Another tip for when you want to create a new garden bed that is currently covered by grass would be to cut the grass down as low as possible with a mower or trimmer and then place cardboard on top followed by a thick layer of mulch. This eliminates having to dig up all that grass which is time consuming and strenuous.
@catlegend5069
@catlegend5069 2 месяца назад
This is a terrible idea. Just rip the darn grass down, it's not that hard. Instead of having to buy mulch, source plenty of cardboard, and then all the time waiting for the grass to die. You literally can do it all in one day if you do it manually and it's free.
@garystew2077
@garystew2077 2 месяца назад
@@catlegend5069 To each his own. This worked very well for me when creating new garden beds. Most people put mulch down in garden beds anyway so I'm not sure what your point is there. You also don't have to wait to plant things. Just plant them first and then put the cardboard and mulch down around your plantings.

garystew2077- that’s a great idea. As for mulch-I have plenty of leaves from my 70 year old oak and three pine trees!! I’ll give this a try this weekend. Thank you!

I did this in a few different locations. The last one had Bermuda grass, which grew up through and around the barrier. That was a fail!

ha I agree! I cringe a little every time someone just calls any random recip saw a "Sawzall." Maybe I'm just a snob though lol

Glad to see a recip saw for pruning. People have laughed at me for years seeing me prune with mine. And that Ryobi surface cleaner is like gold. People also laughed at that that until they saw the results. I’ve also bought a telescopic wand and have pressure washed my two-story house from the ground. Keep up the great work!

I used a reciprocating saw with blades made for wood, to take down a diseased Japanese maple tree that was 30 years old. Since my husband’s chainsaw was broken, I used what I had. I was 65 years old and a woman. If I can do it, anyone can. I will say that I had to hire someone with a stump grinder to remove the stump.😂

Appreciate the basics. I’m a new homeowner trying to learn about salt water pools, lawn care and irrigation/drainage. Previous owner took decent care at best for everything. Lots of DIY of his in going to have to fix.

Remove that topsoil from the garden bed also. I use my cut in dirt for leveling jobs on other parts of the property. Piling any surplus behind the shed & covering with burlap sheet

Do you think that your edging technique will be effective with Zoysia grass which has a very long thicket root system? I just purchased hard plastic edging but haven't started installing it.

How do you do you fill in large dips in your lawn? I read sand and top soil then seed.
@rogueengineer
@rogueengineer Год назад
Yes, sand then top soil and seed. Cover with something that will hold moisture like straw. Keeping the seed wet will help germinate and grow faster

Difference is that companies will just give your lawn generic applications and not what your lawn may need. You’ll end up with very poor results with most all spray companies out there

For a flower bed, should the mulch be piled higher than the grass or should it be level? The garden beds I inherited are a mess and I’m not sure if I need to dig it all out and place new mulch so it’s even with the grass or what.
@roberttreasure1986
@roberttreasure1986 2 месяца назад
If the flower bed is up against the house, I think you would want it to be higher than the grass, so water runoff goes away from your house. If your flower bed is not up against your house, and you have lawn around it, I like it level, so I can mow right up to it and don't have to deal with using an edger. I think it is your personal preference.

The recip saw is a useful but violent tool for pruning. The cuts in the video were bad. They will cause harm to the tree in coming years. Trees need to be pruned from the beginning of their life to ensure you do not have poor growth patterns (4:47). If that maintenance is done when the tree is juvenile, you would never need a reciprocating saw to cut limbs (unless damaged by nature). I understand often people just buy into property with established trees, promoting your audience to care for trees in their youth would be far more helpful. Proper pruning techniques would be not cutting the crown, good angle and prior branch weight reduction. Following proper arborist limb removal by removing only Crossing/Rubbing/Diseased/Dead limbs is very important.

Surface cleaners without a grease fitting are garbage and will stop working within a half dozen uses. If you go that route a commercial grade is the only way to keep you from wasting money.
