How to control USB MIDI hardware with an iPad (Gadget, Cubasis2, NanoStudio2, Beatmaker 3).
The iPad is one of the best mobile DAW option today. Still it is really a game changer when the iPad takes control of hardware synthesizers and drum machines. One SUPER feature of the iPad using USB compatible MIDI hardware is the naming of the devices. They simply appear with their real names. It makes selecting MIDI in and out real easy.
In this video I'll show you how to setup MIDI in and out for external USB synthesizers using Korg Gadget, Steinberg Cubasis 2, Blip interactive Nanostudio 2 and Intua Beatmaker 3.
If you have an USB MIDI hardware, test it with the iPad and go see if it is in the list of USB MIDI hardware natively compatible to iPad. www.nu-trix.co... . If it is not please ad the info about your device!

Great suggestion! Kinda knew this in the back of my mind, but now I'll make it a habit to try the USB first, then the MIDI. Fewer cables, less to worry about.

I run an almost 100% Roland rig. One of the Biggest current criticisms of Roland is the fact that none of there stuff is Class Compliant. Apple products can't recognize them due to this fact. Roland's products run System Exclusive only, so you have to use Roland programs only. A bit frustrating to most people that use a DAW set up. I'm running a hardware only setup, so it doesn't bother me in the least. The sound that a lot 9f their synths make is incredible. I have a JP-8000 as well as 2 Alpha Junos, some of the boutiques, an old MC-303 And the new MC-707 as well as the TR-8. I know one of the. Complaints about the 707 is that it's not class Compliant either. But to each his own. I'm happy with my setup. Keep up the informative videos NuTrix! See you on here soon! Cheers!

Hey Nutrix, thanks for all the great content. I'm new to synths but completely hooked! Glad though for the many options on iPad keeping me out of debt getting hardware. I did however get a Modal CraftSynth 2.0 as my first hardware and it shows up on iPad if connected via USB and actually is a great little MIDI controller because it has so many knobs and shift functions so it sends different CCs.

This video could not come at a better time,. I just invested some money on used gear but I don’t have a brain to control my devices. But I do have an iPad, MacBook Air and Mini. I too have found my Roland gear (MC 101 and TR6S) aren’t recognized unless I set the 101 to generic mode. Going to look at your website and do some more testing today to see if I can use the iPad with AUM or Audiobus to be the brains until my wallet heals and can get a dedicated piece of hardware. Thank you!

I know my roland mc-707 shows up on my ipad using a powered usb hub connection to AUM ... but you have to first enable the MIDI out on the USB port and change the System Setting "USB Driver" to GENERIC, MIDI sync out is ON, track channel is set to correct MIDI channel. Unit E has some great short videos showing how to do this on the 707. So is it out of the box showing up? I'd say no. But with a few global parameter changes, yes. I really do prefer devices that just work with USB out of the box, without any drivers, aka class compliant.
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix Год назад
You are right. But I understand why Roland does it this way. By default it has the complete USB features activated (need drivers) and it can be change to class compliant (simplified USB features) for long term usability even after the drivers will stop being updated .

a question: is it possible to use an iPad as a midi controller / keybord for an iPad? Let me explain, I would like to use an old iPad as a midi keyboard, to control the app to make music on another iPad, is it possible?
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 3 года назад
Yes. 2 ways to do it: 1- you need 2 MIDI interface (one for each iPad) and run them like to MIDI devices. 2 - you use MIDI over network and run MIDI on Wifi or Bluetooth between the 2 iPads. Could be less stable if your in a place with interference or on a busy network.

Now comes the issue. The interface does not send midi clock to the gear, witch I find very disappointing. Is it possible to send midi clock over usb to my machines? Great setup buddy, I do the same, but I use a 2in2out midi usb interface to connect gadgets to a nord rack2x and a volca beats, then usb to the Behringer crave (arrived yesterday). And 2 usb keyboards because I like using both hands :-) Then WiFi synch with gadgets on an iPad mini, which I only use as carrier for my vocoder (I love kraftwerk :-)) Only problems are: 1) I am not able to send the clock to the volca beats and the crave, so I can use them only as sound module. 2) I can only use 3 channels on the nord rack. If I use 4 the midi freezes...annoying...but I still have lots of fun :-)
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 4 года назад
Cool setup! The volca Beats MIDI IN is connected to which MIDI out? When you say “then USB to the Crave” how is that USB connected ? A USB hub that is connected to the iPad? If it’s MIDI channel 4 freezes from the Nord rack it is usually because it is retransmitting something and you get a MIDI loop. Check your setting specific for the channel 4. Hope this helps.
@francescoadorno9891
@francescoadorno9891 4 года назад
Nu-Trix The Synth Guy thanks for replying. Yes i have a 4 ports usb hub connected to the ipad. It is connected to the crave, to the midi 2in2out, an oxigen61 and a novation 25slmk. The 2 midi outs of the midi hub go to volca beats and nord rack. I think I have resolved the clock problem with Audiobus3 + the synth tool, an app from Behringer (as I said I just got the crave yesterday and still finding my way through it). I will look at the midi settings for the nord rack. Thing is that only gadgets gives me that problem. Flmobile and beat maker have no problems handling all 4 channels...but gadgets is so great, you know...:-)

