I share your concern about how Nigel Farage seems to be given a "free pass" by so much of the mainstream media. Thank goodness there is somewhere in the media that the risks Farage and Tice present are being taken seriously.

Nothing clever about being able to do his podcast on a train, you can phone your mother from the top of Everest these days. Might be a nice publicity stunt for Farage which given the death rate on the big hill might be a good suggestion

As someone who has trouble with sensory overload and can get a bit flustered when podcasts have lots of noise, hosts who interrupt or talk over each other, etc the way Rory was so mindful of not flooding the audio with background noise from the train was so appreciated. That and seeing y'all just roll with what was undoubtedly an inconvenient wrench thrown in to the day is refreshing. Even though I'm quite to the left of both Rory and Alistair, this podcast is such a great way to stay informed and hear mature discussion on issues that are increasingly critical to all our countries, no matter where you're listening in from. Hopefully there will one day be a field trip to the States but either way i will definitely plan a vacation to Europe so it coincides with a live show!

The Lib Dems are focusing on a smaller number of target seats and specific campaign issues in those seats. In our constituency for example the focus is on water & sewage - Layla Moran was quite clear on the national Lib Dem policy on water on Radio 4. Sadly they, and even the Greens, don't get the same publicity and air time as Farage & Reform though.

At 30:00, winning marginals with 30% of the vote in a 3 way contest. Of course, it's possible to win the election in a 2-way, with just over 25% of the vote, with your losing opponent getting nearly 75% if you win just over 50% of the seats with 51% of the vote and lose just under 50% of the seats with 0%. In a 3-way election you can win the election with about 17% (i.e. 50% with 33.4% of the vote and lose just under 50% with 0%).

To add to your comments on Israel bombing southern Lebanon…reports on The Guardian of the Israeli Air Force bombing civilian villages on the southern Lebanese coast forcing the occupants to leave their homes and livelihoods: it’s sounding like a deliberate policy of de-populating the area by indiscriminately targeting Lebanese civilians…which itself is a Crime against Humanity but they don’t care, as usual.

This supermajority nonsense just shows how entrenched they are in Tory main character syndrome, laughable "exceptionalism" totally out of touch with reality. Their potential demotion to third place doesn't give Labour remarkable superpowers in and of itself. It just diminishes the tories themselves to irrelevance (we can but hope) while labour tussle with the other emerging opposition parties in the usual way.

Totally disagree with Rory about it being harder to win as an extreme party in “first past the post”. An extreme party can actually overachieve in FPTP if there’s a variety of parties and a mixed result across the board, whereas a system like Australia with preferences really ensures that non centrist parties struggles.
@davidbrown4849
@davidbrown4849 7 дней назад
It's compulsory voting that counts against extremists in Oz - most low-engagement punters don't want the political outliers. If you are so inclined you can give a first preference to an extremist knowing that your vote is not wasted via your second and subsequent preference. Under FTTP an extremist _can_ get home when all the moderates score a similar number - which looks like the seat Farage is contesting.
@daveb3987
@daveb3987 7 дней назад
@@davidbrown4849 yes indeed. Both preferences and compulsory voting help big time in Aus. You literally end up with the most preferred candidate from every single eligible voter. What would be really great is if you put aside the the football and election theatrics of Ed Davy to devote more time to talking about what is happening in Gaza, and has been happening for the last 77 years. Today's news could be the beginning of an all out conflict with Lebanon, of which we'll have front rows seats. I'd love to see Rory and Alastair appliying the same level of investigative journalistic detail on this issue as Owen Jones does on his channel. He's brining us the truth, albeit uncomfortable, which is probably why he has over half a million subscribers. People are fed up with polititians/political commentors skirting around the truth and avoiding uncomfortable realties that don't play well with party political agendas. Surely we can move beyond this when people are suffering the worst horrors of genocide. If, as Israel's allies, we get dragged into an all out conflict, ignoring the realities of the genocide in Gaza to safegaurd a few more votes for a particular party may well be at the expense of us all.

I have been considering voting for Reform and your arguments about his policies being fantasy are not landing as you would want. The reason i am drawn to Reform is because they appear to be the only party who want to do something about the extremely high levels of immigration. The government appears incapable of reducing immigration and I suspect they don't want to as it keeps wages low. Nigel is our voice when neither labour nor the tories represent us, and that is why people will vote for him and not care whether his sums add up.

They complain about it, yet have no realistic plan to deal with it. The easiest thing in the world is to stand on the outside and throw stones. Then you've got the fact he hasnt been around for that long, disgraceful. and to top it all off, he hasnt really done anything, maybe the smoking ban? you know rulers in this country have died for almost being half as bad as one of these things. its one of the many reasons no one will fight for this country. at best its not a country anymore, its a shopping mall. call me a smug elistist, but no one is is going to charge into battle screaming "FOR THE BENTALLS CENTRE!!!!!!!!" for the rest of you reading this comment.
