The main reason to have a removable or modular van conversion is so the van can be used for other purposes other than just as a camper van; whether that's for work so you can empty the furniture out & put all your work gear in, or whether that's just occasionally because you need to move house, you need to move some big items around.
So what makes a van conversion removable? Is it being able to get it back to the bare metal as when it came out of the factory? Or is it just being able to remove the furniture & free up the space in the van for other purposes.
In my roof beams here, I've put spray foam insulation in, covered it with carpet is permanent. Other methods, such as loft insulation or recycled plastic bottle insulation & foil bubble wrap insulation, provided they're not stuck down with an adhesive, could easily be removed if that was needed in the future.
But certainly it's possible to keep just the furniture removable, so that it can all be taken out if access is needed to certain parts of the van, or if the van is needed for another purpose.
So that leads us onto the question of how would you make a van conversion removable? Let me show you how I did it.
It all began in the design process. I didn’t want to completely commit my vehicle to being a camper full time, & so tried to come up with ways to make it removable, which also goes hand-in-hand with not attaching things directly into the framework of the van - so less permanent, but also less destructive.
To achieve this, I decided to work with what was already in the van, namely the load rings and built-in screw threads. Both of these are present in most vans, but I’ll be referring to NV200 as that’s what I’ve got!
There are 6 load rings in the Nissan NV200 that run along the sides of the van - 2 at the front, 2 in the middle & 2 at the back, & as their name suggests, they are purpose built to attach loads into the van, keeping them secure & keeping the vehicle - & its passengers - safe.
I’ve used 4 of these load rings in my van conversion. One at the front & back for the bed, & on the other side the middle & rear ones to attach the wheel arch storage box
On all four rings I got some turnbuckles, which are super strong & practical items, which hook onto the ring on one end, while the other end hooks onto metal eyes that I’ve screwed & epoxied into the furniture.
You could also use rope or straps in conjunction with the load rings, but don’t use bungees or anything with give in it, as they won’t hold things firmly.
The screw threads can be found all over the place on the NV200, but particularly on the walls & on the rear base of the front seats. Being built into the van, these are ideal to bolt into for solid fixing points
My main use of the screw threads has been the folding table unit, & I’ve used 5 high tensile M6 bolts to hold it to the wall. Like the bed & storage box, it’s very firmly attached.
I’ve also utilised the screw threads on the driver's seat to create a small cupboard, to house smaller items & stop them rolling around in the van whilst driving, & have also put a bolt through the leg of the bed to provide an extra mounting point & a bit of extra peace of mind.
If you intend to convert a van, whether removable or not, always make sure that it’s done safely & securely, so that if the worst were to happen, you’re not putting yourself or others in any danger.
Back with my removal efforts, you can see that in under 10 minutes, most of my van can be removed!

DISCLAIMER: In this video, I am in no way stating that this is the proper way to undertake the conversion of a van, however after research & experience using the van, I believe this to be the way that is best suited to my van & the way I intend to use it.

Just removing the bed frees up the majority of the space you’d ever need. Turnbuckles was a great idea!

I really like that even by just removing the bed you have access to almost all of the floor space, and it makes the van very usable for other things. We live on a farm and often need to haul things, so I am thinking of borrowing from your build re the turnbuckles. So glad I saw this and your insulation removal video before I built! Happy travels! (altho for a tiny heater, I hear that a coupé warmer will heat these small vans and depending on the brand, they do not draw very much power.)

Been looking for this, as I myself is thinking about how to make an easy setup, which is also removable if I need to use the car for something else.

Bit late to the party but nice build, I’m looking at getting maybe a VW Transporter Shuttle; in its standard configuration id have it as a 5 seater with the ability to transform it into an 8 seater by reinstalling the 3rd row of seats, a van with large cargo area by removing both the middle and rear row and also a camper with a modular set up similar to yours. Modularity enables it to become a vehicle capable of pretty much anything.

Thank you! Requiring my van to be versatile has been my juggernaut. Also I have questioned investing so much money and time into a depreciative asset. Did you read any votes you could recommend?

That's understandable, but I really enjoyed the build and get so much use and enjoyment out of the van that it was well worth my time and money, and I'd do it again in a heart beat! I did the build on a budget and over time, so didn't notice the cost so much.

Did you tell us what year model and make of the vehicle? Oh. Nissan NV 200. Are the screw threads unique to this manufacturer? Model? I have Dodge Promaster City and there are holes but none with threading. Have you a recommendation for my situation?

Hi, this is my first and only van so I'm not sure, but I suspect there will be screw threads in other vans. A very practical feature! If there aren't any threads, you could look into rivnuts which add screw threads to holes using threaded rivets. Quite cheap and easy to do yourself :)

small modular campervans are the way forward...all well and good carting a miniature version of your domestic kitchen and bedroom around permenantly, but most of the time you're camping in the van, you'll be cooking/washing up outdoors. Better to spend your money on an easy out canopy/awning a decent night heater and an underslung propane tank, IMO. 'Vanlife' has become an exercise in charlatanism...." I converted this woefully uneconomical behemoth, for $50, 000 so I can monetize my narcissitic proclivity for parking somewhere with a nice view and taking drone footage action shots of myself in expensive outdoor gear" It's a living, I guess ;)
