Learn some tips to create a more flavorful and juicy roast turkey when using an oven roasting bag to cook a turkey. The 2 key tips are adding a spice rub to the turkey after basting with butter and placing the turkey, breast side down, to prevent the breast, legs and wings from drying out during the roasting process.

It's Thanksgiving day. I've been stressing about how to cook my turkey for a couple of weeks. I've watched your instructional video over and over. I think I have this "in the bag"! I feel totally prepared for cooking the bird later on today. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!

Tom Cogburn Happy Thanksgiving! This is my 2nd Tday doing a bagged turkey. It’s been marinating overnight and in an hour, my bird goes in. Last year, the turkey came out AMAZING. BASICALLY NO LEFTOVERS! May yours come out just as tasty.

@@RobertBogetti This year (my 3rd year hosting Thanksgiving) my hubby is deep frying a turkey (his first time) and I am baking a turkey (like in the video). Love the seasoning mix! We have around 25 people coming! I am all ears if you have any tips or tricks! PS. I've watched a million videos before settling on yours to come back to over and over. Although I did start putting some butter under the skin too. I really like using the Reynolds bag to keep it moist without basting it! :) Thank you for replying, and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well!! I will keep my eye out for a new video! My next stop is finding a sweet potato recipe I can make in the crockpot without nuts (2 people with allergies are coming, so I am just avoiding them all together after last years freak out over water chestnuts in the veggie casserole *eye roll). HA! :D

@@RobertBogetti I literally just watched it. I think that should work fine in a crockpot. (Hard to mess up a crockpot). While you're talking deep-fried turkey (or turkey in general), maybe mention the proper way to thaw a turkey. Hubby said he read that he was supposed to leave it in the sink for 2 days (!!!!!).

Just wanted to add a suggestion. I tied my turkey up and turned it breast side down and cooked it at 250 Fahrenheit for 5 hours. Until the temperature was 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature will rise as you let it sit for about 20 to 30 minutes. It will become 180 degrees F. The turkey was so moist and tender that the meat fell off the bone. I put carrots and celery and onions in the bag. I put butter under the skin. I also cut four slits into the top of the bag with a knife to let the steam out. Thanks for a wonderful video! I learn something from everyone. I also cooked my turkey on the rack like you did. It lets the heat move around the turkey better.

I have used the bags for several years. Follow the directions and you will have a very good turkey with the white meat very moist. One tip take off one half hour and use the micro wave and meat thermometer to finish for the individual person or simply use the turkey as it comes out of the oven. REMEMBER you can always cook it more but tough to undo a dry meat condition. I have had EXCELLENT results every time

The family has made fun of me for years over roasting my turkey breast side down, telling me that's not how you're supposed to do it. I've tried telling them it's to keep the breast meat from drying out. They always enjoy the turkey once it's done though. Glad to see someone else does it that way. Have you thought about adding softened butter under the skin around the breast area? A butcher suggested to me to add softened butter and either onion powder or garlic powder and place the butter mixture under the skin. You could take your seasoning mix and mix it into softened butter and place it under the skin. You would want to loosen the skin but don't completely loosen it all the way. Keep some of the skin attached. You don't want the skin to slide off of the bird while it's roasting. Also, have you considered adding a 1/2 teaspoon sage to your seasoning mix too? Have you also thought about seasoning the inside cavity with the seasoning mix also? You can add 1 medium chopped onion and 2 stalks of chopped celery and add these to the bag. This will add flavor to your gravy and drippings. After you take the turkey out of the oven, let it sit in the bag and rest for at least 15 minutes. This will pull some of the juices back into the turkey.

Came across your turkey video just the other day - just in time for this year’s Thanksgiving feast. Wanted to do something different this year for 2020, so I opted to doing one in an oven bag. Just bought myself a new Ninja countertop oven, and the “turkey - in- the - bag” was the perfect test to see how well this oven would perform. Used your idea for coating the inside of the bag, along with some additional spices & aromatics. End Result was PHENOMENAL! Used a wireless probe inside the bag to help me monitor the temp. Also used one of the injectable marinades! Turkey turned out SUPER MOIST & JUICY! Did NOT cut slits in the top of the oven bag ( as per instructions on the package) I was hoping that by not doing so, it would help keep more moisture in the bag. It did! Got to admit though- I was a little concerned of the bag bursting, with no slits for venting, but couldn’t recall seeing you doing that in your video either, so I opted to skipped that part and just, (ahem) “WINGED” it! Turned out so awesome, juicy , and tender, that I now want to do my next ham in the oven bag- and now that the wheels are starting to turn - I’m wondering how well a prime rib roast would do in an oven bag too! Hmmmm.... Agains, Bob, thanks for the great instructional video.

so I noticed that you baked it in the bag breast side down. Did that produce a more of a moist turkey?
@madmaxofspokane1691
@madmaxofspokane1691 7 лет назад
My personal reason for placing the bird breast side down is that a significant amount of seasoned juices will accumulate at the bottom of the bag and the breast meat will be infused with those flavors as it cooks. I also like to stuff the bird with a couple of cored, peeled and quartered apples.
@a.barnard3205
@a.barnard3205 5 лет назад
Even without the "bag" roasting a turkey breast side DOWN will produce moist breast meat, due to the fact that th fat from the BACK of the turkey drizzles DOWN to the breast during roasting.

