have the same problem in reverse. Have to make do with rifles and shotguns by shooting left handed (which is easy for me), and turn my wrists funny for alignment with handguns. For some reason, I can't grip with shooting handguns from my non-dominant hand.

@@12ealDealOfficial I got the same problem because my non-dominant eye has nerve damage. Pistols right handed and rifles left handed. One suggestion for pistols is turning your head towards the dominant hand and looking down the sights that way but still keeping both eyes open. It allows your dominant eye to still have peripheral vision and you may look a bit dumb with your head turned a bit, BUT it's better grip if you don't have to turn the gun weird

And to the OP, you can get a cold fire(I think that's the name) compressed air adapter to practice the principles in this video with compressed air cycling the slide in your gun instead of bullets.

@@kairu_aname Great suggestion. Have shot much more since the post and started doing this to compensate. Now I shoot everything ambi, but am more proficient left side. A while back I got a nice carry holster that is right side draw, and am too poor to buy the left hand holster.

Not only is this a fun video, but there's also a ton of actionable information that you can take to the range, and build into a foundation that will (with practice) last forever. The points made are logical with good supporting evidence. I also appreciated the "look out for this" tips to make sure you can apply corrective steps when you get off track. I will definitely be watching this a few more times with an extra critical eye.

When working with a new shooter who has a flinch that's effecting them I actively avoid criticizing it. Rather, I talk about how it's them demonstrating good fundamentals in attempting to control recoil and all we have to do is get that recoil control into the right point of the shooting sequence and they'll be a good shooter. It's a very effective strategy, especially when working with a new shooter that lacks in confidence.

That’s a great suggestion for helping new shooters. Do you cycle a dummy round through their magazine? The random click and yanking the muzzle down makes you anticipate it and not yank the muzzle.

@@10Sethg I've tried that with mixed results. The majority of the time the unpredictability of the outcome results in more flustering than learning. I have found that doing that once or twice as a 'skill check' has some merit, but not more than that in any session. The rest of it is in conversation and dry practice. The other other thing to add would be that I try to get them to "accept the recoil", and not fear it. Then we'll work on controlling the recoil as much as possible.
