In a 1983 interview, Mr. E. W. (Edgar) Morris explains how he cooked Chicken Muddle in Emporia, Virginia for over 50 years and why his Chicken Muddle was a favorite of the people who live in Southern Virginia.
Unfortunately Chicken Muddle is sometimes confused with Brunswick Stew because they are both normally cooked outdoors in large black pots. Actually they are very different and most true Southern Virginia people feel that there is no contest. Chicken Muddle is much better! Chicken Muddle is much thicker than Brunswick Stew and not as sweet. Most people who try Chicken Muddle agree that it has a much better taste. Chicken Muddle lovers say ..... "Chicken Muddle is thick and delicious ...... Brunswick Stew is just soup!"

Great video!!! Hearing from an "Old-Timer" years ago, who learned it from "Old-Timers" years and years ago. I grew up with Stew less than an hour from Emporia. Never had Muddle. Now I've got to try using Mr. Morris' recipe.

I've never had chicken muddle but we do make chicken mull where I live which is similar but without the tomatoes and butterbeans. Thanks so much to whoever had the foresight to record this for posterity. People like that gentlemen are treasures whose genius needs to be saved for future generations.

Wow... so glad to find this video. I grew up in nearby Capron, VA. Stuart Starke cooked great muddle once or twice a year. People would order ahead and he always sold out. I never met Mr. Morris so this video was sweet. Thanks for sharing. And yes.... chicken muddle is not Brunswick stew! ;)

Hey neighbor! I grew up in Capron. Do you remember Stuart Starke? He cooked chicken muddle every year and as a kid I was amazed to watch him cook it all day long! Big black pot using a short wooden boat paddle to stir. It was awesome and he sold out every year.

5# chicken, bacon, 2# potatoes, a quart each of onions, butterbeans, tomatoes(whole canned), corn, salt, black and red pepper, and what's that secret ingredient? Paprika?

Be aware...muddle is NOT brunswick stew. It's a far site better. And even better yet if you use squirrel and rabbit. That's what we used growing up. But unless you have a bunch of folks hunting for a few days it's hard to get enough game. Then you have to settle for chicken. And home cured bacon is what you want. Not that stuff from the meat packers.
