When choosing between Google Slides and PowerPoint, pick whichever your client or team is most comfortable with using.
Although you can easily flip between the two programs, you will lose functionality when you convert PowerPoint to Google Slides (or vice versa). That's why it's best to use pick the program that everyone is most comfortable with and stick with it.

Yes, there are some things that don't convert the way you want them, so it's always good to double and TRIPLE check your files when converting either way (Google to PowerPoint or PowerPoint to Google).

I have two questions that I would like to resolve: (1) If I have a free Gmail account and I convert a PowerPoint presentation to Google Slides, are the templates preserved? (2) Do you have any videos on creating templates in Google Slides? THANK YOU

Hi there and thanks for the comment. As for converting PPT to Google Slides, yes the template will be preserved, although there are some things that will not carry over. For example, as of now, GS only has placeholders for text or images (no video, charts, etc.). So those will be converted over, likely to just text. And right now I don't have any videos on creating GS templates, but I've put this on my list to make so keep an eye out. Thanks for the great suggestion!

Thank you for this tutorial. I request an advanced solution if you can help: Is there a way to convert multiple separate PPT files to GOOGLE SLIDES AT ONCE? as we know, Google Slides doesn't take up storage in Google Drive. Is there a code or Google App script available for that? e.g. I have 25 different PPT files in my Google Drive folder and I need to convert ALL 25 separate PPTs to 25 separate GOOGLE SLIDES AT ONCE. I'm Thankful for the incredible insight you are willing to share.

why sometimes sound isn't supporting in the google slides when imported from PPT?

Hi Shumaila - hm, what kind of sound are you using? Just an MP3 file sitting on the slide? Or are you using sound as part of transitions? You're right that a lot of things get lost when you convert, and sometimes you have to add the sound back in yourself.

For most of us, just go from 2:25 to 3:24. Check to see what converted and adjust accordingly. (Thanks, but I can see that brevity is not a goal here.)

Hi Lori - It depends on the font you're using. If it's a universal font, then it should preserve. However, if it's a Mac only or Windows only font, then it won't. Sadly there's no way to force it.

In that case, I would break your presentation into multiple presentations and then convert them. It's kind of annoying but see if that gets you past the error and let me know.

Does existing PowerPoint audio records transfer over to Google Slides? I tried this importing...and I noticed my audios didn't transfer over.

I do not believe they do. Any of the more "advanced" or newish PowerPoint features usually don't convert well to Google Slides. Google Slides prides itself on only have the "basic" PowerPoint features they believe people need (and they do not cover any of the other stuff). This is why when building a presentation for a client, it is important to know what format they want to present in, and build the deck using the software.

I am having the same issue!! It will open the file as a PPT, but won't open it in Google Slides!! Any tips on what to do?

Hi Nataliya. Well, the easiest thing is to see how big your PPT file is, and then save it in chunks. So part 1, part 2, etc. and import the slides to Google slides, part by part. Otherwise, you'll have to spend a lot of time reducing your file size... Hope that helps!

I clicked Keep Original Theme, but my powerpoint is still importing at a smaller size than the Google Slides (there's extra white space around and there's a standard slide template with title and text blocks BEHIND the image of my pwp slides.) Is there a way to do this so I don't have to go resize and fix 85 slides??

Hi there. Hm, not sure exactly what's happening for you. Can you detail the steps you're taking? I'm not having this issue. You may need to check the dimensions of your original PPT slides. The default Slides dimensions are 10X5.63 whereas the default PPT ones at 13.33x7.5.

Hi Olu! Unfortunately, there is no way to edit them once you paste them in. You're correct - they remain as pictures. So you'll either need to edit the original PPT chart and re-paste it in, or you can create the chart natively in Google sheets.

I'm not sure exactly what is happening in your case, but I would first double check that what you are importing to Google Slides is a .PPTX file, and not a .POTX file (which is a PowerPoint template file type) or a macro enabled presentation, etc. Google Slides also cannot convert a PDF of a presentation into a Google Slides doc (or not that I know of). So I would double check your file type first... if you need to save it as a different file type, just hit F12 for Save As and adjust the File Type in the dropdown. I hope that helps!

Hi Donna, I did some more research for you and found that my previous response was not correct (sorry). Below are the file types that Google does support. So, my guess is there is something within your presentation that Google doesn't like. I would start by eliminating any videos or non-native PowerPoint content as that is most likely the issue. It might be that if you remove the one piece of content that google doesn't like, then Google Slides will convert the rest of it for you. Hi Andrea. You first have to open Google slides from a web browser (you can go here: docs.google.com/presentation/u/0/) and then you have to import your PPT there, using the steps I list out in the video.

Other problems - colors revert back to default colors, and charts stacked on top of each other lined up perfectly in PPT are offset in GS. Labels on charts appear when they were removed in PPT. Not happy in this moment.

Hi Mimi - yes, it's a really poor experience. I often recreate charts natively in GS or paste them as pictures. Definitely not ideal, but that's all we can do at the moment.

Hi Siddharth - Unfortunately, a lot gets lost when converting, especially custom templates. For fonts, if it's a universal font, then it should preserve. However, if it's a Mac only or Windows only font, then it won't. Sadly there's no way to force it. What kind of formatting are you losing?

I am a teacher and I am designing digital quiz for my students. In every question, 4 options will be given. Student will have to click on one of the options. After every attempted question, score will be calculated. At the end of the entire quiz, the score of student along with the percentage is calculated. In Microsoft Powerpoint, I am doing that using VBA code. Once I complete my Micosoft powerpoint with VBA code, when I upload it to google slide, will my VBA code still be functional..?? If not, then how can I achieve that in google slides..?? Please help me.

Great question. I'm not a VBA coder, but my guess is it will not work in Google Slides as VBA is a Microsoft programming language. I don't think there is a similar way to do this in Google slides. You would need to use a different presentation platform that allows you to upload your Google slides to it and then create that kind of interactivity.

Hi Harshil. Yes, Google will strip out all animations and transitions. So you'll have to add them back inside Google Slides. Keep in mind though that GS only has basic transitions and animations (no Morph). If those are critical to your presentation, you'll need to keep it in PPT. Hope that helps!
