Converting an antique rifle from an obsolete rimfire cartridge to a reloadable centerfire, is an interesting project. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, converts a Remington #1 Rolling Block Sporting rifle from 32 Rimfire to 32-20 Winchester Centerfire.

This is EXACTLY what I am in the process of doing! Stumbled upon your video just after I purchased (from Midway, of course) a chambering ream in 32-20 with the intent of converting a really nice little .32 rimfire rolling block I bought at auction. I'd reamed the chamber by hand ( just as you showed), but haven't yet converted the breech block. Now I know exactly how to do so! Thank you!!!

@@michaelstrang8544 Yup, with experience, the right tools, and the Power of Editing. I actually like watching his videos and order from Midway quite iften. Excellent quick shipping and great CS. I wouldn't mind having a rimfire bolty ir lever action relined and rechambered specifically to .22 Short.

Yes indeed. Having done similar conversions myself, I can say that his knowledge and experience made the process much easier. I just stumbled through it and made it work, but it took much more time and effort. But that's how you learn.

In my humble opinion, only a true master should ever attempt to convert a rimfire rifle to center-fire. That's some heavy-duty work right there.

Love these videos. Even though i may never do the work depicted, i still learn a lot. I plan to get a RB someday soon, hopefully in 7x57, although 43 Spanish might be feasible. So it was nice to see the mechanicals of the rifle. A conversion like this would be a fun light rifle.

It's too bad that the rolling blocks aren't still produced. A lot of people like a simple single-shot rifle and end up having to go with a break action instead. For target shooting though, a rolling block is a better design since it allows the rifle to stay on target when reloading whereas a break action requires you to remove the rifle from the rest / shooting position, break it open, and then reload.

Conversion to .32 Long Colt might be a better option than going to .32-20, as nice as that round is. The rim diameters are very close, the extractor wouldn't need to be modified. .32 Long Colt ammo is readily available. I'll be looking at one of these in a few days, and while I have about 90 rounds of .32 Short rimfire ammo I am loath to shoot it, the stuff is very expensive.

Ok, I enjoy your videos a lot but four minutes into this one I have a question; after drilling, tapping, and chamfering the original firing pin hole could you use a pipe plug instead of a screw? My thoughts are that it could be installed flush and would eliminate the next step of milling off the screw head. Now I'm going to watch the rest of the video to see why that wouldn't work, lol.

Hello Larry 👋 wondering if it's possible to convert a deteriorated 30-30 1894 barrel and install a 25-35 barrel instead ?
@ashethedivine
@ashethedivine 8 лет назад
I would have to ask about the chamber pressure and safety of this conversion. The .32 rimfire was originally a black powder round with relatively low pressures especially compared to the .32-20. How do make certain that reaming more material from the chamber that it will handle the chamber pressures? If so, maybe a .32 h&r rechamber would be a bit more reasonable.
@jsgktr93
@jsgktr93 8 лет назад
I wish he would have gone into some depth on that. If you don't know, though, gunsmiths have specs for minimum wall thicknesses for specific calibers. I he knows the barrel thickness from the original round, as he didn't alter that. This new round would certainly achieve higher pressures, though, but apparently he knows the barrel is thick enough for that.

.32-20 Is also a black powder cartridge.
@0neDoomedSpaceMarine
@0neDoomedSpaceMarine 5 лет назад
One could also handload a .32-20 case with blackpowder to match the pressures of a .32 Rimfire, a cartridge which otherwise is nearly impossible to handload.
@ifitsfreeitsforme1852
@ifitsfreeitsforme1852 4 года назад
The action on the gun he modified is more than adequate to withstand the pressure generated by a factory load 32-20.
@samsheeran6905

you can calculate the minimum wall thickness, chamber pressure, and force applied to the breech face, and then when you know that the shear strength of the pins holding the hammer and breech block

@0neDoomedSpaceMarine 3 года назад
Not that trivial to produce rimfire cartridges on your own, also they're not particularly suitable for reloading. .32-20 Winchester casings are readily available still, and you can reload them many times, so it would make it a lot easier to shoot this old gun.

He's from Missouri originally and was stationed in Texas and Arkansas when he was in the Air Force. That might have something to do with the accent. Thanks to my time in the military and having been stationed / worked in quite a few places around the US (and world), my accent is completely screwed up. When I go back to my hometown, I notice them having an accent wheres I didn't when I was younger. And they say that I now have an accent, but it's not easy to place. If I spent any time in Scotland though, my accent would probably morph to where I couldn't even understand *myself* ... :)
