Shalom Chevra,
Today, we have a special class with our very own Rabbi Moshe Chaim!
He let's the Chevra know what it takes to become a Jew. Now, to be clear, we are not encouraging anyone to convert. The Chevra are merely laying out practical steps one would take if they wholeheartedly wanted to convert to Judaism.
It is not a straight forward process and requires a lot of work for anyone who wants to convert.
There are many famous converts mentioned in both the Torah and in the Gemara (Talmud).
A few honorable mentions:
Batya (Pharaoh's daughter)
Jethro (Moses's Father-in-Law)
Ruth (Great-grandmother of King David)
The prophet Obadiah
Onkelos (Foremost translator of the Torah into Aramaic)
Rabbi Yehudah Halevi (Author of the Kuzari, a fundamental text on Jewish philosophy)
Converts have been and continue to be a big part of Judaism's continuity and it doesn't look like that's going to change any time soon.
Whether you are Jew or Gentile please take a moment an LIKE today's video! Also the Chevra doesn't discriminate, so no matter what your background or religious beliefs, if you are in pursuit of Truth and want to get the most out of your FINITE time in this world, SUBSCRIBE!!!

Excellent presentation. I began studying Judaism about 30 years ago including studying Hebrew, Yiddish, even some gemara on my own (didn't get real far with that) and only recently began attending shul on a regular basis plus finally closing my business on Saturdays, lighting candles on erev shabbat, and other things. You are absolutely correct when it comes to the effort required to really convert and while people think I should be a prime candidate to do it, I am reluctant. The blessings in my life from trying to observe shabbat just to the limited extent I do, for example, has been tremendous and definitely has drawn me closer to God but it is something I choose and am not obligated to do. Since I am past 70, a widower and did not grow up in an observant family, I honestly do not know if I could handle doing a proper conversion on my own. My only problem is that I feel a little guilty receiving the blessings without being under the obligation so I am grateful that the Jewish people have survived in spite of all the challenges and hope that I am being respectful.

I grew up Orthodox, there are several Rabbonim in my family, one is a well known Rebbe. My ex husband is a published Rabbi. I grew up in a frum family. I keep nothing. Not even Shobbos. Absolutely no connection. I work, I pay my own bills, I have some friends. I have activities, I'm busy. I keep nothing except kashrus. I was a rabbis wife. Shobbos table Friday night, the men were davening and learning every night. Now I keep nothing. It's just not there. Means nothing. I keep trying though. It meant nothing as a kid, nothing during marriage, nothing now. Sad. Just words to me.

Hashem has called me to worship HIM and only HIM. HE has given me peace in my heart and a love that is strong and forever. Hashem has also brought your video to me. You nailed it on what I have been feeling. I have been reading the Torah/Tenak along with morning and evening Shemas online daily and I watch and listen to Rabbi's lessons on RU-vid. I have been celebrating Shabbots for over a month and look forward to doing so for the rest of my life. I will be purchasing "Torah for Dummies". This decision has been a long process for me. I have left the Roman Catholic Church for all the idolatry that is practiced. Hashem is not glorified first in the Catholic faith. No priest has given me a comprehensivable reason why Hashem is not put first. Hashem is the reason why I left and I will cling onto Hashem forever. Baruch ata Hashem! Baruch ata Adonai!

You're looking for Judaism to define you. Torah for dummies? An Orthodox Rabbi would throw you out. He'd say "crazy shiksa." It's not a religion for Catholic drop outs. It's a lot of sacrifice and extreme. When anyone renounces JC I'm always thinking they want to be Jewish for opportunities.

If you want to purchase a proper book, don't buy the dummy book if you haven't already. Instead, try to find a copy of TO BE A JEW by Rabbi Hayim (Chaim) Donin if it's still in print. Tbe dummy book is not for people serious about Yiddishkeit and Jews themselves born Jewish use Rabbi Donin s book- it's old but a classic. The dummy book you can check out of the library . Google Judaica bookstores, they may be able to get it for you. Hetzlacha. (Good luck)

Thank you Rabbi for that serious advice. The way I see it, the learning doesn't stop at conversion. Conversion is a commitment to God. Someone who is not a born in jew, needs to learn much harder to change the life and traditions, as someone who is born in and grew up with it. Does my lifetime on this earth reach for the amount of new things Iam supposed to learn? I don't know. But I trust in God that he will help me to keep going, if I am weak or if I don't know what to do next. We are all born imperfect. But it is worth it to just go the way God offers us.

