Design ATM for 6 year old Interesting concept and also appreciate the working session format!! I was answering the questions parallel-ly as Kshitija asked questions. I enjoyed solving it along. **School is perfect place for a child to use ATM. I really liked the identification of place of usage. Use cases: 1. Buy candy from canteen 2. First grade kids still use pencils and eraser. To buy stationery like colour pencils, crayons, erasers, sharpener, chart paper, greeting card - situations when they lose items or run out of stock 3. Subscribe to monthly school magazine. I remember in our school, we were given an option to pay Rs. 6 for a copy of weekly school news. This was not in 1st grade though. It started in 4th grade (9 year old). **Why would parent not give cash to kid and instead allow to use ATM? 1. Parent TG resides in Tier-1 and lack of time to withdraw cash. This is supremely true because even they do not carry cash 2. Accounting will be a hassle. Parents essentially want to understand how did their child spend money. ATM is a smart choice to keep track of money withdrawal frequency and time stamp. 3. Giving a card for withdrawal also opens the possibility of setting rules of withdrawal. Example, not more than Rs. 100 in 1 time and not more than 3 transactions in a day. 4th transaction onwards need additional layer of authentication by guardian / parent. 4. Cash means possibility of physical loss or theft. Handling money is followed by 2 responsibilities: 1. Spending it wisely 2. Keeping it safely I like the thought process where UD was not only focused on end user that’s the 6 year old kid but also thought about persona of related stakeholders like parents and school. Parent from where the money would be funded and school where the money would be spent on. Mindset of creating a usage loop. In functionalities, I would like to add 1. Usually we have remarks to add to the transaction. If atm machine has ability to record a voice note/video note of a few seconds to be attached to the transaction history in the app. This would act as a powerful retention hook both for the parent and the kid. Why? If you observe, schools today record almost every milestone of a child starting from classroom co-curricular activities. Making a financial transaction is a powerful milestone and a repeated action to be recorded. This will also inculcate habit of informed spending and eliminate hurdle for a parent to question reason of spend. 2. A voice chat like integration with Alexa / Google bot capabilities. Kids nowdays have built friendship with voice bots by imitating their elders at home who keep giving instructions or asking questions by calling out “Hey Google”, “Hey Alexa” .. A 5 year old these days searches videos on RU-vid by using voice search and also able to speak decent English sentences. This capability would eliminate the struggle for a kid to seek support in confusion. A 6 year old would like to ask verbally than to write his/her concern. Hi, it is an interesting video and concept. I would like to add another use case scenario which is actually from the real-life experience of a friend of mine. She was asked to go to the ATM by herself when she was at approximately 7 to 8 years because her father was in the military, and her mother did not want to go for some particular reason. So sometimes kids may be asked to take charge when parents are not around. I think this is also a use case.

Wholesome Product content🙌 A really good takeaway from this session is the product dissection through - defining the Primary user, Stakeholder, and End facilitator. During your discussion of product, you considered 3 things, Look & feel, Functionality, and User Flow. Since the product is building an ATM for a 6-year-old, I would have loved to see you discuss one more aspect - Product Safety. 🆘 You spoke about kids losing money at that age and hence the need for ATMs for kids. Don't you think you think there are high chances for Kids to lose their ATM card/scenarios where there could be theft? Love to hear how UD would incorporate this case basis too. Also, on the GTM/Launch strategy side - I see this as a great market fit for parents who send their kids to boarding school and be interested in all the metrics you shared in the video. Look forward to the GTM session! Cheers guys!

Hey Roopak, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! Yes. There are almost always more than 1 user for any product round. 99% of people don't consider this. To your question of children losing things: Any kind of card/voucher/token based ATM will fail on the main problem pain point: Children lose things. Hence, the authorisation will be biometric. Downside/unhappy flow is wet hands which I covered at 26:30.

Just one point I felt was an assumption, the ATM is a teller machine that serves some banking services remotely .. sort of branch in a box. money withdrawal although dominant is only one of the use cases. was thinking if this device is more.aestheicaticallly designed to maybe help kidss inculcate a habit of saving .. digital.piggy bank at school.

Hey Sriram! Thanks a ton for watching the video :) I prioritised for parents use case of- I don't want to worry about my 6 year old eating proper food in school vs teaching about money. My hypothesis was that proper food would be a stronger use case. (for 80% of parents) This is for the following reasons. - User is a 6 year old, very different from a 10+ year old. - They are still little babies (sometimes peeing their pants in schools :D) - Going to a proper school first time (9am to 3pm) - Parents core pain point is children not eating proper food vs say teaching about money. If this was a problem statement for 10+ year olds the piggy bank solution would have more impact and hence did not consider it :) Hope my thought process helps why I didn't prioritise this 🙏🏻

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I mainly wanted to highlight that ATM is a teller machine. It has become synonymous with money withdrawal but as a telelr machine, there could be more scope for kids. Lot of piggy banks start early, the device could also be there for other forms of engagement.

One question, the fingerprints are not very clear for the children, it used to happen with me every time, especially during Adhaar registration, Don't you think Authentication with their ID Card/Roll no would be better in this case? And just to protect against the malicious attempt, we can give 3 digit pin - easy to remember.
