In this video I go over how to correctly point a directional outdoor TV antenna. I also show you how to figure out what direction your local TV stations broadcast from. In most situations an antenna should be pointed in the direction of major ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox stations. This video may seem obvious to some of you but I am sure there are many people who aren't sure how to correctly point a directional antenna.

Young man, you put out information in a very concise, and simple manner so that even a thick headed 56year old man like myself, can understand. Your on camera delivery is very professional, and I commend you, and thank you. I stumbled across your channel recently in my quest to "cut the cord", and have subscribed. I have been somewhat "binge" watching the videos to get a picture of what I need to make this happen. Like I said, I am pretty thick headed and so, I will be going to your website, and making a request for you to assist me with the purchase of the best antenna that will allow me to "cut the cord". Thank you again.

first of all your videos are I am sure a great help to many people ! I have worked with antennas since i was like 16 that btw was 40 years ago and really nothing has changed as far as how you receive a station ,same antennas work just fine etc.The only thing I would comment on is someone does not know how to AIM a antenna (which by the way is totally understandable) but what I want to bring to everyone's attention and if you are not sure about how to aim a antenna then one thing they should be aware of is when a rotor is suggested it should be noted that when you have more than one tv (and who doesn't)usually two to five tv's in a house that a rotor really only works for one TV household.Thus if you have three tv's being watched at the same time or more or even less unless everyone is watching same channel (highly unlikely) chances are likely that the other tv's will loose the channel there are watching.Basically a rotor is for a one tv household period !

I'm a ham radio operator and antennas have fascinated me since I was a little squirt. From TV / CB / Ham antennas on home towers to the huge broadcast towers dotting the countryside. It's amazing what that little bit of aluminum and plastic can pluck out of the atmosphere especially when the conditions are just right for distant stations to come in clearly if only for a minute.

I think so also. There's one guy he's got such a crying in a Southern drawl, I'm not sure whether I can take that too seriously. But, I think I am using his antenna design. -1 element, Times Square some measurements X multiples wavelengths of some others, divided by wavelength of some others yet. I'm thinking of devising another antenna and see how that works. I'm getting 160 Oz. I waiting on a hundred and five sorry I still have to yet get six more that I know of for certain and another for more than one more Channel and then there's no seven or eight. I can still add. With a little more fine tuning. I'm also in the middle of Designing a game of Sevendust Bell through omnidirectional means with directional style Omni directional antenna. It's a little more complicated than that so I can't even describe how it work all I know is going to be Omni directional with the gain of a directional

Since I started using rabbit ears for antenna, I always tended to adjust it to where the strongest signal was. One things I had to get use to was the way the streets weren't aligned with the compass directions so that the back of the house wasn't exactly to the south and the antenna needed to be adjusted more to an angle than it seemed it should.

Thanks for your info..I've had one of the what you call "junk" antennas for about 5 years now. It works well enough for me. I'm about 60 miles south of the broadcast area north of me and 50 miles from the broadcast area south of me. I clearly receive many channels in both directions .

I like to say your very correct with your information I was like you when I was younger I experiment with signal booster and your right that the antennas are setup by the length of the antennas are cut for certain frequency
@psa110
@psa110 4 года назад
Tyler, you are exactly right to repeat what me seem obvious because there are always new people who may be unfamiliar or unaware of information you already have given. How about a video on how much loss there is over the length of an antenna. I understand you cannot put a signal booster at the end of the run to the t.v.. But I also heard you can over do it with the boost. Along those lines, I think I need to put one at the antenna (I probably need at least 50 feet of cable) but there is no electricity on the roof or in the attic. Doesn't that entail then getting an electrician in order to run power to there? Seems like this cutting the cord is beginning to get expensive.

1:38 I've been using the Junk Antenna for 6 years and it still works perfectly. Prior to assembly I clear coated the entire thing. I used high grade clear silicone for roof flashing on every joint and screw while assembling. I only need a 30 mile radius to get everything available and it does that really well at 18 feet up on a gable.

