For people who like color year round it’s a great option… it’s also great for people who sometimes… hmm how do I say this… who don’t have a green thumb and plants sometimes die… easy fix and plop in a new $10-$15 plant and voila!

This is also good for rentals. When I am ready to move I can remove flower pots, pull up sunken pot and refill holes. Thanks for the idea

Yep, our soil here needs to be augmented with something to ensure growth. I like a mixture of Black Kow, mushroom compost, and top soil mixed in my wheelbarrow to plant with. Also good when taking up old mulch, spread some around, then mulch. Nice to see a neighbor on You Tube!

IMO, to dig that large a shrub out of the ground and for it to do well, you would have to dig out a very large root ball. This would leave a big hole, plus many people wouldn't want to dig a hole to plant that size of plant. Most people want to plant a smaller plant and let it grow to be the size they want. The shrubs he took out look pretty common to me. I expect people can easily buy smaller versions.

They are not 5 gallon buckets they were actually planter pots that you would normally use above ground. They come in such a variety of shapes and sizes so it lets you tailor it to the landscape you want. 5 gallon buckets would not be a bad idea but it would be quite a deep hole and lots of empty space to fill.

plants will do better if planted in the soil. don't leave the plants in the black plastic containers, they will jsut die if they are not watered constantly and will become root bound and not product as many flowers. also add about 10x more compost to the bush holes than he did. a couple handfulls in bottom of hole is not enough. an entire bag per hole is needed

Plants will do better in the soil long term, however an annual plant that dies after one growing season does not need to establish roots like a perennial plant would. You are right though about watering… a plant in a container will need more attention for watering because it is not absorbing as much through the ground. Now I’m regards to the compost I wouldn’t be too quick to give out “blanket advice”. Some plants will thrive with more compost that part is true, however others will struggle because the more compost you add the more it changes the pH level of the soil. A few handfuls in the bottom of the whole mixed in with the original soil and a little more mixed in as you back fill is the safe bet for most plants.

@@DaisyDukesLandscaping I agree. This is a terrible idea. These plants will not grow well in these small nursery pots. They should be planted in the ground or much larger pots.

I went to do this many many years ago, but my mistake was to use the same size pots that nest. I couldn't lift them out because the suctioned together... so make sure your pots are different sizes. Nowadays I pop a few lifelike fake plants into buried pvc tubs here and there. Tricks plenty of people.

Sorry I’m just now seeing this…it’s been a busy spring!! The pots do not come with holes, but they have tabs that can be pushed out to make holes or you can drill a few drain holes in the bottom. I agree you don’t want them to be solid because no plants like soggy roots! I think these specific pots came from Lowes but you can use anything you want… I was just looking for some type of durable plastic that wasn’t flimsy and would break easily.

These are best used for annual plants do the likely hood of root problems is not very likely since they’re short living plants.

Can I ask a question about weeds? I noticed with your digging, there is none of that black weed guard paper there. How do you keep the weeds out of an area like that? I’m trying to work in my own garden, and weeds are a constant problem. I hate that weed guard stuff, because once you put it down, you can’t dig anymore if you want to later add another plant. I want a clean garden with mulch too, just not sure how to accomplish it! Help!

You can add fabric beforehand but if you’re covering with mulch weeds will eventually grow on top of the fabric. If you choose to him with a fabric you can cut where you want the plants to go.

i like the idea but when you get a good rain those pots are gonna fill up and hold a lot of water since there essentially a low spot (hole) in the ground… might drown some plants

Certainly that could happen…depends on the part of the country you live in too. I drill holes in the bottom and have even added gravel as a base for the planter to help with excessive moisture.

I wanted to plant holly in front of my porch but once I started digging I found pipes under the dirt. Uuugg. I cant dig to far deep so i dont know what to plant there right now. Just flowers?

I definitely wouldn’t plant anything that has a vigorous root system that’s for sure. Flowers or bulbs would probably be ok depending on what type of pipes they are.

They’re plastic pots…nothing special about them, although I would make sure it’s durable and not flimsy or easy to crack because you wouldn’t want to have to replace them very often.

I’m sorry we are just now seeing the comments. I don’t recall the flowers by name because it has been a while and many jobs have been done since this video, however the shrubs in the back were called sunshine ligustrum and the border grass is liriope (aka monkey grass). Hope this helps!

The flowers used are petunias you see them a lot in hanging pots but you can also buy them in six packs they usually bloom all summer long and will tolerate the full sun you do need to deadhead them to keep them flowering longer and looking pretty

Sorry just seeing your response. I can’t remember if I showed it in the video or not, but there are false holes in the bottom of the pots that I just knock out to create drainage for or you can use a drill and put in three or 1/2 inch holes. If you get a lot of rain when you dig out the holes for your pots you can put gravel underneath so the water has a place to drain too if needed

Do you know anything about arborvitae my are all dead on the bottom and I can see the fence behind them also there is a lot of dead in the middle of the plants I am in Buffalo NY and am zone 5 what can I do

Could be disease or insects…in either situations they aren’t likely to bounce back and if you have other arborvitae in close proximity they’ll probably start showing similar symptoms. They are a very finicky evergreen. Sorry probably not what you were wanting to hear.

My first guess is that they are not getting enough water. I also would read about how to grow that particular type of arborvitae. There are lots of RU-vid videos about these plants. I think arborvitae like a lot of water--at least my Emerald Greens do. When I planted them, I put a ring of built-up soil out from their trunk (six inches beyond the edge of their branches) so the water would not run off, but would soak into their roots. This makes kind of a moat. Then when I watered well, the water would soak into their root ball and not just run off. When I first planted mine, I watered well 3 times a week for several weeks. Then I watered twice a week for 2 weeks during the hotter summer. I still water them if it hasn't rained. This may be overkill, but mine are doing great. I have heard that arborvitae can get mites, so that would be something to check. Also, I used Plant Tone fertilizer the second year (just a general slow-release fertilizer) and that seemed to perk mine up a bit.

Root balls should be plant about an inch above the soil line. I didn’t rewatch the video to see where I planted them but I’m sure they’re fine. Last I checked with the home owner they were doing great!

Understood…but this is designed for annuals which typically have a short lifespan anyways. For those wanting to extend their annual plant’s life they could always add potting soil to the planters and remove the possibility of it being root bound as quickly. Then they still have clean holes every season, but it’s much easier to “pluck and plop” new plants in.

This pot idea is a waste of money and doesn't make any sense why you would do that. Stick them in ground to give them the nutrition they would get in the ground. They can be seasonal changed out and look better then in pots

There’s definitely more than one way to skin a cat that’s for sure!! This is for homeowners who don’t have a ton of time or know they don’t have a green thumb and the pants are likely to die anyways. This just makes it really easy to change flowers as often as you want in less time than it would take to even pick them out.
