This is a Champion generator conversion to propane intended to provide you with a grid down power source. If you have a champion generator conversion to propane you will have cheap reliable grid down power. This works as a Predator generator propane conversion as well as any portable generator propane conversion.
If you are a fan of Harbor Freight, this is an excellent way to perform a Predator Generator Propane Conversion !
Propane doesn't "go bad" like gasoline does so you will have a generator that will start and run when you need it if you make this simple conversion to a common and inexpensive gasoline generator.
This conversion was done with a $30 eBay Tri-Fuel conversion kit.
The installation took about 30 minutes. This is the best grid down power investment you could make for this little amount of money if you want to convert a gasoline generator to propane or natural gas.
You can buy a conversion kit like this on eBay by searching for - "New 170F Dual Fuel Carburetor GX200 LPG Conversion Kit for Generator Propane USA"
If you don't have an adjustable regulator on hand like we did, you can get one of these on eBay as well by searching for - "Propane Regulator High pressure LPG BBq gas burner stove fryer with 4 ft hose"

Its great this gentleman presents a $30 kit instead of hundreds that are elsewhere, but one can really do it for NOTHING by just connecting the natural gas line to the air filter housing with a valve to regulate the flow to a precise level.

I am a prepper and have 2 generators but they are both gasoline set up. Obviously not the best in a grid down situation. I store propane and sometimes power is off but Nat. gas is available so this is just what I need! I like your site content available as well. Subscribed now. Thanks so much for the good quality and informative video! Much appreciated! Revision....forget Ebay and spending just $30.00 or even $50.00 dollars unless you get REAL lucky. One of the best videos I have seen for taking something apart and putting it back together. Too many folks just say, “Well, we put it back together.” And they don’t show how they did it. I got a chuckle when you used an electric drill to start the motor. If the power is off, then you can’t run the drill. I don’t have any battery powered drill so I’ll just have to use the pull cord method. I wish there was some kind of conversion kit to change a pull starter to an electric starter.

I have found that if it doesn't start on the first pull, it needs a tune up (Or bad fuel). I can go ahead and use the electric start on my engines but its just away to brute force a problem as opposed to fixing it. Eventually it won't start with an electric start either. IMHO

I absolutely love your presentation. I just installed my kit and I’m holding back from cutting the hose for this mod. There has to be a solution where we can make a mechanical connection. What a beast to try to start! But, I figured it out. I pressurized the line , purge the air, then shut off the regulator. It takes a few pulls to start it, it’ll run rough, then quickly open the regulator just a hair. It’ll then run nicely. The problem is is that it just takes a whisper of propane otherwise it floods immediately and pull as many times as you want you will not start.

Neil, You are correct about the whisper of propane to start sir! I did eventually go to a air fitting. Not the recommended or "legal" way to do it, but as long as I dont show it on camera... Like everything else I own mechanical tho, it requires a bit o finesse and understanding of its intricacies to make it work. Totally worth it tho! Merry Christmas! -Shane

Exactly what I needed to know. I just bought a non-inverted 4kw to backup my inverted 3.5kw. I just received the dual fuel carb (~$7). As per your advise, I have ordered a new lpg regulator. The carb was very easy to swap. Should know in a day or two how it performs. Damn regulator was twice as much as the carb 🙄. I have also weighed the LPG tank and will weigh again after testing. This carb upgrade will not work on the inverter generator as that has a stepper motor controlling the throttle. I am still searching.

I was a GM mechanic and did mostly engine rebuilding or replacements, One day I see all my coworkers standing around a block on the stand, It was motor that ran on LP, It had 25k miles on it, None of us had ever seen an engine so immaculate . This motor looked as if it had just been assembled, This made me understand how dirty gasoline is Compared to bottled gas, Plus propane can sit in your garage for ten years and doesn't go bad.

It really is amazing with the may other fuels that have measurable benefits over gas, how liquid gasoline became the standard motor fuel simply because it is easier to pour liquid fuel than refill a propane or nat gas tank. "The spring that aggravates you" is there to take the 'slop' out of the governor's speed control adjustments - especially when the little hole wears a little. Since the frequency and quality of the alternating current is dependent upon engine speed it's not just something to aggravate you, but rather is an important component of the governor.

Love the propane setup but is easier to go to natural gas and forget about swapping out tanks etc. Went to Ebay did not find a natural gas set up or a tri-gas-propane-natural gas set up.

I squeezed a hose from Natural Gas Line right where the intake is with a a gate valve i had left over from a remodel AND IT WORKS FINE for only a few bucks of hose!