Great job! Here, it is easy, all translators (UHF) are all at the same location, channels 17-34, at 12.2 miles LOS. Point the antenna at about due North, so it works out well. Glad I don't have to deal with stations in all directions.
@patrickmartin4996
@patrickmartin4996 4 года назад
Thanks. There are some CP's around here for more translators, but all of the new ones that "may" be activated in the future are all UHF. In the early days 2005, there were two CPs for channels 4 & 5, but neither were built and I doubt now if anyone would be interested in low band VHF as everything else is UHF. No CPs for High Band VHF were ever issued either. You do a great job.

One important thing to mention is that TV and radio transmission complexes are rarely at their studio buildings addresses. That self-supporting tower at the studio building is only for the microwave transmitter that beams the signal to the real transmission site which is usually a guyed, kilofoot tower.

Tyler, I installed an antennas direct Clearstream 4 v antenna about 18 mos ago and have adjusted it several times trying to get the best signal. I thought I had it pointed at the TV towers and was getting around 105 channels 18 miles east of Nashville in a low area with a lot of trees and other obstructions. When the trees got leaves this spring, I got more pixelation. I finally figured out that the best signal for those networks came in by pointing the antenna a little bit off from directly at the towers. I now only get around 67 channels instead of 105, but my local networks are much stronger and no longer pixelate. I didn’t care about most of the other channels anyway. I guess my point is that the number of channels one receives is not as important as the quality of the signal on the channels one wants.

I have enjoyed all your videos. Have been trying to get my OTA setup right. Using a 9' speaker stand outside to get the right location, before I put on the house. Ran into some interference, so I moved it away from house and outside heat pump. There are LED lamps in the house, but I turned them off. I was able to watch SNF game a week ago without any problems. I had an ANTOP UFO that worked well when I was 20 miles outside of DC, now I am 70 miles from DC, so I just ordered the ANTOP Big Boy. hopefully that helps. all good and correct far as I know... being OLD, (enuf to have lived pre-cable), though I have one thing to add. I have had perfectly good undamaged new antennas that would be as much as 30 degrees off the visible direction...By that I mean it LOOKED like it should point THERE but with this particular set of spikes you had to point it over HERE quite a bit then it worked fine... Best to fish about before giving up.

I have mine pointed slightly away from the antennae tower because its pointed right toward a hill that way. Instead I have it pointing parallel with the hill down a valley or crevasse. It’s only maybe a 30 degree difference . A good way to find where to point it is to go to google earth , pin your house then pin the antenna field - find the straight line and vwalla.
@dchall8
@dchall8 3 года назад
Just one more detail at the very end before viola. When you zoom in on the house, note what landmarks the line falls on in YOUR neighborhood. I don't have to aim mine at 248.5392346 degrees or at that tower 70 miles away, because I know if I aim it at my neighbor's left front porch, it will be aimed perfectly. Then LOCK IT DOWN.

Tyler, you should purchase the jigs to manufacture the old HBU-22 and market them yourself. Start a company called "AMPA antennas" (AMPA = AntennaManPA) and sell them at a fair price - you'd sell a million !! I had an HBU-22 that was hit by lightning and replaced it with an HBU-33. I like the 22 better and by the time I went to get another one they were out of business. I'm almost 76 yrs old, a retired TV repair man in the Windsor, ON (Detroit) area. Having used broadcast antennas my whole life I of course know this, but it is good info. Antenna web used to (they may still, I'm uncertain) show the direction of the transmitters in compass degrees and I sit a compass on the main beam of the antenna to true north and then adjust the beam until it lines up with the compass degree numbers and voila! It sure beats all hell out of shouting to someone in the house back & forth to tell when the reception is best.

Early conical antennas for local reception back in the 50's were often pitched, ostensibly to increase pick up on ch 9 - 13. Our next door neighbor's conical was aimed backwards, I presume because of the "arrow" concept (the X's were pitched toward the front of the antenna). But their reception was OK because it was a strong signal area.

2 down sides of using a rotor for weak stations. 1. If watching in a different room I need to go back to the living room to turn the antenna. 2. If using an OTA DVR, if the antenna is pointed the wrong way, the programmed show will be messed up. Like you said, no problem with the strong stations.