It is a personal choice . When people want to have more routing options they go for AUM (almost modular) and if they want to have a more traditional DAW experience they stay in Cubasis.

Hi, with the ipadOS 14 released recently, I get a message of" this device is not supported by the Ipad" when connected to my midi keyboard, it does have power by itself, and used to work fine. Now with the latest update, it does not. Does the powered USB hub would resolve it?. I've read the IpadOs 14 actually raises the power treshold for connecting stuff to the ipad.

Hey there! Is it possible for me to route audio and MIDI from an app in my iPad (the Koala app, for example) to the MX-1 or TR-8? One thing to route music through, but another to have it sync to MIDI. Thanks, sir; informative video here.
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 3 года назад
Because the MX-1 and TR-8 both need a driver for a computer (or iPad) to work and none exist for the iOS or iPadOS., you will need a dedicated audio and midi interface compatible to iPadOS. It has to be USB class compliant. Most of the audio interface for iPad do not have MIDI. I use the Roland Rubix 22 with my iPad 2 combo ins (line or preamp), 2 outs and MIDI IN and OUT.

I have the Zoom U-44 plugged into the USB-C port on the iPad and it’s found. I have Koala running, but there doesn’t seem to be any obvious setting to have it talk with the TR-8. What am I missing? Thanks!
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 3 года назад
Tour physical Connection seans to be right. Now it would be a MIDI configuration setting. What is it you what exactly? The TR-8 controlling Koala? Then check that they both use the same MIDI channel. If you want the Koala to be play in sync with the TR-8 then one of the two must be MIDI Clock master and the other has to follow it.
@velanche
@velanche 3 года назад
@@Nu-trix Indeed, I’d like Koala to play in sync with the TR-8, but there isn’t a setting built into the app itself. I’ve been told that I may have to do it via AUM, which I never really used before. I was hoping that since my iPad Pro is connected to the U-44, that somehow its MIDI connection would help aid locking Koala in time with the TR-8 somehow.

You're the perfect person to help me out with a few questions I know won't be too difficult for you to answer. First of all, you can add Peak and the Hydra are supportive with the iPad to answer your question :) Question: I am getting a Keystep Pro and I want to use both that and an Ipad running some apps like Fugue to control my Peak, Hydra, and microkorg. Do you have a suggestion on what best way to connect everything? Also, my Peak can receive USB midi from my iPad just fine but it doesn't seem to send it thru to other synths for my iPad to read - so I can only control that one synth. The hyrdasynth can also do this but the same issue. So I'm guessing I need that hub right? Thanks for any help.

@Nu-trix

@@GrootsieTheDog You will have to use the KEystep as the MIDI source and then decide where to end it.
@GrootsieTheDog
@GrootsieTheDog 3 года назад
@@Nu-trix Yes, I know that, thx. I was asking how you would use both the iPad and the keystep as a controller at the same time. but independent of each other. I am guessing that I would need to basically split up the usb from the iPad into the usb connections of the hydra and peak and then midi 5 pin daisy chain the keystep. But I was wondering if there might be another way.
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 3 года назад
@@GrootsieTheDog the main problem is the fact that most device are made to use USB MIDI just to exchange with one computer and make that computer the center of the MIDI patching. If you can setup inside your DAW the complete routing for your rig than perfect. If not, you might have to set it up so your IPad is a dedicated Hardware sequencer among other MIDI devices and use classic 5PIN DIN MIDI. You will then need some sort of MIDI patchbay or interface to interconnect all the MIDI devices .

Too bad all these Roland products have those proprietary drivers, be it for USB audio or midi. There is no real technical reason why they don't present class compliant interfaces via their firmware. Hopefully Roland will at least add generic mode like on some of their synths (Juno-DS), to allow iOS devices to communicate with their hardware.