Well...I leaned out the jump door of a C-141 in-flight without a parachute to tell a jumpmaster that our drop zone was held my the enemy once too... but it was a dangerous thing to do and could have resulted in my death if something had gone wrong. It also resulted in me and my Ranger Battalion commander getting called to the carpet of an Airforce commanding generals office to get my butt chewed right properly for risking my life and his career. The point is... lots of stuff works fine... all the way up until it doesn't. I wouldn't personally advise ANYONE to introduce a virtually unlimited supply of natural gas to a generator in the way you have described, start the generator and then leave it unsupervised for ANY amount of time. Now, you are presumably a full grown man and I wont tell you what to do, AND I do personally often follow my favorite old mantra "Safety third" but I would encourage you to think that one through a bit. I used to have a friend many years ago who made carb conversions for automobiles but I haven't been involved with that side of things myself (yet). So I don't have any guidance for you there. I do know that there is a whole subculture that LIVES that side of things AND the Gasification side as well. Check out Wayne Keith and many others on youtube for "gasification" or "woodgas" power alternatives... You might really be intrigued by that angle on alt power. ( I know I am!) So glad to see you did it right and used an on demand regulator which came on the new carburetor! I’ve seen too many people show how to just poke in a hose somewhere, and let uncontrolled gas flow to make it run!!! They fail to know or inform the people watching that this is highly dangerous and could kill you and your family!!! And the generator governor won’t regulate engine speed under changing loads!!!

@@AHandleOnThings I have tried a similar carburetor on an old Tecumseh 10hp generator. I just used the regular on the new carburetor because it won’t bolt up to the manifold without an adapter. It runs but surges so I’m going to drill in a fitting further downstream and see if that works, if not I’ll make an adapter plate and bolt the whole new carburetor up to it

Congratulations for such a easy understandable video for a petrol generator gas conversion, I'd wish u to answer 4 questions. First, is it so easy to start the gas-fed motor with the pulling cord as with a power drill as u do?, second, what's the gas running power loss compared to petrol?, third, does it tune fuel dose quick and smoothly face to sudden big power consumption changes, and fourth, engine cold can be gas started directly or previously needs be petrol started?, thanks

Salvadore, Thanks a bunch for taking the time to comment! Here are the answers to your questions (as best as I can do) 1) It is the same starting effort for gasoline or propane. I prefer to use the drill (especially for camera) because it is easier and looks better than pull starting 2) Power loss, I have no way to measure the power loss but I have heard that 15-20% loss is to be expected when running on propane instead of gasoline and I see no reason to question or doubt that estimate. 3) The machine runs normally under load and tunes to a smooth run very easily. No real difference from gasoline operation in my experience. 4) you could start with gas and warm the engine up and then shut off gas and switch over to propane but I have not done this since I haven't had a need to. Mine fires up easily on propane so I dont really use gasoline in it anymore. It is nice however knowing that the option to run on gasoline is still preserved! Have a super evening! Unfortunately this kit only services motors up to about 5-6hp... There are many other kits out there that may fit your machine tho. The change out is going to be largely the same process. Cheers, -Shane

some propane regulators have a "Excess Flow" spring loaded check valve. If you open the tank valve too fast it shuts off down to just a trickle. Then you have to shut the tank valve and bleed off any pressure and the reopen the tank valve "slowly".

JP, The best way to see if you are going to be a fit is to pull the carb and have a look at the gasket. If the gasket on the kit photos matches pretty closely you should have a great chance of having the right one. And I do have a Champion 3500 as well that is a number of years old and it did use the same kit. Good luck ! -Shane

I wanted to ask about the drill start modified socket you used. Curious about how to avoid kickback if starting with a drill. would appreciate your insights.

Jason, What we did was we took a deep well (spark plug) socket ( it doesn't have to be a deep well) that fit the nut on the flywheel for the generator and we put a little insulation inside the socket to partially fill the socket and then welded them together. The insulation keeps the epoxy from running out in the next step. Then we filled the socket with epoxy thru the square drive part of the socket until the square drive hole of the socket had just enough epoxy to keep the socket driver from engaging solidly enough to lock into the socket. The socket drive that we put in the drill chuck catches the socket enough to drive the motor but when the motor takes off it just pops off no problem. If you need to modify the fit just use a dremel tool and grind out a little epoxy at a time till you get the fit you like. We put just a little blue thread locker on the nut to keep it from loosening up when the motor starts up and pulls free of the drill. The socket stays attached to the nut and does not mess up the balance at all. and anytime you choose to go back to a pull rope drive just pop the socket in reverse with an impact driver and it comes off. Then you put on another nut that fits and pop the pull rope flywheel back on and you are in business. Be sure to get a matching nut for the generator from the hardware store tho... it is almost always a metric thread. We use a common electric drill to do the job because it was handy, but a battery operated drill that has some snort does the job just fine too. -Shane