❤ As of around 2005, it all started…me disgusted with the religion I was born into. Honestly, since I was a child, but, I didn’t really have a choice because I didn’t know anything else and one is not given a choice. Finally…I did away with deviant worship 5,6 years ago. I began seeking Torah teachers on “RU-vid university” 😅 and joining Torah seeker groups online. I do very much want to convert and contacted a rabbi in my state; finally scheduled an appointment for an official interview after a couple phone conversations. My interview is later this month. I have one question, I’d like to ask publicly. Why are the orthodox communities in just a very few inner cities in the US maybe just a handful of cities? Where it is the most expensive to live and not able to find housing at all at times. I suppose I’ll find out during my interview. I sold everything to move near an orthodox community and I can’t find housing. I been seeking accommodations in preparation it’s been impossible. Just saying. I’m very pleased Rav Moshe Chaim shared this video. Much respect sir, thank you.

@@jackiejackie796 Orthodox communities tend to be in cities because observant Jews need to walk to shul/synagogue on Shabbos/Sabbath and Yomim Tovim/holidays. People in other religions can live scattered in country-like areas and drive to their houses of worship on sabbath and holidays. Oftentimes the housing is more affordable but would make walking onerous. There are some communities in suburbs but they tend to be more expensive as the houses are often larger. Any time Orthodox communities spring up, the housing prices always go up. This is unfortunate since not all Torah observant are wealthy.

Needing to walk on Shabbos means that dense populations are necessary. This means cities. Why so few cities? Well there are an estimated 13-16 million Jews in the world and only around 1-2 million are Orthodox. It’s ultimately a quite small community all things considered.

However, the more I learn, the more it seems that there’s ultimately only one way: To follow Torah. So if we don’t have to convert them how do proceed forward? What’s the difference between learning and applying the laws and becoming Jewish? If it’s not necessary to convert, where do we draw the line about what to observe, what not to observe?

The Jew does not know who he is. Our whole story is about knowing who we are. Man is created on the sixth day but he will never know the seventh until he knows he is the image of God. Who is God? He is good, so first we learned evil. First, we are in darkness. It has always been about the Jew and the Nations. The Jew is the Torah. Torah is the instructions to know God to learn what is good, to know that God is love and loves all of us. If the Nations love the Jew, they love Torah. Torah is our love. Our love for each other births His love. Torah is meant to be an action, "we will do". Let's do and be in love 🙏

It depends what part. If your mother’s mother’s mother was Jewish, the law holds that you are Jewish. If your mother’s father were, you are not Jewish and would need to convert. Please note though in some cases where it is difficult to prove Jewishness, you might need to complete giur l’chumra, which is conversion on a stringency in a case of doubt.

The number one problem that I have with this class is there is absolutely no source in Halacha for much of what you said. I believe we should not get off script when talking to a potential convert. Open a Shulchan Aruch and when a Ger comes to you to convert read to him what it says word for word. Of course make it part of your memory. By the way the Rambam says the opposite of what you said. That someone who comes to convert you encourage them by saying that the next world is only for the righteous who are Jewish people.

I have studied Rambam. Please see Mishnah Torah Milchamei Malachot. The Rambam poskens that non Jews who keep the Seven Noahide laws out of love and awe of God and not just because they are logical have a share in the world to come. I am not sure where you’ve gotten your source. The difference is that Jews get a higher reward, but non Jews do have a share in the world to come. What that share is…I don’t know!

Dear Rabbi: I have an important question to ask you. I am watching this on October 25, 2023, after the Hamas attack inside Israel. I see fault in Israeli politics, in the expansion of the settlements into Palestinian areas as well as the humanity of the Palestinians. Do you consider the State of Israel to be beyond reproach, the politics of Israel to be beyond reproach? Also, if a Jewish person does something antisocial, is it true that "Jewish people don't turn in other Jewish people?" A Chasidic Rabbi told me this and admonished me. I didn't think that this person should be given immunity in the Jewish community just because he was born of a Jewish mother and father. I would go talk with this Rabbi but it seems that he has moved away. This has really upset and confused my understanding about what being a Jew means. Thank you.

