Between short-lived digital media content and doomscrolling, audiences around the globe suffer from compassion fatigue and news anxiety. At the same time, their demand for debate and solutions keeps growing: whether it’s about climate change, human rights, or ongoing armed conflicts.
But what voices do newsrooms tend to amplify - and to what effect? What measures can we take to reliably report on global news events while covering constant threats to the future of humankind as well? Is it time to reevaluate our own attention span as journalists?
DW moderator Jared Reed analyzes these essential issues with
- Afua Hirsch, British writer, broadcaster and best-selling author
- Javier Garza Ramos, journalist and security expert form Mexico
- Bartholomäus Laffert, Austrian freelance reporter at Selbstlaut Kollektiv
- Nic Newman, Senior Research Associate at Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism

Afua said it on Frankie Boyle's NWO (S3Ep2). Can the discussion on Rape have a Rapist represent one side of the discussion on Anti-Rape?

Journalists tend to see them as better people but from interviews with journalists and contact with journalists I can tell you that they give you the answer they intend to publish when doing interviews. They just want to stick to their black and white / good and bad image they make their living from. I contacted the media over issues like tax evasion, not one request from one single journalist (German or Maltese). Journalists are focused on stories that sell immediately and turn into money for their editor as quick as possible and that enhance their career. They are also not free to choose a topic. The editor decides what sells. Journalism and news are business. I don't like how journalists constantly picture themselves as saints

As for immediate knowledge, is it important that I, in Australia, should have minute by minute notification that Trump, or one of his lackeys, has said a word that might affect my opinion of his slimy guilt? My local News, here in the Upper Yarra Valley of Victoria in Australia, is rather more of interest.
