How to create a 3d topographical map on a CNC! Using a free program to convert google map data Rowdy Roman created an .stl of Ketchikan, Alaska. I then put it into ‪@vectric‬ Aspire and turned the .stl into a 3d toolpaths for my ‪@OnefinityCNC‬ !

Great vid, Ben! Loved seeing the CNC process from start to finish, including design, material setup, bit changes, and all the little details. Really helps me understand the whole picture! Can't afford a CNC like that for my own map-making, but dreaming about it!

Awesome video, Ben! It was great to see the whole process including design and all aspects of using the CNC: material prep and placement, probing, bit changes, etc. And actually explaining why you are doing these things, not just “do this then do that.” It really brings everything together for me!

It looks great! That is a nice large mill! Im using a tiny 3018 pro cnc mill. I love it, but its small. 2 tips for doing this that Ive run into now. Im doing my first topographical carve as Im typing this. 1: The blue tape is great, but Ive had the piece come loose. I put the hold down clamps pushing on the side of the piece to keep it from sliding against the tape. 2: Make sure you have access to the spindle for changing the bit. I used a piece of wood covering the whole bed and had the roughing bit installed. When time came to change to the smaller finishing bit, there was no way to remove the roughing bit as the wood was too tall for the bit to slide out. I had to loosen and lift the spindle up to avoid moving the wood piece.

Nice project, couple of thoughts. I use a lot of slab wood so like you do use a planner bit to flatten them. Because I use odd shapes I now screw two alloy battens under them and then screw down to the spoil board, save a lot of time and is very stable. Also you could have programmed a frame around the map with raised edge and finish to save the screw holes and need for tape.

Agree, just center the model and you will have no need for tape. For next time, no real need to flatten the entire top, just the touchoff end (not enough material across the whole board to worry about tool pass depth. Also you can shift the model some to the other end so you can re-touch off the Z on the same spot. Cool project.

Just wondering, didn't you add an aftermarket spindle to your 1Finity recently? Was part of this video just done before that?

done before that. Most of my videos are 4 months old or more after i release them. the final shot you can see the spindle.

Amazing video and exactly what I am learning to do. I do have a couple questions hope you can help:) how long did this take on the cnc to cut? I am using camlab and something like this would take 6-8 hours with their roughing patching "clockwise path" does that software not automatically go clockwise? Does v carve the software you are using work as a all 3 stages? Hope you can help thank you for your time:)

You can set v carve to do raster or conventional. Depending on the machine, this may well take 3-10 hours on a carve.

You say oak is grainy, and as a result caused the problem with the lettering. What species would you choose if you had the project to do over again? 1F due to arrive in April, mainly as a result of your influence. Also, still debating software choice... would this project be possible on vcarve pro, or is aspire required? Thanks for all the great info 👍

Sapele (mahogany) is a great wood for carving on the CNC and close to the same price. It's what i use for most of my stuff.

It went vertically because of the text you chose. If it has the @ in front of it then it is turned.

awesome, as a finish you shoul fill it with clear epoxy that way it wont be hard to clean the dust off or get dirty over time

I'm loading up the shopping cart and one thing that's boggling my mind is what is the functional difference between RC-2248 and RC-2249 What would be the benefit of getting one or the other? I plan on flattening hard/soft wood both with and against the grain. Thanks for making great content.

4:48 ...hot glue your workpiece to a sacrificial base, a piece of 1/4" ply, laminate, or ??? something bigger than your work piece and clamp that piece down. hot glue is incredibly strong

Yes. If the land portion detail was acceptable, a single pass with 1/16" for the text-only would be a quick solution. Nice job either way.

I don't this your video is of any usted to anybody anymore, the website to create the STL file is down and the new page he mention can't do what you did in his video, lower the water level so you can used resin, sure you can create a 3d map. What a waste of time.
