How to Create a Route in Strava and Sync It To Your Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT (And Also Solve Sync Issues)

In this video I show you how to quickly create a route in Strava and then transfer it across to your Wahoo ELEMNT bike GPS device. I show how to sync Strava routes with my Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT but this also works for transferring routes to the original ELEMNT and the ELEMNT ROAM
If you are having difficulty syncing routes between Strava and your bike computer, i.e. routes won't sync or transfer properly from Strava to your Wahoo ELEMNT, Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT or Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM, then I have a couple of solutions that will hopefully work:
1. In the Wahoo ELEMNT app, de-authorise the Strava app and then re-authorise it; and / or
2. Update the Wahoo ELEMNT firmware, either within the Wahoo ELEMNT app or by selecting the update firmware option on the device itself.

Enjoyed the video, a proper user review and also good timing for me. 48 year old born again cyclist, narrowed it down to the usual two suspects, i am just Keeping fit on the bike but may also do a couple of casual events in the future. Both the bolt and the 530 i can get for the sme price (that of the bolt), which one? I value good function and good customer service just in case 😅 my weekday rides are around 2 hrs each one and then Saturday runs anything up to 5hrs, roads i know but i wpuld like get bit more adventure on the Saturday run, all on road work

Thank you for the explanation. I've tried many occasions to upload strava rides to whaoo Roam its very hit and miss ? I also have a problem with uploading planned routes on Roam to strava whereby the upload metrics to strava is nothing like the workout ( Spourious numbers and data ) My smart trainer is a Elite Direto X .

This also works if you have problems with Strava stared segments not loading on the Element Bolt, just do what he said Routs can also be made in Komoot and synced to the element bolt and you can also save routes that other Komoot users have made and save and load to Wahoo Elemnt Bolt, Komoot is free to use just make an account

Hi, I believe the Wahoo supports Strava live segments? In order for this to work, does it need to paired to a smart phone and do I need to take the phone on rides? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Good question Dave Samsung. The ELEMNT BOLT definitely works with Strava Live Segments. I am 99.9% sure you don't need your phone to be connected to it during the ride. The issue is that I always have my phone in my pocket on rides. I do ride in an area with poor signal and this has never impacted Live Segments. I'll try it on a ride (by switching off Bluetooth) and report back.

Going to drop this here because I'm not sure where else to put it, but the Elemnt needs to be connected to a 2.4 GHz network, otherwise the sync won't work.

I've noticed that the routes created in Strava don't provide turn by turn directions on the wahoo. I think they used to on my old Garmin Edge 820, but it doesn't seem to on the Wahoo. Did you experience the same thing? Any tips on fixing it? Cheers.

Thanks Sriteja. You're right, they don't. In fact you read my mind - I've done half a video on the topic which I need to complete. The way I've found to solve it is to create my routes in RideWithGPS (I have a free account). You can sync this account with the Wahoo. Routes created in RideWithGPS appear on the Wahoo with street names and turn directions. You've got me thinking though about the Garmin point - I'll see what Strava routes look like on my Edge 520 and maybe do a video on that.

There are a number of route creation apps that have a free option. I’ve always liked RideWithGPS. Been a while since I looked, but the free option always used to be sufficient for me

Hi there - a while since I recorded the video, but I don't think so, no. Strava route files don't natively contain TBT directions and the BOLT doesn't add them (the Garmin Edge 530 would, for instance). That's one of the reasons I use RideWithGPS to create routes if I am uploading them to the BOLT.

if you load a rout you made in Komoot and run that app the same time as the bolt that will give you turn by turn I think, voice commands I think

Hi Mark - you can use the Wahoo ELEMNT Fitness app to create a route to a specific destination. Alternatively you can create a route in RideWithGPS or Komoot and have it sync automatically with your Wahoo account. Finally you can use any ride creation software to create a .gpx route file and upload it to the app and it will then sync with your Wahoo device. Unfortunately though, I think all of the Strava route creation stuff is only for paying Strava subscribers.
