How to correct incorrectly clocked audio in Pro Tools

When using an external clock source with Pro Tools, you may on occasions accidentally set the clock to a different sample rate to that of the session. I've done this myself on a couple of occasions and it causes speed issues for any audio you record. In this video I address this specific issue and demonstrate how you easily correct audio which has been recorded to an incorrectly set external clock. By importing the incorrectly clocked audio into a session and manually enforcing sample rate conversion, you can return the audio back to its correct speed.

Well explained, demonstrated and put together. Finally someone who edits great/informative/concise and correct pro tools videos. Nice work as usual Mr. Maunder. Love the consistency. Cheers.

+dsrduff Thanks. I'm trying to make videos which cover aspects of Pro Tools which haven't been covered extensively before. More to follow soon :)

It's worth noting that there is another way to correct the sample rate issue described in the video. If you had some audio which was recorded into a 48khz session with an exernal clock set to 44.1 (so the audio files would be identified as 48khz but would actually be 44.1khz), you could import that audio into a new 44.1khz session and choose not to enforce sample rate conversion. This would also give the correct playback speed in the session. Bear in mind though that the files themselves would remain at a misidentified sample rate in this case.

This is fantastic. I'm in StudioOne and sometimes have something like RX forcing my external clock to 44.1 and several tracks are sped-up. I wish I could find an "easy way" to change several tracks internally. Still, this will help to tweak a quick mix I did. Thank you!

When recording our music same issue occurs that your video describes. Sample rate changes 44.1 to 48. So it must be as you describe that our mixer sample rate vs audio interface sample rate doesn’t match. Well, we really don’t need our mixer for home recording since we have ProTools but still we’d like figure it out with the mixer hooked up in the chain thru AI to the DAW. We will try as your video teaches. Thanks a bunch for great tutorial 💥💥💥⚡️🚀

@@paulmaunder3007 thanks all your vids good stuff! Well, I’m sure there is a work around but I’m too busy n not enough knowledge n experience to fix. Essentially I’ve surmised like during recording in 44.1 all stays good until like audio interface or anyway the workings of the program has input like screen saver goes on or well not sure but essentially I’m thinking the mixer USB confuses with interface USB and the mixer ‘clock sets to 48. Ive went n did my best changing back to 44.1 but it just doesn’t ‘stick n goes back to 48. So I’ve just eliminated the mixer in the recording chain. Now of course no more issues of 44.1 changing to 48. Well, I realize my explanation is confusing because I’m just theorizing the cause but main thing is taking mixer out now all is good.

Glad I found this. Weird thing happened. PC, on my second virtual desk, Windows Media Player was opened and had grabbed the clock and locked it to 44.1 Started a session at 48k in PT. Recorded everything, sounded great. Next day's tracking session, opened it up and everything was playing back higher pitched by 1.47 semitones. Turns out PT (and windows) saw the files as 48k files, but they were really 44.1 Had to create new session import everything and force SRC telling PT the files were 44.1 Sound correct BUT the tempo was not right with the click. so had to do some math: Old Tempo x (New sample rate / old sample rate) i.e. 90bpm x (44.1/48) = 82.6875

Make sure you're importing any "off sample rate" audio is imported in Ticks and not Samples. It's a bit easier to get it in line with the initial recording before importing

Mine has this issue but in reverse. It is slow rather than fast. The file is tagged as 44.1 but when I convert it to 48 it is way too fast.

I have used the same method of SRC upon import to make audio files exactly match the video from telecine. If anyone finds themselves working in post with a video from telecine, it will play 0.1% slower than real time. Audio files need to played back at the same slower rate. If the production sound mixer was aware of the whole workflow ahead of time, there is a setting on Sound Devices 7-series recorders to record 48048 but stamp the file as 48000 to avoid this problem. It seems like this problem is going away as the projects I work on now that shoot on film actually have it scanned as an image sequence (DPX) or as progressive frame video (ProRes) at the rate it was shot on.

Please help me ‼️ I’m having pops on my studio speakers and headphones but not just on my sessions while trying to record, (I can’t even record) because it pauses by itself, I think because of the cracking sounds, but even when i’m not on pro tools, when i’m just playing anything on my laptop a beat,song etc it pops! Btw I’m using a new interface i just brought today (Presonus audiobox 96) i had an issue with latency and the phantom button on my old interface (Presonus audiobox usb) but never had this type of problem that i have now with the new one! My settings are all the same as before, I’ve tried changing settings and everything but it keeps making those weird sound when i play anything! This doesn’t happen with my old interface just with the new one, I don’t know what to do because I don’t think it’s the interface, maybe settings or something on my laptop but I already tried changing everything, buffer size, etc… and nothing! And when I’m trying to record after 5sec the audio is gone!! I even got this message on pro tools session. “Audio processing could not complete due to conflicts with other CPU tasks or a potential clocking issue. If this occurs often, verify your sync cables or try changing the HW Buffer Size setting in the Playback Engine dialog. In most cases, a larger HW buffer size will prevent the problem. (AAE -9093)

It might be a clocking issue. Go into the Session Setup window and check what the Clock Master is set to. Try setting it to Internal for your interface if it isn't already.

Hello Paul, why when I record on a track it sounds distorted... and it’s nothing to do with setting the levels.

Hi Barrington. Does everything you playback in Pro Tools sound distorted or just the recordings? Let me know how you've got things connected and which interface you're using and I'll see if I can help.

@@barringtonjohnson6569 Make sure the audio interface is switched on before launching Pro Tools. The buffer shouldn't change on its own unless a different playback engine is selected.

I have the same problem with a file that was supplied to me by a client. Except in reverse. The file plays back slow instead of fast. Can't seem to figure out this process in reverse though.
@charlesdevalois2676
@charlesdevalois2676 7 лет назад
The audio must have been recorded at 48k but then rendered with a mismatched clock set to 44.
@charlesdevalois2676
@charlesdevalois2676 7 лет назад
So the file still thinks it's 48, but plays back slow. I need the file to be 48, but to play back faster, as it was originally recorded.
@charlesdevalois2676
@charlesdevalois2676 7 лет назад
Never mind. I figured it out. Converted it to 44 with src. Then imported that converted file into a 48 session without any conversion at all. Played back at the right speed! Woo hoo! Then I made a bounce, so it would have the correct speed and sample rate. Imported it into my project's session and Bam! I'm back to work. Whew!
@paulmaunder3007
@paulmaunder3007 7 лет назад
What sample rate is the audio identified as? If it's flagged as 44.1 then it's probably actually 48. Create a 48khz session then import the audio and enforce a sample rate conversion, setting the source audio sample rate as 44.1khz. The same would apply to 88.2 into a 96khz session or 176.4 into 192khz.
