Hi Heidi! I am an international apparel production major in California. I just wanted to say THANK YOU so much for these videos, especially ones like this! In my first couple of years at university, I watched a ton of your videos to gain as much knowledge about this industry as I could so that I would be able to land internships/jobs moving forward. I am in my last semester at university and your advice has shaped my career so much. I've had two design and merchandising internships, one in London doing modular apparel and, recently, one at a major international activewear brand based in California. I love your videos and look forward to seeing what you are doing next!
First to like and first to comment 😬! I am a seasoned ( nice term for old) fashion designer and I wish I had known this stuff when I was young. I attended a famous Italian school and I’ve been wanting my money back ever since. Were talking graduated in 1994 😱. So in fashion years I am now officially a Dinosaur. When I started working I realized I knew nothing. Years forward I now find myself too old to be an assistant but with a resume that sucks to apply for a Director position. Even though I worked for a few internationally famous high end brands, holding a position as design director in one of them, I am only now learning Ai and PS. After I lost my last job in 2007 I decided to go back and study all those things I found out I didn’t learn in fashion school. As I mentioned earlier I am in the process of learning Ai and PS with the purpose of creating a whole new portfolio and hopefully land a job. I want to thank you Heidi for sharing your knowledge and giving those free tutorials. What you do is amazing and I really hope that younger designers appreciate the value of what you are sharing. Even “Dinosaurs” like me can learn a lot from you. I just hope it’s not too late for me ☹️. Bless you! 💖
Hi Markus - wow, so awesome to hear from you and hear your story!!! Really glad you're digging in and taking every opportunity to learn this stuff, your determination and dedication is clear, I am sure you will go far!! Keep me posted on your journey and keep kicking major a$$!! You got this!!!👊
Heidi!!!!! I'm totally new to the fashion space . . . design is my hobby, but computers/AI/etc is my main skillset & job target. Turns out that your video was super helpful in conceptually putting together a "data/AI" portfolio for apparel industry [don't worry, AI is NOT going to replace designers, it'll just be a tool in their toolkit]. Everything you mentioned was spot-on and very relevant. THANKS for your well-explained overview of the designer hiring mgr POV. Loved it!! I hope your design student subscribers are successful!! Cheers!
Such great advise! I have been super stuck with what to put in my professional portfolio after being made redundant from my designer position and now I have so many ideas going around in my head! Thank you!
I can't believe that someone can actuallllllly be this helpful ....this supportive and telling all the secrets out there !!!!!!! THANK U SOOO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@SewHeidi Actually, i m creating my student portfolio and confused about what i should include in it, and after watching this video, it is clear for me.
Hi Heidi , You actually suggest the right things at right time. After doing masters in textiles and clothing and having very few years of work experience in manufacturing industry I had a break in my career bcoz of personal reasons. After coming to the USA I started going to a fashion school to revive my knowledge and experience. Almost in my last semester and want to make the best portfolio. This tutorial is amazing, you have cleared all those doubts I wanted to discuss with my preffessor after the semester opens 😍. I can’t thank you for all your wonderful help. The best take away is designing stuff that’s commercial and not (always) conceptual and creating self driven projects 👍 I love you for your best suggestions 😍
Hi Heidi, thank you for making a video on this topic. It is really very helpful. Can you please explain about what you actually mean by self driven projects? Many thanks.
Of course! A self directed or self driven project is one that you do on your own. So, you come up with a color palette, the designs, and maybe even some sample tech packs for a "self directed" collection. You don't have to manufacture or produce it, but creating a "mock" collection for a brand you admire (or want to work for!) is a great way to show them that you are a good match. Hope that helps :)
I have tons of great tips and advice for portfolios on my website! Check out this guide for a fashion portfolio checklist: successfulfashiondesigner.com/fashion-portfolio/fashion-portfolio-checklist/
Glad you enjoyed! While I appreciate your questions, I don't have the capacity to answer all the ones I get ;( Which is why I created www.FashionIndustryFriends.com (check it out to get help in your fashion career)!
I actually just moved my studio and meant to check! I’m not sure as I’d have to pull it out of the frame, husband got it as a gift for the paper anniversary off eBay 🥰