I live in nassau Bay, Texas, southeast of Houston. TV Transmitters are in 2 locations; one 22 miles and 270 degrees from me, and 26 miles and 330 degrees from me. In which direction should I aim my Five Star TV roof-top Yagi Satellite HD Antenna to get signals from both transmission locations ???

Another tip: If you are between major cities or between two transmitter masts (often many stations are on one mast or a mast farm on a high spot/mountain), point the antenna at the *weaker* stations (or your preferred stations if both are equal distance). I point mine to the more distant and often preferred big city stations even though the same networks are in another city about half as far but 180° the other directions. In my case, some of the PBS stations are off to the side too. Nothing you can do about that, unless, all you watch is PBS… The result is I get all the stations from both big cities perfectly fine except for a couple stations (that I don't much like anyway) that are, ironically, the closest to me but, are behind my neighbor's higher house. There is nothing I can do about that!

About how far are the closer ones. I have one im about to install where its 65 miles to a bunch of stuff and 16 miles in the opposite direction. I was wondering if I could get away one antenna pointed at the further away stuff?
@mongo2044
@mongo2044 9 месяцев назад
@@jamisonmunn9215 Point main at father ones. 16 is not that far if you have good line of sight to mast. But, 65 is far. Maybe use an antenna for distance over 65 to be safe. I think my far stations are around 35 and close about 9 miles. But it varies as there are also stations on the other axis too! But they are dupes of the 9 milers or, not stations I watch much if ever. But they come in great too.

I live on the Northwest coast of Puerto Rico about 1/4 mile from the ocean. On a cliff about 300 ft above sea level, NBC OTA is located about 85-90 miles Sotheast of me ,with mountains between my location and the tower. I could not pick it up with my Yagi antenna. I put on a mast about 8' above roof line. I moved it around and found the place I could get it was to aim to the East-Northeast looking out to the ocean,works great. I talked to a guy that is a pro comercial radio tower guy that said it's the signal coming from the ocean salty water, he said whatever works ,he said signals can be very weird.

Antenns are also used for RF treatment in biological tissues. They oscillate at 13.56 ie 27.12 MHz. These antennas do not broadcast for great distances but mostly only for 1-2 millimeters for a RF micro antenna about 3-4 mm in length. Since all RF signals generate heat in their medium, and these more so in a moist medium, I woodier to what extent does the point effect spell out exactly where heat is generated, namely around the point of the probe. Additionally, will the short probe burn tissues if the point of the probe is not within the wet part of the tissues. Of course there all kinds of 13.56 and 27.12 antennas also used for such things as garage door openers or even car door openers. I know that these short probes also do not become hot themselves but the RF +/- oscillations move the local environment surrounding the broadcast antenna (hydrogen ions) which does create heat. In other words, you can get fried to a crisp by the RF oscillations of strong oscillators even though the antenna element itself is cold. I'd like to know more about the physical properties of antennas in the 4-5 mm length. Many of these antennas are only 0.002 to 0.004 inches in diameter. Got any good books you would recommend to get an accurate picture of the forces involved around monopole antennas used in medical equipment and many other smaller RF devices?

Hi Antenna Man. I'm one of the newbs so I appreciate these entry level videos. It seems I'm in the middle of 4 broadcast antennas; NW, NE, further NE & SW of my location all roughly 10 - 35 miles away. I went with the Clearstream 4V antenna and also got the Winegard LNA-200 Boost XT. I am picking up 48 to 56 stations but was primarily interested in getting ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX & PBS. The first 4 are fine with good reception. PBS, I'm picking up 3 different stations; 28.1, .3 & .4 but not 9.1. Any suggestions on what to do pick up the PBS 9.1??? The is the PBS station I was primarily interested in receiving.

Yeah, the lower frequencies have to pass by the shorter elements for the higher channels, so the narrower end points into the desired transmitter. A multi-element layout like CM4221 may bring more off-axis channels than a yagi or log-periodic design.

