How to Create a Unistrut Solar Roof Rack for your Van

In this episode I show you how I built a roof rack out of Unistrut for my Ford Transit for under £100. This can also be used for any van with some modifications. The good thing with the Transit is that there are already some pre drilled holes which you can use M8 bolt to secure down the Unistrut to the roof.
Roof Racks can be expensive costing over £500 where as my Unistrut Roof Rack cost me under £100.
My Unistrut roof rack will be housing my 2 x 200watt solar panels from Renogy.

3 x 21mm Slotted Channel UniStrut - 3 Metre Lengths
Box - M8 Square Washer
Box - M8 Short Spring Channel Nuts - Box of 100
Box - M8 Penny Washer

Hi. That’s for your comments. It’s held up really well. The only thing I would change is the hight of the unistrut. I went for 21x21. If I had used 21x41 I would have needed less risers to get over the curve of the van roof. All in all very happy

Hi, looking to do this myself in a couple of weeks. Couple of questions. Could you have mounted the solar panel brackets the other way round (upside down) so that the panel sits a bit lower, between the two cross pieces, rather than above them? Also, i have those plastic cover things in various places on the top of my van (as it looks like you do also) any idea what's under them? - Ford Transit Custom

Hi. Thanks for watching. I could have mounted the like you mentioned but they then sat very low to the roof. I used unistrut which was 21x21mm. In hindsight I think I should have used 21x41mm which would have made them a little taller. For the plastic covers I too off there was a M6 thread under them so I just needed the bolts to to match which I got from Wicks. Dont get really long ones as like I did to start with as you will then need to cut them down. I am not sure if the Custom will be the same. Good luck.