I'm curious, when you cook in the bag, would you not add onions, celery, carrots, etc... inside the cavity? I've done the bag twice and both were a success. But, I haven't tried stuffing the cavity . . . OH! I like the mix of spices you use TO the flour. After you did that, IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE! Thanks for posting!!
@RobertBogetti
@RobertBogetti 5 лет назад
You can put the vegetables in the cavity as you normally would without a bag to help the flavors penetrate into the turkey. When using a roasting bag since all of the moisture is retained it helps the flavors to permeate throughout the cavity. By keeping them out of the cavity it allows for the inside of the turkey to cook a little faster and evenly.

Hello again...Just one quick question..My turkey is thawed and I was wondering if it would be ok to let the turkey sit in water all night in the frig?Ty
@cynthiaking6845
@cynthiaking6845 3 года назад
Yes it is ok, just tried this myself. Put turkey in a cooler, with one bag of ice. fill it with water so it covers the turkey shut lid and your all set for the morning. Look up BRINING A TURKEY. This is were you add spices to the Turkey /water. I was lazy and just used water it differently made the turkey juicer.

I have a meat thermometer that has a heat safe cord made of metal. I put it in the meat, set temp and it alarms when it reaches the temp. Does anyone know if the meat thermometer or cord can melt the bag?

@RobertBogetti
@RobertBogetti 8 лет назад
+craig69ish The roasting pan is fine and you are correct in that you do not need to cover the turkey since it's in the bag.

did you poke holes in the bag before putting it in the oven?

Great video! Not sure if somebody else asked this, but the butterball directions tell me to cook at 325 and the Reynolds bag directions say 350. Does it matter? I guess cooking time may be less cooking it at 350? Thanks!
@RobertBogetti
@RobertBogetti 5 лет назад
If you are using a standard oven I would use 350, if you are using a convection oven you could use 325 but 350 would be fine also. Thank you for watching!

Is is okay to spray Pam non stick spray into bag to prevent sticking?
@RobertBogetti
@RobertBogetti 5 лет назад
Yes, most commonly you just flour the inside of the bag, I like to use a flour and seasoning mix, but you could also spray it with non-stick spray and you could also add the flour after you spray it if you'd like. Thanks for watching!

I’m excited to try this! Can I stuff the turkey with dressing? Does it take longer to cook? And can I make it without a lifting rack in the roasting pan? Using a tin roasting pan?
@RobertBogetti
@RobertBogetti 3 года назад
Yes you can stuff it with dressing, it will add just a little extra time. Your turkey is done when the temperature with a meat thermometer is 180° F in thigh and 170° F in the stuffing. You don't need to use a roasting rack and a tin roasting pan is fine. Thanks for watching and Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

@a.barnard3205
@a.barnard3205 5 лет назад
A brine is WORTHLESS because your commercially available bird has ALREADY been brined. You need to learn how to properly COOK a bird, instead of relying on all of the bullshit that flies about the web.
@a.barnard3205
@a.barnard3205 5 лет назад
Oh yeah, ever wonder HOW your precious turkey gets so DRY in the first place? It's because of that BRINE, that contains a buttload of SALT that your bird has been soaking in, for the last WEEK!!!! Do you know why people add salt to their boiling water? Salt makes water boil FASTER! And SINCE all that salt is now in your bird, it too, will make your bird cook WAY faster than you ever intended it too! In other words, you are essentially BOILING your turkey from the inside OUT! And you are WAY getting your cook time THROWN OFF.

I have used the baking bags for years. I have always started my roasting with the breast-side down for about half to 2/3 the roasting time and then flip the bird and open the bag to brown the turkey for the remaining roasting time. It appeared that you did not cut 2 small slits in the bag (per the boxes instructions) and it wasn't clear if you flipped the bird during roasting. Could you please clarify these points. I plan to use your 'dusting' mix as you did. The only thing I plan to add is to rub crushed garlic cloves on the buttered turkey prior to dusting the turkey with the remaining 'dusting. I really look forward to your reply. Thank you very much.
@RobertBogetti
@RobertBogetti 3 года назад
Yes, it is recommended to make 2 small slits in the bag. Also, I didn't flip the turkey in this video, I used more of a set it and forget it approach, but I agree that your method will produce a great looking and tasting turkey. Thank you very much for commenting!

@@RobertBogetti This year, I will set it and forget it, as well, regarding flipping. Your turkey looked fantastic.
