macmost.com/e-2953 When you download something in Safari, another browser, or Mail, it is saved to the Downloads folder by default. But you can change that to another location or have it prompt you each time.

Hey Gary, I've come across your channel countless times and wanted to finally say how much I appreciate your videos. At a time when google is no longer useful for quick direct answers this is especially valuable. Not only do I find what I need but I even get tips that I didn't know I needed afterwards. TY!

So helpful. Sometimes I’ve opened a file in downloads, saved with the name and folder I want it in, then later I find there’s a redundant duplicate file in the downloads folder just taking up space.

Hi Gary! Your videos are always quite informative and structured. Thanks a ton. Could you please tell if there is an option available to only "view" the pdf file in Safari when one clicks on a link, even if the website permits to only download the file once the link is clicked? I thought when one is not sure if the file needs to be downloaded for later use, not downloading the file into the Mac is just a way to avoid the clutter. Any clue on this will be quite useful. Many thanks.

No. If the website has set it up as a download, then there's no option but to download it. Shouldn't come up often though.

My Mac just filled up I'm using google browser. I have icloud drive. I do all my recording projects in icloud and only used 1% so far. I'm thinking about moving my download folder in folder into icloud. Most of the stuff in my download folder is for my recording daw

As always Gary, a great video. I've noticed that something downloaded to my Desktop Downloads, I can't recall from where, an App maybe. Is there a way to configure OSX that all downloads go to the same location selected within Safari?
@macmost
@macmost 9 месяцев назад
Yes. This video is about exactly that. For that one file you probably selected to have it download to that location from the context menu, maybe?

Thank You Gary for these informative videos. I Have a quick question though. I don't know how it happened but my mac is using a dropbox downloads folder and I can't figure out how to make it go back to the downloads folder for my system folder on my hard drive. also How will my iphone know where to place images when I want to airdrop it to the mac? They currently go to the same Dropbox Downloads folder that appears on the left side of any new finder window. Thanks again.
@macmost
@macmost 8 месяцев назад
Perhaps a setting in the Dropbox app? Check there. Otherwise, in Safari, Settings, General is usually where you set this for web downloads.

This is actually useful. I thought about this recently. What I download files on my iPhone normally it asks me, and I select Dropbox or iCloud Drive. Do files like direct links go to iCloud Drive by default?
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
They should go to your Downloads folder in iCloud Drive.
@thomasjcox
@thomasjcox Год назад
@@macmost I commented mid video. so I saw your explanation for why you wouldn't want Mac downloads to go to iCloud downloads. makes total sense. plus iCloud Drive downloads is accruable in finder anyway. I agree completely. I was actually thinking about this topic and you made the video I was looking for that brushed up my assumptions ! thank you !!

thanks for the video macmostvideoo, is there any way to configure this independent of the browser you are using? are you able to tweak anything via system preferences?
@macmost

No. Each browser is likely to have its own settings for this.

When doing an "Air Drop" from my phone to the iMac (Monterey) does it always have to go into the Mac's download folder, or can I make it download to an external SSD?
@macmost

Can you tell me or do a short on how to stop safari when opening asking you if you want to change your browser each time I open google? It’s sending me mad and I can’t find any settings to change it? Regards Paul

If you are referring to the Google prompt, that is not Safari, but the Google website asking you that. Just ignore it.

Where do iTunes Downloads go? I click to download a music file and I look into the "Downloads" folder and it is not there. I have no idea where it has gone. Grrrr....
@DirtTrackZac
@DirtTrackZac 10 месяцев назад
Hey Gary big fan here, however from my experience even if you have to set to “Downloads folder” as soon as you select a separate more specific folder (ie case by case) it now will default to the last folder chosen. Again this is despite having the “Downloads” folder set as the destination This happens so often and I lose files because they get put into obscure research folders. Any thoughts on this? Ever experience it? Know of a solution?
@macmost
@macmost 10 месяцев назад
If you Control+Click on a download link, you should see the normal download option which should go to the default location. Same for if you just click the link. But there is also the Download Linked File As... option which will remember your last custom location.
@ndhuy92
@ndhuy92 2 месяца назад
Can you share how to set 2 or more download folders as destination? Not only 1 in Safari.
@macmost
@macmost 2 месяца назад
You can only have one. If you had two, how would Safari know which to use? But you can always switch, or specify on a per-file basis as I show.

Sure I can manually tell the browsers where to download... but when I click the Downloads link in the Favorites in the Finder, it still goes to the "old" downloads folder. How do I change where this link points?
@macmost
@macmost 6 месяцев назад
If you aren't using that folder, then remove it from Favorites. Add others that you DO use, including the folder you are using for Downloads if that is your goal.

Unreal how annoying certain things are. Google browser decided to ask WHERE TO DOWNLOAD FOR EVERY FILE. No matter what I do. ( Location is SET. ) ( ask where to save each file before downloading is SET TO OFF ) ( show downloads when they are done SET TO OFF ) Yet, IT KEEPS ASKING WHERE TO DOWNLOAD every single time. OUT OF THE "MAE DA FOCA" blue. What am I missing?
@macmost
@macmost 11 месяцев назад
Sounds like a bug in Chrome maybe? I'd try toggling that setting on and back to off again. Other than that, see if there is a way to report it as a bug to Chrome.