I live in southwestern Pennsylvania, about 60 miles due south of Pittsburgh. When I first put up my tower (back in the analog days) I installed my TV antenna on a side-arm bracket. I was attempting to watch channel 11 in Pittsburgh, but I was receiving interference and was forced to turn my antenna to the east just to reduce the interference. After the program was over, I played with rotor and discovered that co-channel interference was coming from WTOL, Channel 11 in Toledo, Ohio.

The small end does not always mean front. On multi band units the UHF is smaller width and is on the front and vhf is on the back by design not to indicate front. on a single band antenna What really determines the front is the number of elements that are directors ahead of the live element that the balun connects to and fewer reflectors are on the back of the antenna. As your example unit is multi band and the uhf reflector is the back of the uhf section. that V shaped piece, the vhf section may be all live elements or a combination of all 3 with more directors at the front. bow tie units do not have any directors just a mesh reflector. if we look at a ten element hi-vhf antenna there will always be many directors on front and a few reflectors on the rear. and no end is smaller. And a yagi uhf is the same just way narrower with the reflector V at the rear and again no end is smaller.

Of course until now at 50 years old, now I know with help from Tyler. Anyway , I no longer use an antenna and the poor Channel Master didn't make it past 1998 due to a icestorm in Upstate NY. However she lasted 17 years picking up about 13 channels.

Truth and Quality. Practical and Useful Information. A quick search found this web site that get you a little further along the road , fmscan.org . I am searching for more information. , the Humans at fmscan will most likely have more information about where and who to contact in Uruguay about locations of transmitters through out Uruguay. I am searching for more information. The information is usually hard to find. However if I dig deep enough and ask a lot of questions. Wikipedia says Uruguay is a very advanced and great country of South America. Real high up as a good place to live. Or even retire to from other places world wide.

Truth and Quality. Practical and Useful Information. Ok here is another website. www.overtheairdigitaltv.com/installing-over-air-hd-antenna-different-countries I am continuing to research so as to find the information of locations of Tv transmitters of Uruguay. Yes you can search for information. Will require creative thinking on your part. Asking same questions in different ways. Says the same , with different wording. You can contact Ham Radio Operators in Uruguay and ask questions. It is easier to exchange information on the phone , with a telephone , then using the internet. You can contact Tv stations and talk with the engineering staff. Ask questions like and not limited to , I am looking for a map or maps that show the locations and other information about the Tv transmitters. If they try to put you off , The say well Ok what are the locations of your transmitters through Uruguay?? They will know this information because they them selfs need to know the information or they would not know them selfs how to get to and do maintenance on their own transmitters. Also ask for and get printed map or maps showing locations of transmitters. The more information the better. Think creative , who else and where else can I find the information I am requiring. Most likely someone or someones knows. But that person or persons thinks that no one cares any more. This often is the truth , many Humans of this time period on this planet do not know any thing about anything and make no effort no know any thing about anything. Their whole life revolves around , them self , eating , and sex. And that's it!!! Any way Wikipedia has a lot of positive information about Uruguay , says the moto is The Orenit of South America. And Wikipedia has some information about Television in Uruguay , As of 2015 the digital broadcast Tv system as is with most of South America is , ISDB-t . So do you have to know a lot of technical information. Not really , you require practical and useful information so you can do what you want to do.

I've been using 2 RCA rabbit ears to supply 2 TV screens with signal. I tried adding an inline amp to see if signals could be strengthened- it didn't work. In my hours of frustration I tried using only one rabbit ear set for both TV's . The VHF channels came in OK but the UHF were absent. The remedy was to take a ragged discarded set of APPLE EAR BUDS and drape them over the rabbit ears. A few adjustments until all channels came in. This freed up valuable space - eliminated clutter. The new (2020) converter box by NUNET has allowed me to record with ease I've never experienced. AMAZON just raised it's price to $50. doncha know.

In most big cities transmitter for all channels usually at same location example Tampa Bay area 3 or 4 towers all located at Riverview except for a few low power channels. Orlando and Miami, Birmingham AL much the same way at a central location called a antenna farm but in small areas like Dothan Al, Columbus GA,Abany GA, Panama City and Tallahassee FL you have to use a roter because towers are at different locations.
