In this video we show you how to convert your wood burning fireplace at home to a gas fireplace. You will need to tap into a gas line turning off the gas first and as we show you in the video cutting pipe down to size to fit into the space going to the fireplace. The gas fireplace kit came with the logs and all the connectors but my dad had to buy the pipe and pipe sealant he calls the goop in the video. I hope the info help out, thank you for your time and thank you for watching.

Wow. You should have used galvanized steel pipe for outdoors. When those crappy small pieces of wood rot away how will the pipe stay secured.

You did a good job on everything except the wood you used to strap the pipe - I would have used unistrut

I have this kind of gas log in our house, it does nothing, not hot at all. Can you please teach me how to improve? If i installed a chimney damper would that help?

What about flu, a fan to direct heat out and a thermostat to turn fire off and on automatically?
@Tankomas
@Tankomas 2 года назад
Do you still need to keep the flue open when in use? Also does the pilot light need to stay on like a water heater
@briankuhn7396
@briankuhn7396 2 года назад
The flue absolutely needs to stay open. Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colorless gas that can lead to illness and even death. It is a byproduct of burning natural gas, propane, kerosene, and wood. Please be safe.

Yes has to be open

Can a blower be added to that gas fireplace? Seems like a waste of money to have Gad being made to make fire but not get the benefits of the heat
@rafdjislampura6454
@rafdjislampura6454 Год назад
It will generate lot of radiant heat. Fan will cause CO2 and CO blown in the living area instead of going out of chimney.
@carlos52321
@carlos52321 5 месяцев назад
Yes use a gas insert with fresh air vent specially made with blower already in it.

Can you still burn regular wood if you take out the fake wood ?
@SwampDonkey64
@SwampDonkey64 6 месяцев назад
Only if the gas line is removed completely from fire place.

I noticed you didn't have to add a vent stack. Are those ventless gas logs?? I have and use a wood burning fireplace. I want to convert to gas. What kind of logs is safe??
@rafdjislampura6454
@rafdjislampura6454 Год назад
I believe they are imitation logs made using ceramic material. They retain heat and to radiant heat transfer efficiency of the install and ofcourse add to esthetics. You still have to have the chimney or some sort of arrangement to get exhaust the gas combustion product like CO and CO2.
@rafdjislampura6454
@rafdjislampura6454 Год назад
Converting an existing wood burning stove so it's assumed that it has a chimney with a damper to control the exhaust.
@carlos52321
@carlos52321 5 месяцев назад
Existing chimney can use any gas log. If you don’t have an open chimney then use direct vent.

That looks so ugly with you nailing blocks of wood to your stucco home. There's got to be a better way to install that pipe. It just looks horrible . Like a non professional installed it. Don't like it at all.

Nice video, thanks for posting! I have 2 fireplaces I would like to convert like this in my grandfathers house, he worked for the gas company so he ran all the lines in the house and he ran a LOT of lines and left shut off valves where more lines could be started. 1 fireplace in the basement would only need about 10ft of line ran as I can connect almost right behind this fireplace in laundry room, and the other fireplace which is on the main floor (directly above the basement fireplace) would probably need about 10ft of line also. What im wondering is if I could use that yellow flex type gas line they sell now? (as I do not have my grandfathers skill) ..... The key thing you have near the fireplace on inside wall, is that a on/off convenience valve? Could I put a on/off valve inside each fireplace there the gas lines come in? Looking forward to your reply, thank you!

So will give you an answer since I don't see it. I usually.advise people to not do gas on their own unless they know gas a bit, leaks are deadly and the easiest thing that can be unpermitted and cause you to have an insurance claim denial in case of fire. That said, the 10 ft can probably be done with flex, and some codes actually call it out for the last segment between pipe and let's something huge like a water heater, in case of quakes to allow some movement. The best practice is to continue what your grandfather laid, and it's probably black iron. The big box stores will actually cut and thread the stuff when you buy pipe from there, so measure at least three times and use dope correctly. The last segment can be yellow flex pipe. The gas line should be grounded to Earth also, and it is probably in the segment your grandfather set. The last part is actually doing a pressure leak test, which is unfortunately skipped in the video. It's a critical part where you measure the line pressure and make sure it doesn't leak when isolated. It's the most critical thing about a safe install. Good luck!

Did you do anything special to the chimney, existing fire box or the damper?