The origin of castes occurred later, while the gotras existed from the beginning. As far as I understand, our ancestors have been living in this region for about a thousand years. It was like a kingdom of our ancestors, and the entire area belonged to our gotra. Our ancestors' belief system at that time was different from today's Hinduism. There were five villages called Mehluon, governed democratically, similar to a modern commune. If we study this system, we find it is not present in Hinduism. Some say its origin is in Judaism. At one point, a king wanted to marry a woman from this region, but they refused. The king's arrogance led him to attack with his army, but our ancestors defeated him multiple times. So, the king resorted to a deceitful plan. He was informed about their belief system, especially their practice of not shedding blood while eating together during their sacred occasions. On one such sacred occasion, the king attacked and killed everyone present, sparing only those who were outside the village. This story is known through oral tradition. This kind of tradition is not found in Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, or Islam. It is associated with Judaism, where bread holds great sanctity as it was provided by God. In Judaism, there is a festival of bread called Shabbat, which they celebrate with great sanctity. This indicates a connection between our ancestors and Judaism. Archaeological findings of burial sites also suggest a relationship with a burial-centric religion. While there is limited evidence other than the bones, and not everyone may accept this idea, it remains a possibility based on oral traditions.

Genesis 48:19 But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his *younger brother* shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations." This is Ephraim and you will see this also in Ezekiel- Ezekiel 37:16 "And you, son of man, take for yourself one stick and write on it, 'For Judah and for the sons of Israel, his companions'; then take another stick and write on it, 'For Joseph, the stick of *Ephraim* and all the house of Israel, his companions.' The two sticks become one through the Spirit of God. For Jacob He loved but Esau He hated. So it does not depend on man but on God who has mercy on whom He will have mercy. Exodus 33:19 And He said, "I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and I will be gracious to whom *I will be gracious,* and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion."

@ElleMonzon
@ElleMonzon 3 месяца назад
@@YungPrince2k16factors to consider: being Jewish means living walking distance to a synagogue, especially a requisite if you want to convert. The reason this is important is because you can’t live out in the countryside where it’s cheaper-your real estate is defined by community options. Kosher meat and cheese are more expensive. We (in my household) only eat meat for Shabbat and holidays. Not only for financial reasons. Jewish holidays and the weekly Shabbat are lots of money in food. Sending children to private Jewish schools is expensive. A person does not need to be financially wealthy to be Jewish but should understand that there are costs that go into the yearly lifecycle. Remember that you don’t need to convert. You can be a righteous Noachide and study your share of Torah commandments, specifically the 7 related to descendants of Noah (as opposed to descendants of Jacob who have 613).

@@ElleMonzon I dont think living in a neighborhood with a synagogue nearby is realistic for me or wont be for a long time to come, even once I start being my own conctractor, however we will see I may try one day and its if G-d allows or wants it. How would lifestyle differ from being a convert and righteous Noachide? That term is new to me but to be fair im pretty new to this. I do have a Jewish friend in NY and we talk about about history, as I absolutely love history and admirer the history of the Jewish people. I admire that after thousands of years they still have their traditions. Im Mexican and all of ours have been lost, I cant even find the language my ancestors spoke. If you were a murderer and a thief, under the noahide law that is divine capital punishment. You violated two major of the 7 commandments for non Jews, for which the punishment is much more strict than for Jews. Some opinions hold that the only way you have a chance at the world to come is through the sincere repentance followed by the desire to cling to Gd through conversion and living the Mitzvot. I can’t say you wouldn’t be a pariah. I do think with proper and sincere teshuva, anything is possible.

I heard it explained by a Rabbi that it's impossible to convert for the wrong reason(such as your example of the in-laws) because once you convert, it means you actually had a Jewish soul the whole time, and therefore, if the person didn't already have a Jewish soul, they would just quit, or some other obstacle would prevent them from finishing, showing they were not Jewish in the first place. If you convert for Hashem alone, you will, of course succeed, showing you always had a Jewish soul.
@BarakYisrael
@BarakYisrael 2 месяца назад
There is this concept. But i think it requires further explanation and deep analysis. Because there is freewill. Everyone has a set "limit" but if one tries to go beyond that, The Almighty will help individual go further. It is an interesting, kinda complicated, topic
