Probably the best (only?) kept secret of Garmin’s just announced Rally pedals is the fact that you can actually convert any Vector 3 set to either Shimano SPD or SPD-SL pedals. So if you’ve always wanted a Shimano SPD-SL (road) or SPD (typically off-road) pedal based power meter, you’re in luck. The process takes about 3-5 minutes for a set, and is silly easy to do.
This is because inside every Rally or Vector 3 pedal set are two key things: The spindle, and the pedal body. The spindle is where the magic happens, and what measures your power. Whereas the pedal body is what you clip into and visually see. Up till this point, Garmin has only offered LOOK KEO pedal bodies for Vector 3 (save a quirky Vector 1 SPD-SL cartridge thing years ago, that Tinder date didn’t last). But with Rally, Garmin has basically added two more pedal body types, and you’re able to fully convert between them as you see fit. Note - this is a 100% fully supported, designed, and purpose-built process. This isn’t a hack. Garmin specifically wants people to do this (and markets/promotes it), and specifically ensured compatibility between them.
Now in effect Rally is basically Garmin Vector 4. Except unlike the jump from Vector 2 to Vector 3, almost all the changes here are in the pedal body & battery compartment (and any Vector 3 user can get the most recent battery compartments for free). In order to quickly explain the naming convention Garmin uses, here’s a quick refresher on the three variants of Rally pedals/bodies:
Rally RS: Shimano SPD-SL Road variant (get it? RS = Rally Shimano)
Rally RK: Look KEO variant (RK = Rally KEO)
Rally XC: Shimano SPD MTB Variant (XC = Cross Country)

Garmin might move slow to innovate, but you really have to appreciate the way they make new products and features back-compatible. My 3 year old Vector 3’s can now become XC pedals...love it!

I disagree. I own Vector 2's, which aren't compatible with V3 or Rally. I cracked the plastic on the pod at the weekend and contacted Garmin to see if they had any spares. They don't. A $1000 set of power pedals made useless due to a $0.10 plastic cover.

Great video DC. I just received my RS bodies and swapped my Vector 3 spindles over. One thing to note that differed from you excellent walkthrough is that the new RS bodies I received already had both spindle seals in place. I was initially going off of you videos and cruising through the swap only to discover that the new bodies had the inner seal already seated inside. The outer seal was kind of obvious but it wasn't until i tried to move the old inner seal over that I checked the Garmin steps which called out that the new bodies did not require moving the seals over.

Righty tighty on the left pedal perhaps? But this is great - the same process as if you had to replace your pedal body at any point (usually sent out as warranty issue, but can also be purchased, like the new conversion kit). I got one pedal body to replace myself one time, but most recently got sent new Vector 3 pedals , which has the new battery connector and pod, and even had the CR1/3 N batteries too.

Thank you for the video! If you can just buy one Rally product+conversion kit and use it both on road and on MTB is really great. Not that I need power meter off road but it's good to have an option. Change process is not complicated but it's not something to be done in a hurry. I wish it was mode lego-like to simplify switch process and allow it to be done more frequently than couple of times per year. Maybe there is already a new version in development that will allow this, who knows...

Great and surprising video. I did not think the inside is compatible. Thanks for that. On the other hand Vector 3 body is not a good one as it is not durable. My Vector 3 had to be replaced in Sept 2019 and in less than 2 years there is a wear on the back where the clip attach that cause the problem it cannot be tightened so it is moving a bit. Also many other people complaining about the same issue. So the question: what about of this new body? I see the battery part has a new metal screw thread for the cap. But not sure if the body is durable or need to replace in each 1.5 year. Which is not cheap seeing the price increase between vector3 to Rally.

This is really useful, thanks! I've got a Vector 3S and where I've changed the battery multiple times (with the old and new cap), I've cross-threaded the body. I'm wondering whether I should buy a new upgrade kit for the KEO and just use my existing 3S Spindle, or just buy a new Rally RK100.

Thank you so much for all your great reviews, Ray! Question (which is also a bit more general than just on the power meter pedal): I've ridden SPD (for commuting and spinning bikes) and Look for 10+ years now but never the SPD-SL. I'm trying to wrap my head around whether there is an actual difference between the two as they seem so similar (bar for the Keo Blade, but that's a different story). I'm looking into getting power-meter pedals, but struggle to decide if I should switch to SPD-SL or stick to the Look system. Anyone cares to comment on this? I've seen people complaining for ages about the lack of SPD-SL for the Garmin (and other power-meter pedals), but haven't seen a proper reasoning articulating why. @dcrainmaker: you've tried both. Any noticeable difference for instance in the ease to clip in, say due to the balance (with one keeping the heel down better)?
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 3 года назад
Honestly, no difference to me. I know some people swear by one or the other, but frankly, after about three pedal strikes, they feel identical to me.
@superluminique
@superluminique 3 года назад
@@Dcrainmaker thanks a bunch for your answer! This is what I would logically expect as the pedals are virtually the same. I can understand some differences might arise based on actual pedals (Shimano Dura-Ace or Ultegra vs Look Keo, etc), but here everything is much more identical. This is reassuring and so I would overthink my decision then and probably stick to my old good Look cleats, which will reduce the burden of switching on my shoes. I'm tempted to wait to see if Favero will upgrade theirs with anything new besides Shimano compatibility ;-)