Jack, Thanks for the comment we appreciate you! The truth is I'm not sure on your generator... It is right on the edge of what this particular kit is rated at. If it were me I would take a chance for $30 bucks though... The worst that could happen is it doesn't fit and you have a kit to trade or sell to someone else or buy a craigslist generator for. Propane applications always want a regulator at the tank as well. I'm not saying you couldn't get by without it, but all of the instructibles you will find require it. And with this particular kit, in my experience, the generator just wont start without the heavily limited supply of propane from the first regulator. Have a great weekend, and stay safe! -Shane

So my generator will only run when the bleed valve is depressed, and it runs rough, am i to understand that it's still too rich? I was thinking i had a vacume leak, not enough fuel getting into the system, but neither adjustment, reducing or adding, lpg before the on demand regulator allowed the machine to idle on its own. I am certain the regulator gives fuel when a vaccum is pressent, and i've played with 3 different styles of these carb regulator combos, non have given me this trouble so far. Any help would be apppreciated

Fitch, It would be impossible for me to troubleshoot your situation without being there, but in my experience on my machines, I had to keep cutting the propane flow back until they ran clean... and I was very surprised at how much I had to cut it back before I got there. I’ve got a similar setup on my Troy Bilt 13hp generator. I cannot get it started, figured it could be the Torch spark plug, so I changed it out for an NGKBRE6S, still will not start. Motor has an electric start, Is it possible, that the motor is not turning over fast enough to create a strong enough vacumn to pull the propane into the motor? Watching your video, I noticed you use a drill to turn your generator over, do you think that would maybe work with my Troy Bilt. Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thx much.

Shane, I still haven’t had any luck starting my setup. A question hopefully you’ll have the answer to. I open my tank all the way, then my HP regulator, but I never hear any gas nor do I get any gas too the carb. I can turn my HP regulator open at least 3 full turns and at that point I can hear the gas, and I mean lots of gas, so I’ve been immediately turn it off, now the question I have is that normal for the HP regulator now the question I have is it normal for that HP regulator to open that many turns? I was thinking maybe I have a bad regulator. However if it’s normal for it to open that far, maybe I just need to play with it more. My concern was that much gas rushing someplace could cause an explosion. Any help/comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have a 3600 watt gas generator still new in box that I would love to convert to run off natural gas. I was going to do it and initially only came across the models you mentioned that are like $200 and didn't think it was worth it, but at this price point it would be great. I noticed that the conversion kits seem to reference either being 2 KW or 4.5-5 KW. Is it Ok to use the 4.5-5KW or does it have to be sized very accurately?

Glen, Unless you grossly oversize the kit you are going to be good. I wouldn't suggest cobbling in a kit that is designed for a 10kw into a 3.5kw machine for instance, but you will be in fine shape using a 4.5-5kw kit as long as it matches up. As to not being worth it, I have to tell ya, after using these gen sets converted, I would NEVER go back to a gasoline only system. Have a super day and stay safe! -Shane

this particular kit only works on smaller engines than what you have, however, there are other kits on the market that will indeed work for 10hp. As for the propane or nat gas... if you are going to use natural gas straight from the house, you will want to have a regulated pigtail made/installed. We have more experience with propane and that is as far as our comfort level goes due to liability issues. Absolutely it is. As long as you get the pressure reduced which will likely require an additional regulator off the big tank. Its really not a whole lot different than a pigtail supply for a BBQ grill.

I dont know which kit might work for your carb, (it may work with this kit as I have done conversions on WEN generators before with these kits) the best thing to do is to pull the carb and have a look at the mounting surface and gasket the manufacturer uses... Then look on ebay for a unit with a similar footprint and gasket design and you will be in good shape. Optionally you could get a piece of aluminum and manufacture a simple adapter plate. Usually the carb throat is the same size and the only thing you would have to adapt for would be the bolt pattern so it isn't too complicated just a piece of aluminum with a few properly placed holes in it. I should do a video on making an adapter plate probably...that's a good idea! Gasket paper can be bought over the counter at most auto parts stores so that is easy to arrive at too. Let us know how you come out in finding one! Best regards, -Shane

Well, I have heard of people putting an oil drip on things that had been 2 stroke that they converted to propane but I never tried it myself... I have considered trying to do a chainsaw that way off of a small tank but haven't gotten that far yet. I think "MR Teslonian" may have done some of that on his channel... The regulator I used didn't even say on the packaging which it was. The top pressure of the regulator doesn't matter though, as long as it will close off to zero it should work for you since you are looking for it to give you adjustability on the low end and not a max flow amount.
